The first snow fell but Drim doesn’t feel the cold or any need in particular. She’s been on a diet for about a week; a diet that consists of nothing, even water was not included. Tolman was not able to observe it so she went empty for as long she wanted without being bothered. Drim thought it was great, amazing in fact since she doesn’t have to pay for anything until the last bill comes. Changes like this are not new to Drim. Her severe colour blindness began when she was in third grade and her ability to pass through dimensions was just a year pass that.
The snow was knees deep when Tolman noticed something was odd. To reach a point of conclusion, he ordered Drim to dig the snow outside for an easy access of their customers. Two hours passed but she was still there digging without anything to protect her from the blizzard. On those checkered sleeves and blue jeans as of a loyal fan to the lumberjack community, she continued her work and silence. Drim didn’t even sweat or rest for a second. Tolman thought it might not be that cold outside so he removed his jacket and walked out; only to find out it was truly -10 Celsius. He immediately hopped back inside to get warmed. Then with just a little opening by the entrance door, he called out Drim.
‘Hey, hey! Are you alright?’
‘I’m good. What’s wrong? Why did you get out without covers?’
‘Well, I should be asking that.’
‘What? Me?’ She chuckled.
‘What!?’
‘It might be shocking to you but it would not surprise me if I can fly before winter ends.’
He clearly did not like the news. He began sulking and won’t even look at her. Drim just shrugged at his childish traits; it wasn’t her fault she was born different. She thought he would be understanding, he is but after his eyes started sparkling whenever she look at those, she just knew there was something fishy going on in that mind. Drim already told him not to get too close but he keeps coming back so as a consequence, a part of him will be lost if she truly leaves.
The next day, Tolman bought her something to wear. She insisted not to use it but if she won’t, he might be pouting all day so she decided to take it than suffer his attitude. For lunch, he cooked spicy noodles for them to enjoy. She likes the way he makes it which is why she immediately agreed to share. It was mixed with a bit of sea food; it made her more happy to eat since it was her favorite mix. Tolman was glad it all worked out as planned; Drim to look warm and make her remember why it is better to eat. His grin was almost reaching his ears so she nearly died choking from the noodles just because of laughing. He really wants these times to last forever but he knows better, when Drim decides, she will do it.
It wasn’t the norm, he’s been escorting her to the stop lately. Drim thinks it’s the most annoying thing. She could defend herself at any given situation. She needs no one but he still won’t budge – he can’t let go.
‘Ok. I’ll be waiting here. You can go back home now.’
His brows crossed ‘I will wait until you entered the bus.’
‘Seriously Carl?’
‘I don’t know when you will disappear again Drim.’ He sighs ‘I’m just making sure that you’ll be home safe.’
She stares at him. Drim’s clearly mad now. A cold wind passed through the quiet street where they stood.
He shivered ‘T-that was a bad one. You seriously can’t feel it?’
Drim continued to stare.
‘What? What is it!?’
‘I’m still leaving this spring.’
‘I know. You don’t have to keep on reminding me when to kill myself.’
‘Please don’t say that.’
‘Then please don’t leave.’
They kept on looking at each other’s lonely eyes until the bus arrived to take her from the competition.
She sighed ‘I can easily forget about you Tolman. You should stop caring too much.’ She enters the bus ‘You are special to me but, there’s something that has greater value to me...’ then the bus leaves his sight.
‘It’s the will of God… I understand Drim. But I can’t just accept it.’ He whispers to the wind.
