She was born a beggar in a bright red onesie,

Taught to want everything but not be selfish,

Childhood spent puzzled with a wooden spoon,

Haunted by words so soothing like honey,

Those words almost convincing her it’s silver,

That same voice could be just as cutting.

One night of shattered glass and cutting—

All ties to that woman and that red onesie,

Taking in hand the mythological silver,

The words finally twisted, “Don’t be selfish,”

Falling from her lips with inherited honey,

No longer feeding the delusion of the spoon.

The next one she had was a plastic spoon,

To toss out with scissors useless for cutting,

Previously used to stir her tea with honey,

Walking straight past a shop with a red onesie,

She spent so much time and found her self—ish,

But far too wary of those with words of silver.

Her heart was of sturdier stuff than silver,

It didn’t scratch so easily as a spoon,

One of many that she bought in a selfish—

Bout of careless self indulgence, cutting,

Fear of the fine out of her life, the onesie,

Finally fading out with the words of honey.

In her contentment time ran like honey,

Slowly passing after anxiety over silver,

One afternoon she purchased a blue onesie,

And green and yellow and a plastic spoon,

Something to gum when his teeth were cutting,

And never for a moment would she be selfish.

After years of estrangement “Don’t be selfish”

Came back again from the voice with honey,

Old and worn from scotch and smoking, cutting,

Into her, etching them deep like in soft silver,

She quickly snatched up her son’s little spoon,
