“The Founder's Solution”
Act 19
(Curtain Opens)
Scene:
As the clock struck 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 22nd, the Meeting Chamber inside Town Hall bustled with anticipation.
The Founder's Association, a group of influential citizens, had called for a meeting to discuss the future of the town in light of recent events. Samuel Whitmore, the head of The Founder's Association, was leading the meeting to address the sudden passing of Mayor Edmond Harrington and the incarceration of Elijah Thaddeus Worthington, a prominent figure in the community and the owner of The Fairhaven Steamboat Company. The town's folk gathered, their faces marked with concern and curiosity. Whispers and hushed conversations filled the room as they speculated about the future.
Samuel: (firmly and clearly)
Please calm down, everyone. Let us begin.
(Everyone quiets down)
Samuel: (clears throat and speaks firmly)
As you all are aware, our dear town is facing a dire situation. We must find a proper solution to this matter at hand. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Abigail Jenkins (raises hand)
Samuel: ( Clearly speaks)
Yes, Mrs. Jenkins?
Abigail: (speaking clearly)
I say we should hold another election, with new candidates.
(Many people agree and applaud)
Samuel: (firmly)
We could do that, but the problem is, what do we do in the meantime until we find new candidates?
Abigail: (speaking clearly)
Well, I didn't think about that. Could we elect someone temporarily?
(Samuel and the crowd ponder this)
Sebastian: (loudly speaks up)
It may sound rather odd, but I suggest my dear brother Theodore!
(Crowd starts talking and murmuring)
Theodore: (slightly embarrassed)
Thank you, Sebastian, but I couldn't.
(Abigail calmly speaks up)
Abigail: I agree with Sebastian. You've lived here your whole life and you were a strong supporter of our beloved Mayor Edmond Harrington.
Theodore: (slightly embarrassed)
Yes, but I'm not qualified to be a mayor, even temporarily.
Samuel: (firmly)
Well, Theodore, you do seem like the best fit until we can organize a new election.
(Crowd starts murmuring)
Samuel: (firmly)
Well, everyone, what do you think? If anyone objects, say nay; if all agree, say yay!
(Almost everyone says yay to Theodore being Mayor)
Theodore: (slightly embarrassed)
Thank you all for the support. As my first task as temporary mayor, I propose we commission a statue in honor of our beloved mayor and friend, Edmond Harrington!
(Crowd starts cheering)
Theodore: (speaking clearly)
I suggest placing this fine statue of our beloved mayor in front of the gazebo, surrounded by new shrubs in our town square!
(Crowd erupts in cheer)
Samuel: (using a gavel and hitting the sound block)
The meeting is adjourned! Thank you, ladies and gentlemen!
