They had lost the element of surprise but Zorrik was expecting him anyways so it hardly mattered.
Voltek's Peak was in fact a broad plateau cut into the living rock in the beginning of time.Voltek must have been a giant to have achieved such a feat.Perhaps he had been a manifestation of the Big Bang,the very first sentient being.
The first thing that caught his eye was a huge digital clock on the perimeter.
It was frozen at the number 30.
What the devil?
The legendary Time Crystal itself was set up on an ancient stone altar, still emitting that mysterious light into the Sun over Nefarious.
He was surprised to see that the gem was exactly how he remembered it from his hallucination at the onset of this unpleasant affair.
So had Kylee really come to him after all?
A stolen Galactic Council rocket ship stood framed against the sky not far off.
They could see Zorrik, Gargan the Cyclops, Insecesoid and the mysterious Quasar Man from Smittie's Bar, loading crates into the space transport.
There was no evidence of Zorrik's army.Perhaps the cyborgs and gargoyles were all killed in the fighting back in the fake Rome?
"I don't like it,"the Captain said."It's a trap.The son of a bitch is just going to let us waltz in there unmolested? It's too easy."
"Regardless, Captain, something is imminent.We cannot afford to wait."
The Roman looked up at the purple star overhead.It was beginning to shake visibly in its axis.
A sudden tremor shook the ground and they were forced to grab hold of the rocks to steady themselves.
Then the horror of what was transpiring dawned on him.
"The fool! The Time Crystal is sucking the energy of the Sun! It's going to explode! This entire planetary system will go extinct!"
"We haven't any weapons to confront them with," Bolgeron said."I couldn't find any aboard the rocket.Stay behind me as we approach.As far as I know they only carry standard issue lasers.It will take an atomic disruptor to penetrate my armor."
The dinosaur was right.
In his weakened condition a full laser blast might finally rend the flesh from his bones and he would be done.
He would have to kill Zorrik at the earliest opportunity if they hoped to save the galaxy.And in his pathetic state that seemed unlikely.
"Let's hope for the best ,"he said.

"Gentlemen,so glad you could make it,"Zorrik called out as they approached."Give me a moment and I'll be right with you."
What was the deal with this guy? He acted as though they had just dropped in for a spot of tea and crumpets,and not to thwart his evil plans!
"Give it up, Zorrik,"the space man said."Did you even realize that you're destroying the Sun?"
He started to head for the mess of wires feeding into the Time Crystal from a contraption that looked like a 1950s movie prop.
"I'm putting an end to this right now."
As he reached for it a laser ray suddenly tore into his body and he collapsed to the ground screaming.
"You godamn fool,"Zorrik said."Get over there where I can watch you.Now!"
Captain Space had no recourse but to obey.
Zorrik turned to look at the carnosaur.
"Would you do me a favor and kill him, Bolgeron?"
The agent looked back at his boss.
"This killing has to end, Zorrik.I am placing you under arrest in the name of the Galactic Council."
"Oh,spare me,you idiot! I destroyed the Council.And your planet couldn't be trusted to stay out of it.They're all dead.The Time Crystal erased them from existence as though they had never been there!"
A loud groan of despair came from deep within the space monsters throat.
"I knew about you all along,policeman,"Zorrik told the dinosaur, smiling.
He walked over to the archaic machine,pulling levers and turning knobs.The thing suddenly hummed into life and sparks flew crazily.
On the perimeter the huge digital clock started to count down.

And then he looked at his two henchmen.
"You know, gentlemen, it's hard to believe that I came from a drop of the Captain's blood,"he told Insecesoid and the Quasar Man."It's true.One hundred years ago in a laboratory.Me and Gargan were clones."
He looked back at the Roman.
"This piece of filth sent us deep into the core of Strellus 9 to blow up the core of the planet with a bomb.He had the best of intentions, I won't argue with that.But Holly wasn't like us;she had no resistance to radiation.I had to watch her die miserably.It was a relief when the neutronic bomb finally went off and sent me into eternity....but then a funny thing happened on the way to the forum.His time machine mistook us for the genuine article and brought us back.You never realized that the Helios could reach into death and reassemble atoms,did you, Captain?"
"You're lying, Zorrik,"the scientist hissed.
"Am I? Gargan,come over here please."
The hideous cyclopes obeyed.
"Why don't you look into her eye, Lucien,if you don't believe me?"
"This abomination is not Holly!"
The smile faded from Zorrik's face and he suddenly lashed out with a vicious kick to his adversary's groin.
The Captain fell to his knees in pain,clutching at his balls.
"I said look,you bastard.LOOK INTO THE EYE OF GARGAN!"
He grabbed him by the hair and savagely pulled his face close to the huge eyeball staring at him.
Slowly the cyclopes faded and the pretty face of Holly Ryder stared back at him in reproach.
"It wasn't long before she started to deteriate.She's not like us, Captain.Clone or not,a human cannot survive long coming back from the atomic strata.She turned into a monster.I have had to transfuse the blood of young girls into her just to keep her alive.Holly's a vampire.The girl I love turned into this because of you.Now do you understand why I hate you so much?"
"Holly.... I'm sorry...."
"It's much too late for that, Captain.She hates you just as much as I do."
After a few moments of stunned silence it was the Quasar Man who broke the spell.
"Just kill the old son of a bitch and let's get out of here,"he said."I don't like the way things are looking."
Indeed.The planet was quaking again.Lightning streaked across the sky ominously.

"You're right, gentlemen.You are both free to go.The rocket should get you far away before the party begins.You have your money."
"Listen,you fools,"the Captain said,"he's lying to you.There is no way possible to escape in time.Unless you turn off that infernal machine this galaxy is doomed!"
"Is he telling the truth,Boss?" Insecesoid sounded scared.
"What the hell are you doing,Zorrik?" the Quasar Man accused."This wasn't part of the plan!"
"I'm turning it off,"Bolgeron said."You can't stop me."
Zorrik pushed a button on his utility belt and two duplicates of the carnosaur appeared out of thin air.Before the Galactic Agent could even react they grabbed him in a choke hold and all three of them tumbled over the hillside locked in deadly combat.

"In twenty two minutes we won't be standing here arguing anymore,"the Captain urged."KILL HIM!"
In unison both criminals drew their weapons and fired.
Zorrik laughed at them as the deadly rays failed to penetrate the invisible force field.
"Fools.You didn't think I anticipated this?"
Insecesoid died first.Zorikk's fire took his head off and the huge cockroach took a step backwards before he collapsed.
The Quasar Man tried to run but Zorrik shot him in the back.The alien died screaming....
