I have always hated my own name.

Four letters and two vowels,

simple and replaceable, easy abbreviation of

Alexander or Alister or Alan.

Yet, the way you pronounced it,

the way you took it and warmed it in your mouth,

as if I was the most precious, the most intimate.

Perhaps I should have kept myself more guarded,

building walls and barriers higher up.

Oh, but how glad I didn’t,

and how glad we happened.

The sun was drawling daydreams.

It coloured your nose tip pink,

eyes blinking in wonder.

The strange tingling feeling,

from my fingertips to my chest,

when you laughed at my jokes, or

when you looked me in the eyes.

I recalled laughing,

as I fell a few steps behind,

reaching out to your shadow,

so yours was holding hands with mine.

The sky was humming a lullaby so foreign.

Lake shimmering through the screen of fog.

We tucked away in the greenwood, so, so far away.

You sat right next to me,

Treetops quietly embraced its leaves,

evening breezes kissed all over your skin.

The wind went quiet,

the night held still.

Stars above us so omniscient,

all secret diaries and aliases revealed.

You looked away but fingers walked in my hand.

Yours intertwined with mine, so soft and warm,

running fingers through my dark hair,

tugging them behind my ear, so gently.

Your hand lingered on the nape of my neck,

pulling me closer, the whole world faded.

Something so genuine, serene and ethereal,
