The shop was crowded that Friday so before closing at 9:30, Tolman invited her to have dinner. At the same pizza place, they took the table on the roof deck since everyone from the sleepy town of East Hollies seems to eat there that night. Chicken BBQ and Bacon Deluxe are their favorites so they took those with some cheap wine that the place offers.
‘Your last ride is at 10 right? How can you go home after this?’
‘Can I borrow your bike?’
‘Nope. It’s not all-around. How about, you stay at my place tonight.’
‘I don’t like scent of your house.’
He scowled as a response.
‘What? You know that ever since!’
‘Ok. I’ll give you money for a motel.’
‘How about, I’ll camp at your balcony.’
‘You know that’s not gonna work right?’
‘I love to look at the stars.’
‘No. It’s either the motel or one of the spare rooms.’
‘Alright, alright- one of the spare rooms it is.’
The food was served seconds after they finished talking.
‘How’s it going Drim, Carl?’ the waiter greeted as he placed their pizza and drink.
‘Life’s been good Sidney.’ Drim replied.
‘Kelly’s having a party tomorrow. Are you going to come?’
‘Me? Well, I bet Tolman’s comin’.’
‘I’m not really sure Hil. We might still be busy this Saturday. After all, thanksgiving is coming.’ Tolman informed.
‘It’s on a Tuesday right?’ They both nodded ‘Ok. But I’ll still be expecting.’ Then Sidney left their table.
‘He’s just friendly Tolman. Don’t sweat on it.’
‘Too friendly if you ask me.’ He said before taking a slice.
There’s a mix of sounds in that old restaurant: people talking, people laughing, people walking while the place creaks and reeks. It’s made of hard wood, as well as the chairs, but lately. They get broken and are hard to fix. The wind blew cold and the moon was covered by thick clouds.
‘It’s going to rain.’ He observed.
‘It’s going to be a heavy one again.’
‘Would it hit the mountain?’
‘The bad omens gave best efforts ever since the gates were opened.’
‘So… you can’t work this Saturday?’
‘Who said I can’t work tomorrow?’
‘You lack sleep or worst, you didn’t sleep at all.’
‘I’m not a kid anymore Tolman. I can handle it.’
‘A little change won’t hurt this town Drim. Trust me.’
‘We don’t know Tolman. But one thing that I’m sure about them is their influence… which causes us to misunderstand God and depart from his will.’
‘Tell me, what do they look like?’ Unlike before, he continued the topic. ‘What does the world like in your eyes?’
‘The most powerful look like snakes, almost- like dragons! Then the weaker ones and common ones have features close to a creepy insect or a disfigured animal.’
‘That’s scary.’
‘I got used to it… and the colours as well.’
‘Is it really just black and white?’
‘No. The omens and spirits have colours. They’re very beautiful.’
‘Even if they can cause calamities and misfortunes?’
‘I just like the way they are, as I like the way I am… Weird.’
‘You’re not weird. You’re just a bit strange.’
‘You’re just being nice.’
The heavens growled and they watched it make sparks as of camera flashes.
‘You know, I just realized you almost live like a comic book hero- ‘almost’ because you don’t have a super suit and other peculiar powers.’
She laughed at his thoughts and stated ‘I’m nothing special Carl. I’m just doing what Adam and Eve failed to do.’
