I watch the last ship fly up, disappearing into the sky.
I'm probably the only one left on this planet. And the only one who wants to be left behind.
Slowly opening the door, I step out into the street, the empty, quiet street, and walk right down to the town square.
I know that the alarm is for the power generator, which supposedly is leaking. But I know it's not. Every time a planet sets its generator alarm off, everyone leaves, and it becomes a ghost planet. No one goes back to check if it's safe to go back, no one wants to. They're refugees, and they get special treatment, no one wants to go back, so they don't.
I'm alone here. Just me, myself, and I. And all the animals of course.
But then I hear it, right in the nearest street, a sobbing sound. A human sobbing sound. I carefully walk closer, and soon a person comes into view.
"Hello?" I ask.
The sobbing face looks up, it's a guy I recognize from school, Tristan. His parents are rich, and he's about as shallow as you can get. The type I avoid. Now the question is to stay and help, or run, but he answers for me.
"I was left behind," and I've never seen anyone this vulnerable.
"I can see that," I respond, with just the tinge of annoyance I have at him for ruining my solitary planet.
"My parents are gone, everyone is gone," Tristan continues.
"Not everyone, I'm still here," I say smiling and kneeling down.
"You don't count Tarya," he knows my name! I, who avoided him amd his likeness, am someone he remembers, "all you do is plot ways to kill people, I'm just as good as dead."
"No you're not. Not just yet," I reply, "for now, we stick together, and try to survive."
