Olivia
A few hours later I had written the contract and sent it over to Daniel for proofreading. I am going home early today, just waiting for the feedback on the contract, then I'm out of here. I am still sitting in the conference room reading through all the documents from Banner Oil, and I can barely keep my eyes open. I lean back in the chair before stretching my arms up. I need a break, so instead of reading I grab my phone, find my mom's number, and call her. As the ringing continues, I am almost crossing my fingers that she won't pick up. At least then I have tried. But no such luck...
"Olivia!" My mom's overly happy voice comes through the phone. Bettany Carter is a stay-at-home suburban housewife. She bakes almost every day, cleans the house regularly, has dinner on the table at six ever night and makes a grand meal every Sunday. This is how all her friends see her, me on the other hand, I see an overly anxious mom that just don't get me as a person. My mom is happy that I got a good job that I love, but she would much rather I find a less demanding job so I can get married and have kids.
"Hi mom" I say, feeling the guilt rush through, I had spoken to her one time since I moved to New York over a month ago. But this job was so hectic and time just flew by.
"How are you? How's work?" I know she added the last part for my benefit, she didn't really care about my job.
"I'm good, I have made a few friends." Before I can even go over to tell her about work, she jumps back in.
"Friends? that's amazing sweetie, tell me about them." I know exactly what she is fishing for.
"Helena, she works at the front desk, she is amazing, always positive and straight forward." I pause for a second debating whether I should continue or not.
"And Sam..."
"Sam? Is Sam a guy?" my mom gasps in glee, and I can't help but roll my eyes.
"he's a guy..."
"is he just a friend?" she almost giggles through the phone
"Yes mom, he is just a friend." I can almost see the disappointed look on her face through the phone.
"So, there is no guy in your life then?" I can hear the disappointment in her voice. Even though my mom is annoying at times, and we don't see eye to eye on a lot, I still love her and hate disappointing her. A white lie can't hurt.
"There might be a guy" I whisper, but my mom can still hear it and she scream out in joy. I even think she lost the phone for a second, because I hear a bang, and my mom muttering something before I hear her clearly again.
"Who?" Who? That was a good question, and without even thinking about it I say the first name that pops into my head.
"His name is Daniel"
"We have to meet him" my mom gushes, and I try to look for any excuse I can for why they will NEVER meet my imaginary boyfriend Daniel...
"Its new mom, let me find out if there is even something there." As the words leave my mouth it there is a knock on the door and I am terrified to look up, what if Daniel had been standing there listening to my conversation. I would honest to God die. I carefully look up, Nick Cornwall is standing in the doorway, and I let out a sigh in relief.
"Mom I have to go, speak soon, ok?" before she can say goodbye I hang up and look up at Nick who is now walking into the room a playful smile on his mouth.
"You look swamped" he says sitting down in the chair across from me. He leans back in the chair and puts his hands behind his head for support. I smile a sweet smile at him.
"You have no idea, are you on your way to see Mr. Parker?" Nick nods
"I would rather see you though." I can't help it, but his shameless flirting gets to me. He looks at me before sitting back up, his eyes meeting mine.
"Go out with me?" I raise an eyebrow at him and smirk.
"I don't think that's such a good idea Nick" his face is amused
"Why not? Are you not allowed?" I laugh a little
"Of course, I'm allowed, but I don't date people I work with... or for" I add quickly. Nick gets up from the chair and starts heading to the door.
"To bad, I'm guessing Mr. Parker won't be too happy when he finds out I won't need him to represent me after all." I look up at him quickly, was he trying to blackmail me into a date?
"And why is that?" I ask and if his answer is date me and I'll sign I am going to explode. This was not the day to mess with me.
"The girl I'm interested in doesn't mix business and pleasure. There are hundreds of good lawyers, but only one of you." The line is cheesy, and he has probably used it a million times before, but it worked, I felt flattered by the gesture. He stops in the doorway, waiting for my response.
"Sign the contract, then ask me out. I don't respond to blackmail" I say in a playful tone, and he nods, a satisfied look on his face, he shoots me a sexy wink before leaving the room heading down the hallway to Daniel's office. I smile a little. This man will be trouble, I can feel it. But then again, why the hell not? I am single, he is single, at least he is not married unlike the other man I am drooling after. He is sexy, athletic and makes a great living. So, what if it doesn't work out? I can have fun, right?
