Chapter - 7
The shrilling sound over the mic calms me down and my headache becomes a little bit better. Mrs. Grumpy aka Mrs. Green talked so loudly the entire time that my head started to ache. Yvonne and I sat on the first row, third seat; yeah, you are right. Right beside us sits Jason and Elijah. We didn't sit there on purpose; when we came even though Mrs. Green didn't enter the class yet, the class was full. The only pair of seats available was the one we were sitting now. Talk about coincidence.
The one hour of history class made me so lethargic and sleepy. Trying to concentrate on what she is saying invited a big headache which seems to get worse and worse. Yvonne dozed off after five mins of "concentrating" but Mrs. Green came up and woke her up. I tried to wake her up but she didn't wake up at all. Now she is all irked and grumpy because she is sleepy.
Jason and Elijah were scribbling down on some paper, laughing and giggling since the start ing of the class. I weren't stalking them quietly, for real. Mrs Green also caught them so I saw what were they doing and for the sounds, we were neighbours so I could hear them. The entire class were disinterested except for a guy whose name is Danny Vanderwaal, I guess. Yvonne told me he is the "nerd" of the college and studies a lot. The good thing is that bullying the unpopular and the nerds are considered impertinent and inhuman so it isn't in practice. Wow. My school, Easton High, were full of groupies and immature boys who think they are cool. My brother is also one of them but he at least is mature enough to understand the rights and the wrongs. Last year, one of the 'cool' guys even tried to kiss me when he came over for his lacrosse practice. Yes, he was my brother's teammate. My brother saw it and the next day, they had a huge fight though the guy whose name is...Harold Stevenson..I guess., apologised and was forgiven. I'm so glad I'm done with high school.
After the bell, Elijah and Jason are the first one to leave the class. They just ran from the class and even though Mrs Green calls out to them, I guess they didn't hear. Who cares. I turn to Yvonne who is now smiling like a baby who just got what she wants. I signal her 'Let's move' and she nods. When we are finally out of the class, I take a deep breath, relieve that the class is over.
"Hey, I'm so glad that it's over!"
"No. I had fun." I say sarcastically.
She punches me softly in my shoulder and I laugh.
"Yeah it was hella boring. I guess I was psycho back then because I chose History as one of my majors."
"Who told you to use 'was'? You still are!"
I give her a deadly glare and stop walking while she continues to. She turns back and gives me a look that says 'What happened now?'.
"You are going to apologize to me right now!" I say, inserting a pouty face.
She comes back thumping the ground with her feet, groaning. I'm definitely loving this.
She starts to drag me after saying sorry. As it's said and done, I start to walk beside her again. After a minute,
"Oh yes! By the way, why were Jason and Elijah in our history class? We are freshmen and they are sophomores. How is it even possible?" I ask.
"Uh...I guess they flunked so Dean forced them to be with us so they feel embarrassed and not flunk again? I guess."
"Oh."
We start to walk towards the psychology department for my phone when Jason comes up in front of us, trying to say something to Yvonne.
"Yes?" Yvonne says, trying not to sound nervous.
"Yvonne..umm..can you and.."
He starts to scratch his back of his head in nervousness which makes Yvonne blush a bit but tries to hide it. She is a bad actress. Elijah was standing against the wall, facing us with his muscular arms crossed. Yeah, I just noticed him right now. I give him a look that says "What's going on?"and he mouths back saying that even he doesn't know.
Finally, after a minute of gaining all his courage, he says, "Yvonne, can you and Summer come to sit with us during lunch time?"
Her mouth drops but she controls herself.
"O-Of course. Will you mind?" She turns to me to ask.
I shake my head teasingly at her and she hits me quietly.
"Okay then. Bye." He says and goes away nervously.
After he is completely out of side, I say,
"WOAH HUMAN! YOU WERE SO BLUSHING!"
"I was not."
"You were darling."
We were fighting on that when the mic goes off with another bell. Oh shit. The second class was about start and we still didn't go to the psychology department to get phone. We run downstairs and see Mr.Brooks coming out of the department.
"Girls, you finally came! I was waiting for you guys."
"We are so sorry Mr. Brooks. We actually got caught up somewhere."
"It's okay. But you guys better hurry." Mr.Brooks says and leaves for his class.
We run inside the department and grab my phone, though leaving the usb charging station in a good state (obviously) and run upstairs as fast as we can. We weren't together for this period since she had Fine arts and I had Journalism.
I enter my class and see that the class is half empty. So I slid down on the first row, first seat. I look around the class to approximately count on how many students were there. Just when I am about to start counting, a girl slid down to the seat next to mine.
"Hi! Can I sit here?" She asks after sitting down, not that I mind.
"Yeah sure."
"Thank you...By the way, I'm Olivia Jill McAdams."
She lends her hand out for a handshake.
I shake her hand, replying, "Hi, I'm Summer Hayes."
"Do you have a middle name?" She ask.
"Yeah, I do but I don't really like it so I don't usually use it." I small laugh.
"Oh. What is it but?"
"It's Avery. Summer Avery Hayes."
"Wow! It's so beautiful! Why don't you like it?"
"I don't know. I just don't."
"It's okay. Happens sometimes."
We talked for a while and she told me our teacher will be Mr. Davis. She says that he is sweet but very strict.
"Wait. How do you know about it? Arn't you a freshman?"
"I'm a sophomore."
I give her a confused look.
"Yeah, I know what you are wondering. Here in our college, journalism courses for sophomores and freshmen are the same. Only seniors have a different one."
"Oh." I say and nod.
After around five minutes of more getting to know each other, our professor enters.
The class turns out to be very interesting and Mr. Davis turns out to be a very good teacher. He explains the five main cores of journalism: Truth and Accuracy, independence, fairness and impartiality, accountability and humanity. I knew about it from before because I used to read up about it but today, my basics got cleared.
When the bell over the mic went off, I felt disappointed because the class was so fun. We thank our professor and leave our classroom for our next class, Psychology. I wave Olivia goodbye and move towards the classroom on the right down the hallway. I meet her halfway and she seems happy.
"Hey, how was it?"
"Fine arts was fun. Fine arts is always fun actually. How was yours?"
"Same as yours. I felt disappointed when the bell went off."
"Even me. Anyways, let's move to Psychology class."
"Yeah." I nod.
"Hey, do you know Olivia?"
"Olivia who?"
"Olivia..uh..Olivia McAdams?"
"Oh yeah. I talked to her once or twice last year after her big story with Elijah."
"What? What was it?"
"It happened last year in Preston's Halloween party. The squad was invited. Why am I even saying this? Obviously they were invited. So were Olivia and her two sidekicks, Fiona Jones and Daphne Williams. I'm not saying they are mean and rude like high school wanna be groupies and sluts. They all are nice and sweet but a little too much into the squad, especially Olivia. She is after Elijah since last year and finally last year Halloween night, she got what she wanted. But as there is saying: People are never satisfied, even after getting what they ask for; she wanted more than sex after that night.
"A relationship?"
"Duh. But Elijah is a typical bad boy who only cares about sex so he straightforwardly said no to her idea. She still didn't give up and told everyone that she is pregnant. Elijah was shocked but you know, he isn't a bad guy so he stayed with her and was willing to be a part of his child's life. One day, Olivia had her pregnancy checkup and she asked him to go with her but Elijah had some other stuffs to do so he told me and Jason to go instead. We agreed and we thought Olivia knew we were coming instead of Elijah but turns out she didn't. When we reached the hospital and we were just about to enter her check up room when we overheard the conversation between the doctor and Olivia. Turns out she and the Doctor made a deal and she was faking her pregnancy for the last four months!"
"Woah. She is real psycho?"
"Yeah! Upon hearing the news, Elijah was so furious that it looked like he will kill her the next minute. He bursted out and was going to slap her too but he control himself. No one blamed him for almost slapping her because she deserved it. Her parents were so furious and embarrassed and they didn't let her go to college for around three weeks. Elijah forgave her with time but he doesn't talk to her anymore."
I don't know why but I felt an army of relief gushing through me when she said he doesn't talk to her anymore. Ugh. Before I even knew what was I doing, I found myself asking her,
"Is she still obsessed with him?"
"Yeah, duh."
Before she could speak any further, we already reached our Psychology class. We settled down on first seat we saw (couldn't care less about where we sit) and Mr. Brooks enters the class the next moment. We wish him the time of the day and he smiles and just like that, our class starts like just like typical classes does. The class was fun and interesting and I'm not surprised about it because Psychology is an interesting subject for real but I couldn't stop thinking about the thing that happened between Elijah and Olivia. Moreover, she was my bench mate for Journalism class; not that I'm ashamed of her now. I'll still treat her the same. And as for Elijah, I felt bad for him and started to think that what happened must've stabbed him real bad. He didn't deserve it. Sympathising and empathising about the situation on my head, I didn't realize when I started to feel nervous about the combine lunch together after this class. That's when I knew, I was so looking forward to it. Great. Fantastic Summer. I thought to myself, wondering how I let myself be like this.
