He followed her into the ally. “Hello? Excuse me? Little girl? Are you okay?”
He heard another cough. He saw the girl a little farther down. She was sitting up against the brick wall and hugging her guitar case. She was shaking really badly. Her coughing only got worse. He ran up to her. He slowed down getting closer. “Hello?”
She looked up and pulled out a pocket knife, pointing it at him. “Don’t fucking touch me,” she said in a strong voice. 606Please respect copyright.PENANAVg5yinKkmr
Seeing the way she was holding the knife, he knew she was no threat to him, but he put up his hands to make her feel safer. He got on one knee, to her level. He could barely see her face.
“I’m not going to hurt you,” he stared. “I’m an RN. I work at Meadow Manors. We met each other this morning. Are you okay?”
“Leave me alone!” she cried out with a cough.
“I’m not going to hurt you.”
“Go! Please!” she begged, coughing again. She suddenly dropped the knife and put her hands over her face. She rolled on her side and started to gag. Nothing come out, but it looked like had hurt her. She came back up and lean her own back against the wall.
“My name is Daniel Anderson. I can help you.”
She almost seemed to laugh. “Please, just leave me alone.”
“It’s supposed to get below freezing,” Daniel told her.
“I know,” she said.
“Let me help you.”
“Why? What’s the point of you helping me? I’m going to die one day anyways, and my life ending isn’t going to affect anyone around me, because there is no one around me, so leave me alone and let me die in peace. I want this, okay?”
Daniel stared at her for the longest time. Something inside his chest had hit him hard. Tears came to the surface of his eyes. 606Please respect copyright.PENANA4qBvwXwAJV
Feeling for this girl he had barely known had overcome him. He wasn’t sure why. He could just walk away, but with the four sentences she had spoken, he couldn’t. He couldn’t simply walk away.
He looked her in her dead blue eyes. “Look, let me help you, I have a spare room. When the snow melts, you can go on and leave, okay? But I am not walking away and leaving you here. I don’t care what you want. I am going to help you. Just accept it, okay?” he argued against her.
He eyes started to flutter and her head tilting forwards. She was too weak to argue against him. She blacked out at that point. He shook her shoulders. “Hey! Stay with me!” he screamed. She was mumbling something, but couldn’t speak real words. “Hey! Stay with me!” he screamed again.
She was still breathing. Still going. She fell completely over, but he caught her last second.606Please respect copyright.PENANAXoGf6JhWrL
He grabbed her whole body and picked her up in his arms like a small child. He walked to his car with her. With one hand, he placed her in and buckled her up. She was barely awake.606Please respect copyright.PENANAVPe67wR1yE
He slammed the door and went back for her guitar case. He placed it in the back of his car. He got in and started up the engine. He let the heater startup and put it on full blast.
“You’re going to be okay? Okay? Stay with me!” Daniel said. He started to feel fear but excitement and nervous. He felt emotions running everywhere. For the little girl in his car, he felt fear for her, felt himself questioning if he was doing the right thing. What if she had died? In his arms, in his home, how would that look?
But he didn’t care about that. He worried for her life more than his, and he didn’t even know her name.
“You’re going to be fine,” he said looking at her. He started to drive away to his house. The girl opened her eyes and looked at him. Her eyes were like a flicking candle still, but different. Watching her, Daniel had witnessed the birth of a new spark.
