Capítulo 8: On the way home
The veritechs carefully placed the pod zentraedi in the hangar and Knight and the others came out very relieved.
“I can't believe it, you're alive!” one of the mechanics told them, who together with other mechanics and pilots surrounded them impressed and bombarded them with many questions.
“Rick, Knight, I can't believe it, it's true, you're alive!” Roy shouted white from the shock and went to embrace Rick, just as a father would with his lost and found son.
“Roy....you won't let me breathe....cut it out, brother...” Rick complained, but with a smile on his lips.
“I don't understand, how did you escape?” Roy asked
“That's a long story, Roy, I'd better tell you tomorrow," Rick said.
“I don't think we can afford that, Rick," said Lisa, "I'm sure the captain would like to see us right away.”
Lisa was not wrong as the pilots were informed that the captain wanted them to go to him. Lisa and the others went to Global's and gave him a brief report about his confinement and subsequent escape, as well as questions from the zentraedi interrogation.
“Very intriguing was the reaction of the enemy," he told them and proceeded to light his pipe.
"In particular, the matter of the protoculture they were talking about” Global said “is very mysterious.... And the number of enemy ships...”
Global thanked them for the report and congratulated them for their happy return, but indicated that they should all report to a meeting tomorrow to give a more detailed report to the other commanders of the ship.
Knight collapsed on his bed as soon as he was in front of it, cursing that he had to go to the meeting very early in the morning.

The next day, Knight and the others went to a military hall and gave a detailed report of the events they faced from the capture of Lisa's ship to the successful escape from the Zentraedi ship. The ship's commanders did not believe the pilots' report on the number of enemy ships, nor did they believe the information they were given about protoculture.
“Damn dinosaurs," complained Knight after the meeting was over. He and everyone else was heading to the city to enjoy a day of rest that was given to them by Global.
“Aren't you coming with us, Lisa?” Knight, who was already on a first-name basis with the woman after her affair on the Zentraedi ship, asked her.
“No, I want to catch up on everything that happened in our absence.”
“Please Lisa, you didn't want to be with us, and neither you nor Rick told us how your part of the adventure went when you separated from us," said Knight and both Lisa and Rick blushed a little.
“I think you two are getting along much better than before," Ben said happily.
“No, I'm sorry, but I'd like to go to the bridge and meet Claudia and the girls," declined Lisa's invitation, "Besides, wouldn't you like to come, Knight? I'm sure you're looking forward to meeting Sammie.”
“With Sammie, why?” asked Max.
“You didn't know, she and Knight are dating," Lisa told them.
“WHAT!!” shouted the pilots with the exception of Rick.
“It's true," said Ricky, "Knight told us while we were being interrogated by the Zentraedi.”
“This is unfair!” Ben shouted and grabbed Knight by the neck with his huge arms, the other pilots joined him too.
“I remind you that I am your officer superior," Knight said poisonously, and they all let him go, exchanging nervous looks.
“And I remind you that I'm yours," Lisa said, "I'd like to know more about your relationship with Sammie, after all she's still very young and innocent.”
Knight swallowed saliva and said goodbye to his friends following Lisa, who was on her way to the bridge. Halfway through, he explained the whole situation to her.
“So she's not your girlfriend!” Lisa reproached her, although she was relieved by the safety of her subordinate, who in her opinion was still too "green" to enter into a romantic relationship with a man.
“I'm sorry I lied to you, Lisa... Commander, but I thought you and Rick would have a better effect on the enemy.”
“Don't even remind me, Jr.” Lisa said and looked the other way so he wouldn't notice how flushed she was when she remembered her kiss with Rick.
“Please don't be angry.... And call me Knight, I hate it when people call me Jr. or Junior...”
“All right, Knight, but you still can't get out of coming to the bridge with me.”
“What! Go to the bridge.”
“Yeah, it'll be fun to watch you fix this mess.”

Lisa entered the bridge, while Knight was crouched in the doorway. Apparently Sammie took the place of Lisa and Diana, the controller of one of the ship's pinpoint shields, was filling Sammie's position.
Knight thought that after such a tender scene he might escape from entering the bridge, but he saw with horror how Lisa was whispering something to Claudia and she was gazing at the door of the bridge.
“Well, Lieutenant Knight, please come in, honour us with your magnificent presence," Claudia ordered sarcastically.
“...with your permission Major Grant” Knight saluted as he was shaking on the bridge.
“You don't look so sure anymore, eh, conqueror," laughed Kim, while Vanessa laughed with disguise. Diana looked at the scene without understanding what was going on.
“What, is it time for the walk?” Sammie asked, remembering how her date was interrupted by the enemy attack. While Kim whispered about the meeting in the park to Diana, who was very surprised and looked at Knight with eyes open like plates.
“Yes Lieutenant, tell us if it's time for the famous walk with our Sammie, and where do you plan to take her?” Claudia said to him in a dangerous tone as she placed her arm around his neck in a not very maternal way, but not rough enough to attract Sammie's attention.
Kim and Vanessa had tears around their eyes for trying not to laugh, while Lisa smiled strictly at Knight, while Diana only shook her head while she looked at the pilot with furrow.
"Oh, luck, may it be whatever you decide," thought Knight and tried to get out of the situation.
“You see, commander, I was thinking of inviting Sammie over for ice cream because I don't think I could afford to pay her anything else, like giving her flowers for example, which I planned to do from the beginning before I realized my sad monetary situation," Knight said confidently and making the most innocent face he could.
“You are so..." said Claudia, who was looking down at Knight from above, as the woman was very tall and pressed her arm a little closer against the pilot's neck.
“Girls, would you please step outside for a moment," Lisa asked, and the girls came off the bridge carrying a confused Sammie who didn't know what was going on.
Knight, who was the same height as Rick and Lisa looked like a child in front of Claudia and couldn't help but take two steps back when Claudia released him and faced him with a reproving look on his face, just like Lisa.
“You're not fooling me, Knight," Claudia said. “If you think you're good at Casanova, you should take more classes with Fokker. Now, you better leave our baby sister alone if you know what's good for you.”
“I can't believe it, Lieutenant, Sammie is too young for what you plan to do with her," said Lisa very seriously and Knight swallowed his spit (since she had hit it right on the nail).
“You have a lolita complex boy, but that can be solved, I'll arrange an appointment with Dr. Leingbert, who is the ship's psychologist," said Claudia, bringing her face closer to the pilot's face.
“Girls, you can come in now," Lisa called out, raising her voice to be heard.
The women came in and surrounded Knight the same way a pack of lionesses surrounded a wildebeest cub to kill him.
“Well, then, when do we leave?” asked Sammie, a little confused by her friends' behavior.
Knight looked at the women nervously and, remembering his parents' faces, approached Sammie and hugged her and gave her a kiss with tongue.
"Son of a bitch...!" Claudia thought, as her face was breaking down in rage, Lisa looked at the scene beside her without giving credit to her eyes.
"I can't believe it, after what we told him," Lisa thought indignantly.
"Oh, my God, this one gets killed," thought Vanessa, alarmed.
"How bold, Knight, I'll give you that," thought Kim, who looked at the scene in amazement but with a smile on her face.
"This Lieutenant is very brave or suicidal," Diana thought as she watched the man's features more closely.
Sammie, for her part, well, she didn't really think anything since it wasn't just her first kiss, in fact she hadn't even chastely kissed anyone in her life, and now a man was kissing her "French style" kiss. The poor girl fainted for a second after separating from Knight but came to her senses thanks to the help of Knight who held her in his arms.
“Excuse me Sammie, I lost my credit card on the zentraedi ship, but I hope this kiss of mine will make up for the ice cream and flowers, my love," he said to Sammie, as he skillfully stood behind her and held her shoulders and smiled tenderly.
"Damn... He's shielding himself in Sammie," thought Claudia who was clenching her fists in fury.
“This guy is good," Kim whispered to Diana, who nodded her head.
Vanessa looked at Lisa nervously and finally her commander spoke up.
“I'm glad that what you feel for Sammie is true, but limits your displays of affection in front of other people," said Lisa.
"Oh no, I forgot that Lisa is also naive about this kind of thing," Claudia thought annoyingly.
“Thank you, Commander Hayes," said Knight, standing up, and without giving Claudia time to fight back, he took Sammie's hand.
“Excuse me, Major Grant, now that Sammie's shift is over, we can go to the church in town, I heard they finally put the new stained-glass windows up, they'll look great," said Knight, putting on a face of innocence.
“Of course Knight.... you can go... to church," Claudia said very tightly, "but I'm afraid the other girls still have a shift to complete, so say hello to the father when you see him, tell him I'll come to see him later, you know for confession. After all, we're in the military, we don't know when we'll need... extreme anointing.”
Knight put on an excellent poker face in the face of Claudia's threats and then with a smile, he stalled in front of his superiors and left with Sammie.
“I'll talk to Roy later," Claudia told Lisa. “I wonder what the hell he's teaching him besides flying a veritech.”

Roy was laughing hard the next day after Claudia told him about Knight's audacity.
“Yes, Knight told me, it's too bad that he and Sammie had to spend the whole evening in church because of you.”
“ROY, WHAT THE HELL!” Claudia shouted, “This is all your fault, I'm sure you're showing him your tricks, and as for the church, I'm sure if you go there you'll get on fire.”
“That's for sure, babe, but I'd like to get into the church anyway, you know, I never did it in one... at least not with you.”
“Oh, you're impossible, I wonder why the hell I'm still with you.”
“I remind you of that right away," Roy said lewdly and hugged Claudia and laid her down on the floor of her room.

The next day, Roy informs his pilots that the ship would try to break through the zentraedi barrier in order to make its way to Earth.
“It'll be a great bet, guys, but if we make it, we can go home.”
“Will we expect opposition from enemy pods?” Knight asked.
“No, this will be a barrier-breaking operation, our enemy are the big ships, but I want you all on your veritechs anyway and ready for any eventuality.”
Knight was in his veritech ready to take off at Roy's command, the whole ship was shaking with enemy fire and the pilot was already getting nervous.
“Hell, I hope it ends soon, How much I would like to go out and fight.... Everything is better than being still in this place and enduring uncertainty.”
The ship stopped shaking and the entire hangar staff breathed a great sigh of relief.
“Rick, I think the worst is over," Knight told him on the ship's tele-communicator, when a strong shock was felt there, followed by a bridge announcement that the modular transformation of the ship would take place.
“What's wrong! Why the hell are they running a transformation so soon?” Knight complained.
“I'm sure the ship is too damaged to penetrate the atmosphere unless it transforms.... HANG ON!” ordered Roy.
Knight tightened his muscles as he felt his stomach seem to leave his body.
“Fuck, we're going down in a freefall, I doubt we'll make it out of this.” Knight was resigned, when the whole structure of the ship felt the impact of landing in the ocean. The veritechs were secured to the ship, but everything not nailed to the ground blew up and went everywhere.
The chaos was total in the hangar, and some of the mechanics were dead, Knight and the others went out and helped the wounded, then were called in to rescue and help the civilians who were injured in the landing.
After a whole afternoon, the captain allowed the civilians to go out on the deck of the ship.
Ben was so happy that he did some amazing pirouettes for someone of his size.
“I can't blame him," said Ricky, "just look at that sky.”
At that time several fighter planes from Earth were flying over the SDF-1 welcoming it.
