Derek Weebley was never good at Philosophy subjects, but he vividly remembered his high school philosophy teacher once told him happiness comes in three main forms. First, happiness comes on as a feeling of escape. Imagine the feeling of relief when your boss finally called off the day after you worked over-time for five hours. Being able to escape from such a tedious work routine makes you feel extremely happy. Second, happiness comes on as the feeling of superiority over others. In other words, this form of happiness that is based on others’ misfortunes relative to yours. Lastly, happiness is something that is exhausted, something that is retrospective. Memories fall in this category.
Derek used to think there are things that can last forever. Friendships, his music record collections, to name a few. But as he grows up, he realized things tend to change, and usually in a negative way. No matter how hard he tried, they still fall apart easily. Friends come and go, and his record collections scratch and tear. What will be left at the end is memories, and it is the only thing that can be preserved.
There is always a myth about death. It claims that right before one dies, his or her mind will generate a series of flashbacks that recalls some of their memories of life. It could be the sunrise you saw with your beloved ones, the goal you scored during the football match in your final school year, and the crazy hiking adventure you went with your ex-best friend. The flashbacks last about 2 minutes, then they began to fade until there is nothing left. Therefore, Derek started a memory journal to record his happy memories, so that when it’s time for him to see those flashbacks, it will all be his most pleasant and memorable ones.
A/N: A short one, but I think is sufficient to convey some of my ideas and attitude towards the topic:) Hope you guys will get something out of it!
