He took a deep breath, leg extending slightly as he made the next step forward. One mistake and it would all be over. One slippery rock, or sudden rush of water - not that the water wasn't already rushing past him at neck-breaking speeds - and he'd most likely be dead.
Another step. Nearly there. He could see what he came out here for.
And then something hard and wet slapped his leg, the one that wasn't lifted slightly in the air, knocking him off balance.
It was all it took before he was swept away, leaving the lost item far behind.
