For the 100th time today I glance over at my phone, hoping for Dante to make his presence known. It had been a whole day seen I'd seen him. Sure, it was weekends and he was probably busy, but one text would have sufficed.
Is that too much to ask for?
I knew I was being unreasonable but after the kiss we shared that was all I bloody thought about. Sighing I rest my head in between my hands and rub my forehead. Maybe I should go to the office and check up on him? I mean, he could have been attacked and was cornered.... Giving up I release a growl of frustration and jump onto my bed while burying myself in the duvets.
It's Dante we're talking about. He's probably laughing on top of the corpses of the rouges themselves....
I chuckle at my train of thought. There was something seriously wrong with me...
"What's so funny?" I lift my head from underneath the duvets and look at my sister who was leaning on the doorway, a smug smile on. I roll my eyes and let my head fall back.
"None of your damn business.." I mumble from inside the duvets and my sentence came out incomprehensible. I hear a huff from Diana as she walks on over.
Well this can't be good.
Suddenly the duvet was ripped off of me. "You have been mopping around for the past days and I'm honestly sick of it." I was about to tell her that I so wasn't when she cut me off. "What? You're boyfriend broke up with you? Boo ho. Cry me a river, at least not here." She gestures around the house. " Where's that awfully cheerful friend of yours? Go out with her or something. At least that would get you out of the house." With that she shimmies out of the room.
I raise an eyebrow at her retreating figure. Well she did make a good point. I silently chuckles. She being more of a mom than mom herself. I frown as mom's thin pale figure sobbing on the cold floor enters my mind. I definitely did need to get out of the house. Reluctantly I sit up, a yawn inescapably escaping my mouth. I pull my hands over my head and stretch my limbs. Exhausted I let them limply fall to the sides.
After freshening up I had decided to go to the library. I stop when leaving my room. My eyes drift towards my phone. Contemplating whether to take it or not, I stand frozen. Finally sighing I turn around. Snatching my phone from off of the table I stuff it in the back pocket of my jeans.
I never know when I might need it...
Stepping down the stairs I make my way over to the door.
"Honey where are you going?" I look back at mom who was descending down the stairs a curious look embedded on her sullen face.
"To the library. I though it would be nice to get some fresh air." She nods smiling yet I could see a hint of fear that flashed across her face, even if it was for a mere moment.
"Be safe"
I chuckle. "It's literally a few blocks away mom. I think I'll be fine." Again uncertainty taints her features before she smiles.
She chuckles at my statement though I could tell it was forced. "I know."
I tightly smile back at her and step out of the house. Inhaling some of the light breeze my body releases some of the tension from before. Sometime it can be so suffocating talking to mom... It's like she sees me as a different person.
Shaking my head I start to make my way towards the library. The sun shines brightly and I smile. I should do this often. Entering the building of the library I beeline my way towards my normal table in the corner. I take a seat and sigh in relief. Suddenly my phone vibrates and I jump in the air knocking over a chair. The noise attracts a lot of attention in the silenced library as many heads turn towards me.
I could feel my cheeks heating up. I mumble an inaudible sorry and pick the chair back up. Once everyone had turned to do whatever they were doing I whip out my phone. The call had died down by them but Dante's name popped out from the home page of my notifications.
Shit
I fumbled with my phone while attempting to scroll towards Dante's contact. Holding my breath I was about to press call when the phone once again began to ring. Dante's name popped up on the screen and I immediately accepted. I engulfed a huge amount of air before lifting the phone to my ear.
"Hello?" I wanted to sound confident but it came out more like a squeak.
Dante's chuckles, his deep velvety voice penetrating my ears. A smile appeared on my face as I realized how much I missed his voice.
"Hello Laura." Gathering myself up I cough to clear my throat.
"Did you need something Dante?" I ask
"Why, yes I do." I could hear the smile in his voice as he spoke. Rolling my eyes I sit back down on the chair.
"What might that be?" I ask a smile replacing my scowl.
"Well... I'm going to take you out tomorrow." I furrow my brows.
"Why? I thought we were going to solve the riddle in your office tomorrow."
He laughs. "Of course that's what's on your mind." I could hear his chuckles through the phone. I frown.
"What's so funny?"
"It's a date Laura." He spoke slowly as if talking to a child. I stare forward dumbfounded before a huh? escapes my mouth.
"I - am - taking - you - out - on - a - date" He once again repeated what he said. Even though he couldn't see it my cheeks heat up.
"I heard you.." I mumble underneath my breath.
Dante once again laughs. I'm glad I amuse him this much.
"What should I wear?" He doesn't say anything for a second as if thinking.
"Casual should be fine." I nod before realizing he can't see me.
"Alright." I was about to ask him where where we were going but he beat me to it.
"And don't think about asking me where, because I'm not telling." I huff and frown.
"Wasn't going to."
"Sure mi amor." I once again furrow my brow. I need to find out what that means. Thinking about when we should reschedule to figure out the riddle I open my mouth to ask him.
"Hey-" I stop as I hear paper fluttering and Dante cursing. I snicker.
"Sorry Laura. My idiot helper cannot keep things under wraps." I could see him glaring at the poor person.
"It's okay.." I smile.
"I'll see you tomorrow?..." I was about to reply before I heard the sound of the line dropping.
Did he just hang up on me?.. I frown before a smile replaces it realizing I was going on a date with Dante tomorrow . I squeal on the inside.
Then panic engulfs me as I realize I don't have anything decent to wear other than tights and a huge bundle of hoodies. I then call the one person I can always depend on in situations like these.
I lift the phone up to my ear.
"Hello, hello. Do you finally have time to hang out with your best friend?"Guilt swirls inside me as I think about how I have been neglecting Amber for the last couple of days. So I say the first thing that comes to mind.
"I'm sorry." I look at the ground while fidgeting on my feet. I hear a giggle before she speaks.
"You're forgiven." I could hear her smiling.
"Can you meet me at the mall? I have an emergency."I ask hopefully.
"Of course, see you in five." With that she cuts the call. Sighing I stand up and exit the library heading towards the mall.
I look around the entrance for a certain red head. Finally I spot her waving at me with a huge smile on her face. There has not been a single day where I had seen that smile upside down. She resonates an aura where you yourself will eventually be pulled in.
I walk on over and hug her. She chuckles.
"Nice to see you too." I pull away smiling.
She smiles back. "Now tell me everything." My smiles falters a bit and I almost want to tell her everything, but I know I can't. She is one of the people I don't want getting caught up in this mess. I couldn't handle it if she got hurt or worse....
We enter the mall and find a good table in the far end of the mall. After telling her about my crisis, minus the demon bit, she stands up and squeals.
"I fuckin knew it." I snicker at her giddiness. She grabs my wrist and pulls me up while dragging me to god knows where. We enter a small cute store. Letting go of my hand she disappears near a huge pile of clothes. I stand there awkwardly while looking around. Making my way over I run my hand over the fabric of the clothes.
Suddenly a hand clasps onto my shoulder and I shriek while pulling away. I look back to see Amber trying her best to hold her laughter in. Frowning I turn back around.
"Okay, okay. I'm sorry. But look what I found." I look back and smile to see her holding a simple but cute crop top. It was a gradient of colors with white and a slight touch of pink. I take the top out of her hands and nod in approval.
She squeals. "Great." Going over I pay for the crop top and exit the store while trailing behind Amber. Remembering a nice set of ripped jeans that Amber owns I turns towards her to ask.
"Of course. I'll bring it over tomorrow to get you ready" I look at her confused.
"Amber, I really don't think that's necessary. I can handle myself." I think
When I look back at her face she looks horrified before bursting out laughing. "Yeah right. Remember the last time you said you could handle yourself?"
My cheeks heat up at the mention of it. It was in grade 6 and I was finally invited to a party, a Halloween party to be exact. At that time I knew I wanted to stand out. So I begged my dad to buy me the scariest costume he could find. In the end I went as a killer clown and let me tell you no one was laughing. In the end I sent half of the kids home crying while the other half just stayed as far away from me as they could. I mean I didn't blame them.
I waved her away. "Fine I see your point, but-" I point a finger at her " It was in sixth grade." She smiles victorious. She turns and walks towards her car and waves. "I'll see you tomorrow..." I wave back and make my way to my car.
By the time I had reached home it was already dark. The second I entered I dashed up the stairs and laid down on my bed. Sighing I look up at the ceiling knowing there was no way in hell I'd be able to sleep tonight.
Just great...
