She was light on her feet. Shoes off, being carried in one hand, and her guitar case in the other, it was almost as she was an undercover spy who was in an undercover war. It wasn’t the first time she snuck out of a house. She had never felt bad, till that night, till she saw Daniel laying in bed. She almost felt bad.
Actually, she did feel bad. She tried to shake it off but she couldn’t. She didn’t want to cry, she didn’t want to feel, but this nice man was about to have his world crash because she was leaving without a goodbye. He must have known that a homeless runaway like her would just take off.
She walked quickly down the stairs. She went to his kitchen and raided his cabins for food. She stole a plastic bag that was tugged away so neatly and tightly. She threw everything she could into the bag. Crackers, bread, apples, oranges, and anything else, while at the same time looking for any small amount of money he may had have lying around the house. She looked in the kitchen island, rushed and nervous, shaky hands all at the same time, her head was twirling and her stomach flipped like a pancake. A very burnt, bad pancake.
The lights suddenly flipped on. She gasped and turned around to see Doc in the doorway, staring with wide, hurt eyes, and confusion running through his head. He tight his robe together and blinked. “What in heavens are you doing?”
For the first time in her left, Violet had felt like a complete shit head for doing what she normally did.
“I’m, um, I’m-“542Please respect copyright.PENANAuBHAxcOUI5
“Are you leaving?” he asked.
She looked down. She shook her head, and tears flowed down like a waterfall, waves crushing to shore, and her heart feeling as though oil was rushing through. “I’m, I don’t know,” she said. “I’m sorry.”
Daniel couldn’t help to get teary eye with her. “Were you looking for money?”
She wiped away her tears. “I’m sorry-“
“Don’t be sorry,” he said. “I knew you had to leave. I knew you can’t stay in one place. Here, let me help you at least.” He went to the cabin, grabbed a cookie jar, and pulled out a giant wad of cash. Her mouth hung open.
He went to the living room and grabbed his black back bag, took out his charts from work, and put the money in it. He returned and took the food out of her head and placed it in the bag. “This is two thousand dollars. Take it, be safe.”
Then he turned around and walked away. He walked back up the stairs and to his room. Violet looked at the money, and then to the stairs. She looked at the front door too. Choices laid out in front of her like a paved road and she had to make the choice. He doesn’t want anything from me. No sex, no favors, no anything. He just gave me this money without a second thought and he had tears in his eyes as he said goodbye.
She started to walk up stairs. Placing the guitar case just outside his door, and knocked on his door and walked in. He looked like he was wiping away his tears. “Daniel?”
“What?” he mumbled.
She suddenly felt angry. “Why . . . Why would you give me this!” she screamed.
He stared at her for the longest time. “You’re going to get pissy with me?”
“Yes! I am going to get fucking pissy! I don’t get you! You don’t want me, you don’t want to have sex, you don’t want me to go though. You haven’t even tried flirting with me. But you get sad when we talk about me leaving. WHY? Why Doc?”
He turned around and snapped at her harder. “Has it ever come across your small, little, messed up mind that some people actually just want to help other people? That other people are 100% okay not getting a reward out of it? Hasn’t it ever come across your small stupid mind that some people care about other’s? Uh? I’m not some pedophile! I’m not going to try anything! OK!? You’re just a child!”
“I’m not a child though,” she corrected him. “I’m a woman.”
“Oh really! You act like a child to me!” he snapped. “What are you still doing here?”
She tighten her lips. “Here,” she said throwing the bag on his bag. “This bag isn’t even that cute.”
She walked away towards her room. Daniel stared at the bag. The money was still in there. The food as still in the bag. Daniel found himself giving a small giggle and smile. He stepped outside just in time to see her closing the door to her room. He looked to the guitar case and just shook his head. Not in confusion or anger. He shook it for knowing such an impossible
