HE is new era, after Thaumaturgists of Wicthwine story's events. Anywhere from 10-50 years after.)
Notterthwine is what the Wicthwine region people call the Demon World, and it is the mockery dimension of the Wicthwine planet. It is also commonly called "Otherworld" or "Mockery". It is often misunderstood as fairy tale and legend, but if someone were alive before the second colonization of humans on the planet (about 2000 Wicthwine years (or around 2300 Earth years) before Thaumaturgists of Wicthwine's events), or even just a millenium before Thaumaturgists of Wicthwine's events, then they would be able to confront the prosperous, sentient, and intelligent dragons of Bagibaha/Tianxia/Ealdoreorthe, the names that the dragons gave the planet of Wicthwine, and hear all about the Otherworld, or as the Dragons called it, Ta’ih Nagil/Yaoxing/Aerworuld. Most dragons were able to even travel to and from the Otherworld and back into the 'real' dimension.
(Note: the Bagibaha naked Dragons went extinct circa EY 100 when the last one died of starvation in the Myrten Desert, the Tianxia Phoenixes went extinct circa BY 500 when the last one was killed in Aichangjiaguo (what is now Dongguo) by a Macaling warlord finding revenge for the death of the fourth-last scaled Ealdoreorthe Dragon (Queen Merriodha of Drassong) before the revival of the Dragons circa HE 10 (third-last was her daughter, Morriggan); the scaled Ealdoreorthe Dragon race never went extinct (second-last and last Ealdoreorthe Dragons were (as of writing this) unnamed male and female Dragons that were awoken to start the revival of the Dragon species circa HE 10).)
To reach the magical dimension of Notterthwine, one has to first reach the last dragon city standing, the capital Baqibaha'Aamira (also known as Baha to humanoid races) of the oldest Dragon Kingdom, Baqibaha, in the vast Wasteland bordering the Wicthwine region, Mrvde Desert, Warmhearts region, and Industrial Coast. Once there, one might note that the dragons are not in the city anymore, replaced by dry, heavy soil around the once-great city. No one is able to reach Notterthwine without the aid of a dragon, as the dragons' ancient texts explain:
"Other land, search for Dragon. Dragon breathes portal's tokens, wings twist portal's innards. Encircle portal, pray to Goddess of Growth." (by Bassam abd Al-Malik the Smiling Dragon)
While the Otherworld is indeed a mockery of Wicthwine, its geography is different and properties of thaumaturgy are different. Thaumaturgy requires using copper as a fuel for casting spells, rather than using stamina as power to a spell. Also, Forbidden Thaumaturgy originated from the Otherworld, and there are no governing laws for thaumaturgy in the Otherworld. Instead, every thaumaturge can know a variety of Forbidden Thauma spells, causing thaumaturgy to be a very important aspect of many Otherworld cultures.
The gods Scaelda, Saefath, and Maroil are fabled to have come from the Otherworld. While this is indeed true, they came in mortal forms, not godlike forms, and they joined the pantheon of gods with Brennet, Molda, Aeta, and Hel once their mortal forms perished and their aural spirits transcended.
(There is also a scientific side to the transcending of the gods. As a sneak-peek to what I’m thinking up: Scaelda, Saefath, and Maroil were humans who uploaded their consciousness to AI programs, while Brennet, Molda, Aeta, and Hel were already AI. Or something like that. Whatevs.)
There is only one non-dragon being that has reached Notterthwine and came back to Wicthwine. There is also one non-dragon being that entered Notterthwine as their spiritual resting place, while their body was buried at the resurrected Drassong capital of Teirfathest.
There isn’t much else to say about the Otherworld, other than to warn that it is a very dangerous place where thaumaturgy runs free, and a testament to the need of a governing body such as the lers Ryri or, in the old times, the Dragons to keep and protect thaumaturgic laws. I hope you’ve enjoyed this part of the Historia series, and I’ll see you in the next article!
