I'm stuck on earth with Tristan Hoff, the preppy, pretty boy from school, and Obsidia Marsden, the spunky orphan, who isn't outgoing enough to make any friends.
"Come on," I tell the others, getting up, "we've got to leave the city."
"Why?" Tristan asks, and just then, as to express my point, a building just a few meters away snaps, and crumbles. Obsidia dives it if the way, and where she had been sitting was a large hunk of metal.
"That's why," I say, "we need to leave before we die."
"We'll die anyways," Obsidia says, "the generator is leaking."
"A, its not," I say bluntly, "and B, if it was, leaving the city would be the best, we'd get away from all the toxic material."
"The alarm when off because of a leak, of course it's leaking!"
"Well it was a false alarm. If you want to go check, be my guess. Walk to the generator. It's far, and when you get there you probably will die. There are always leaks there, and so when they find one over the maximum allowance per year, the alarm goes off. But all the toxic material is inside the plant."
"Why are you always right?"
I roll my eyes. Obsidia and Tristan get up, and we start walking towards the city limit, when we hear a sound, kind of like a large skimmer, but not as smooth.
We peer around a building and see one of the old vehicles, a car, being driven by speeder girl.
I should tell you about skimmer girl and her friend. I don't know her name, but she and her friend are from the Northwest side of town, where the newer immigrants live, so the two of them have strange accents. And strange eyes, no one has green eyes, but they do. And everyone calls her speeder girl because she's the only one with a skimmer license in her grade, or the one above, but with her accent and speech patterns, she calls a skimmer a speeder.
She slows when she sees us, and hops out.
"Hey!" she calls, "Is everyone okay?"
I pause a moment and try to figure out what she said.
"Yes!" I call in response, and motion for the other to come out, and we walk over to her large car.
"You're Tarya, right?" her friends asks, and I nod, "I'm Damian."
"Yeah, and this is Tristan and Obsidia," I reply gesturing to the others.
"And I'm Via," so speeder girl has a name.
"Short for Olivia?" I ask.
"Yeah, but if you call me Olivia, you probably will die a most painful death," she threatens.
"Okay."
"Where are you headed?" Obsidia pipes in.
"Away," Damian says, "Away from the crumbling city, with you three."
"We didn't ask for help!" I exclaim.
"It's not help, it's necessity. We just need to leave, and we have a car."
"Would you guys stop arguing," Tristan says, "Its a good idea."
"Okay, but we need to get to a activity post," Via says, "and get supplies."
"Great!" Obsidia says, and we get into their car.
After driving for a few minutes, we stop at the activity posts, and Via gets out, and pops open a box on the side of the building and punches a code into a keypad. She then gestures for us to go inside.
"Grab a waterproof pack, and put in any food and materials in it," Damian tells us, both of them are really annoying, and they think that they know more about surviving in the wilderness, just because the two of them are one year older than Tristan and me, and two years over Obsidia. Everyone knows that I'm the most outgoing person at school.
"And one of you should get a bag and put a tent or two and some sleeping bags in it, and grab an air filter, you might need one," Via says, and as she turns around to go grab more supplies her large head of blonde curly hair whips a can onto the floor and she picks it up, "Pepper spray, oh, and grab some weapons, we need to be able to eat out there."
"Why do we need an air filter?" I ask.
"Because of the leak," she replies.
"There isn't a leak, I mean there is, but the leak is only in the plant," I say, happy to see her shocked face at me knowing something more than her, "There is a leak allowance every year at the plant, one over, and the alarm sounds. If you go into the plant, you risk exposure, but other than that, we're safe."
"So we're here, all alone, and we're not going to die within a year?" Damian asks.
"Yes, so bring your air filters, but a water filter might be more useful," I say, grabbing a few from the shelf.
