Despite the urge to veer from the trail, I don't, knowing that this time of year, when the Supersun is hottest, and Sun X, the only other sun visible from our planet, follows the Supersun, negating it's heat with it's own kind of coolness, it's this time of year when restricted hours are enforced more. They need to know where we are at all times, because it's this time of year when a leak is most likely.
Then I hear it.
Beep. Beep. Beep. This is not a drill.596Please respect copyright.PENANAhCRjgZAdmV
I never expected the sound to be like this. This isn't as annoying, not as nagging as it should be, but then again, I'm a mile from the nearest speaker. I turn around, and start making my way back to the main city.
The dense forest above me keeps me calm enough to keep walking. To place one foot in front of the next. Left. Right. Left. Right. The constant rhythm draws me closer, closer to the thought of surviving. If I don't make it to the plumes of dust, ash, and smoke emerging from the skyline, I'm dead. If I don't make it, the leak will slowly make its way towards me.
If it's gas, then I die soon. If it's liquid, I've got as long until I drink the contaminated water. I don't want to think about all the other variables that will probably have me killed within a day.
The dark thoughts keep me moving, until I find myself running. Running until I can't go any further. I just keep running. I feel the soft ground under my feet, I cant tell I'm not moving fast, but it's as fast as I can.
I look up to check my surroundings, and I realize, I can't see the cityscape anymore. I can only see trees.
I'd been running away from safety. And I wanted to leave the city so bad.
