One of the stars in the sky started moving towards him and he saw that it wasn't a star after all;it was a UFO.
It was one of those red orange Orb things they had called Foo Fighters during the Second World War.
He had seen them often enough in his travels but never established contact with them.
The fact that they rather resembled a hydrogen atom and even buzzed around like one indicated that they were living atomics.
"If you're up to mischief, have done with it,"he called out."You can see that I am half dead as it is.I won't put up much resistance. And you can tell your master to go to hell!"
He had no doubt that it was in collusion with Zorrik and had come to kill him.
The Orb just hovered about twenty feet in the air above him and made no threatening overtures.
Captain Space picked up a rock and hurled it at the entity in anger.
The rock passed right through it.
"If you're playing some sort of cat and mouse game then I am not amused,"he told it."I am human only in body;the inside of me is electromagnetic like you.So if you kill me I will only revert into energy and haunt you for the rest of eternity.Until then, bugger off!"
He turned his back on it and began walking, expecting at any minute to feel a laser bolt tearing into his flesh.
That's when a boulder in front of him started moving in the dark and it wasn't a boulder anymore.
It was the humanoid dinosaur he had first seen near the pissing satyr in the streets of Rome.
Bolgeron.
"She told me where to find you, Captain,"the reptile said."A lovely girl bathed in white radiance."
"I didn't realize that they had a sex,"the scientist mused."It's a pity I can't classify it,it would prove invaluable to science. But I suppose you two are here to escort me back to Zorrik.Very well. But be warned that I will kill him at the first opportunity.I'm done playing the nice guy."
"Captain, I am not here at the behest of Zorrik; I am here to help you stop him."
"Oh,be off with you!I saw how you butchered that poor wretch in the Coliseum. You're a murdering criminal. You are a discrace! The dinosaurs of Sauros are committed to the pursuit of science. They don't run around with pirates killing people."
"That's why I tried to mind touch you back in the city,"Bolgeron said."I am a Galactic Council agent.I had to infiltrate his operation in order to gain his confidence. You must believe me."
" I have no choice but to go with you,"the Captain said."I am at the mercy of you both.Just don't expect me to believe your ridiculous story."
The Orb suddenly shot away and hovered over a huge crag a few hundred feet distant. Then it began to pulsate with a brilliant light.
"It would seem our friend wants us to inspect that rock,"the carnosaur said in amusement.
It turned out that an old science rocket was hidden behind it.
"It's a relic from the old days,"Captain Space said in wonder."It must have been here since the Change. We used to fly out here from the Port City to classify the fauna.I wonder if it's still functional."
"Voltek's Peak is at least two hundred miles away,"Bolgeron told him."It will be an excruciating journey for you.Perhaps you can fix it."
"So what is he up to on the mountain?"the Roman asked him."Is he using the Time Crystal to harness energy from the Sun?"
"I honestly don't know, Captain.Zorikk never brought me with him up there. He only used me as an enforcer.I was never inducted into his inner circle."
After a cursory inspection Captain Space decided that the space vehicle would probably start.
The Orb, seemingly satisfied, suddenly shot off into the night at incredible speed.
They were certainly an intelligent species, whatever they were.
"Cross your fingers,"he told the carnosaur.
"I don't understand,"Bolgeron replied.
"Forget it.It's an old earth expression."
Vrooooooom
The engine fired into life.
"If you betray me, Bolgeron, the entire universe will be enslaved. He won't spare Sauros if they defy him.You know what power he has with the Time Crystal to play with.Think of your planet."
"I am a Galactic Council agent, Captain,"the monster said."I won't betray you."
They strapped themselves in and the rocket roared off towards a final, uncertain destiny.
