Yesterday was gone and today was the new day. My apartment isn't much yet, but I have somethings so it's not like I'm poor. I'm actually well off for myself. I have the essentials, a nice television, a kick ass Xbox one, and a nice view of the water.
I was doing my daily routine. Take a shower, make breakfast, pack a lunch, watch a little television, then off to work I go. I was interrupted today during my television time by a door bell ring. So I got up and answered it. First I looked through the peep hole, but whoever it was covered it with their hand.
"Ok asshole." I undid the lock and opened the door. There to greet me at the door was Lucy and her fist. "SMACK" She had hit me right in the kisser.
"Son of a bitch. You have one hell of a hook." As I readjusted my jaw. "Wow!"
"Let's go we need to be there early for sign in."
"Sign in? Never had to sign in before." I walked back into my apartment and shut off the television, then walked into my room.
"It's a little more serious this time. They want a record on who goes in and out of the project at this stage." Lucy stood at the door way not even stepping a single foot in.
"That seems a bit uptight for the company."
"Would you hurry up!"
"Hey it takes time to look as good as I do. Plus you could've came in and sat down." I walked out of my room in a white shirt with black pants, a tie and vest, and bowling shoes.
Lucy leaned against the door, "Bowling shoes?"
"Yeah they're comfy and they slide."
"Get your ass back in there and change." She pointed to my room.
"Wow I didn't know I brought my mother along." I turned around and she hit me right in the back of the head.
"Smart ass." I went to my room and slipped on my work shoes. I looked at them and they just didn't feel right. Then I noticed I had put them on the wrong feet, and so I switched them around and out to the living room I went.
"So I guess that's a no on my invitation?" I wanted to make it up to her for yesterday.
"What invitation?"
"I was hoping we could go bowling."
"We'll see how much of a fool you make of yourself today first. Oh and you'll need this to get past security." She handed me a name card with my face on it and position.
"Floor manager, damn."
"Don't get to cocky now you're just a manager not my boss or anything. Now let's go the cab is waiting." Lucy walked out the door and I followed slamming the door as I passed.
We got out to the cab and Lucy stood there waiting at its door. "Well are you going to open it for me?" And so I opened the door of the cab for her. Somehow she managed to nail her head right on the corner of the door. "Ahh son of a." Her hand hit her head as fast as she had hit the door. She scooted all the way across the seat then I got in next.
"Let me see." She moved her hand out of the way.
"Damn that looks ugly." Her hand soaked with blood hit me right across the face. "I was talking about the cut." I reached into my pocket and grabbed my handkerchief. I started to move it towards her forehead.
"Eww don't touch me with that."
"What it’s not used."
"I don't care just the thought of it is gross."
"Do you want to ruin your clothes?"
"No." She grabbed the handkerchief from my hand and pressed it to her forehead. "To Kyoto and third please."
The cab moved out into traffic and with the flow we went. There was no need for me to have a car in this town with all the cabs here. Everything is in walking distance anyways so there really isn't a need.
We did as she said and went through check in. Today they had lots of security, almost as if something bigger was going on. Not only did they have metal detectors but they also had retina scans, watch dogs, and an increase in cameras and police.
"Lucy are you sure it's just a test today?" We paced ourselves down the hallway. The steps around the corner would take us to production floor.
"You know that's what I thought, but it seems someone a little more important is here." Out on the production floor we met up with Mr. Timor.
"Okay kiddos today is a special day as you can see. We have the secretary of defense with us today. He will be watching as you two test the VR helmets."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa I did not sign up for this."
"Actually yes you did Bradford it’s in your contract."
"Lucy when were you going to tell me this?"
"I swear I didn't know."
"Alright kiddos right this way." Timor showed us the way to testing room 3. There were several different guards posted around the floor. Each one monitoring a possible entrance/exit. The door to testing room 3 was locked up tight with 3 security locks. A card scanner, retina scanner, and an old style tumbler key lock all positioned on the right hand side of the door. Each of us had to enter the room separately from the other to ensure none of us were defectors. After 30 minutes the whole crew was in test room 3.
Test room 3 on the outside looked normal, but only a select few people are let inside to see its wonders. In the center of the room was a giant glass cylinder with two patient tables. Branching out from the glass cylinder were cords hooked up to many computers, and from the computers came all the data recorded on the VR project. The walls followed the same cylinder shape as the glass cylinder and from them hung a balcony from which the secretary of defense was standing.
"Ok follow me to the central chamber. Here we will monitor your vitals as we put you through testing with the VR project." Timor walked to the door of the chamber and unlocked it with his key card, but it was odd he didn't slide it through a scanner he slid it through the crack in the glass like he jimmied the lock. "Now if you would please take off your clothes and put on these medical clothes."
"Timor are you fucking nuts. There is no privacy and she is just a girl." I pointed over at Lucy.
"Excuse me I am 19!" Lucy started to strip her shirt off when Timor butted in.
"Whoa there it was just a joke. Use it on all the people we've brought in here. You're also the first to actually question it Bradford. Good job."
"Yeah thanks. Asshole." I turned around and sat down on the table. For being a metal table it was quite warm. Almost like it was slightly heated or something.
"But I will have you take off your shirts for the monitoring equipment. So if you feel more we can face the tables away from each other?" I looked at Timor like he was insane.
"What if I don't want to? What if I walk out right now?" Timor took a step closer to me.
"Then we have to dispose of you." Timor smiled as if he found pleasure in his comment.
I sat down on my table and took off my shirt, Lucy did the same. People were buzzing around everywhere outside the chamber, getting their computers ready. The doctors were waiting at the door for Timor to let them in.
"Bradford, Lucy I'll leave you two to the professionals. Oh what am I saying I am a professional." He laughed as he went out through the door.
The doctors filed in one by one until eight of them were in the room. They spoke to each other but I couldn't understand them, I think they were speaking Japanese. They had placed trays around us with monitoring points.
"Hello Bradford I am Doctor Atlas. If you want just call me John."
"I prefer to keep it business."
"Ok then let's get you hooked up." The doctors started putting monitors on me. They put one on each side of my head, one on my heart, one on each arm, and a strap around my wrist.
"Lucy you ok?" I tried to turn my head but I couldn't quite reach.
"Yeah I'm fine."
"Ok Bradford here is your helmet. When you are ready put it on and press the button on the side. The program will then be loaded." I took the helmet from Atlas and set it in my lap. I would have never thought a month ago I would be testing the VR project in front of the secretary of defense.
"Bradford... Good luck." I could hear the softness in her voice as if she actually cared for once.
"Thanks, you too."
