The Tommies have won. Not necessarily the battle yet, but the war. The foot-sluggers have won just because of the Americans.
Those fucking Jerries. Scotland will show them the valour that we have!
More Germans. Their machine-gun posts are their armour, their men their blood, their country their heart. It has taken three years to cut a large blood vessel. This is a good sign.
We're running out of pozzy. Our men are tired. The United States is our only hope now. I hope that they arrive in large numbers to fend off the Germans. And— shite, a whizz-bang. Moaning Minnie. "Duck and cover, boys! Moaning Minnie is calling!"
"Know your enemies, khakis! The German kaputs! Everything goes kaput! These Huns go kaput, once we shoot them down!" America is joining the war, Europe!

John took out two Huns that were sniping us all day during the dead of night. The Lieutenant found him so able that he let him join the charge. They made it to the other side and killed more Huns until they retreated back. If John keeps this up, he'll become the top marksman of our company.907Please respect copyright.PENANAgVvsHO1m78

Life is hell here. The first week after the first shells left their guns in this battle, I saw most of my friends die in a charge across no man's land. The next week I found slugs in my boots and lice in my hair. I'm sure the lice was there before, but I had only noticed them the second week because of how many I could feel crawling on my skin. The week after I saw my brother die in front of me, and I left his body behind like a coward. The Brits warned us about what trench life would be like, but we were so cocky that we thought this would be like a dream. We knew it wouldn't go by quick, just quick enough for us to come out alive.
I'm in for digging duty. I can hear the Huns' digging no less than a few yards ahead of me. Jim is poking his rifle up ready to shoot them when they get close. After that, I have to dig hard and find the enemy trench. Hopefully the Brits can help us in this.

I know that a mum should never bury her son, but I am due for an attack over No-Man's Land to the Huns across. I know that you have already lost your other son, and I am not able to counter for the loss. Please know that I love you and my sister back home. I wish I could have your biscuits again, the biscuits here are hard and inedible.907Please respect copyright.PENANAVsK9HZT9mx

I hear the French whistles, and the Lieutenant sounds our advance. The French have sabotaged the German machine-guns, so our Lieutenant has high hopes. After we reach the half-way mark, however, I'm already on the ground. Not because I was shot, but because I'm afraid. I'm scared. I just want to go home.

I deliver the letter today, and not at the end of the week, because we have taken the enemy trench. We have taken the dead from the advance and have started rushing through the village. The Germans have fled. Perhaps this is a turning point in the war.

I've always wondered how the Americans are doing on their line. My Lieutenant says that they might defeat the Germans within a week, but I call that a lie. He only says that to heighten our spirits I know that I told you I'm done fighting, but I have more than a month before I can go home. I'm looking forward to seeing you and the family again.907Please respect copyright.PENANAesoG9LlMnU

I'm going home soon. I'm happy to be leaving Hell.
We have left this letter for you, Sir, because we have deserted. The war is no longer worth fighting for. Our country has lost, and we're tired. We leave you with this flag, so that you might die along with the country while we cowards flee away into the crowds.907Please respect copyright.PENANAz4ZFcjZ0H1
