See that lagoon? Pretty right? Well, let me tell you the legend of La Laguna Del Hoyo. Most of you know that I’m from Guatemala, I’m from Monjas, Jalapa. But Llano Grande is a small town that’s part of Monjas, that’s where I lived. Not far from there in another town, is a lagoon so majestic yet so villainous. Some rumors say that the lagoon has no end and that it was placed by a huge snake, which is still chained in the depths of its waters. Other stories tell that one day the lagoon will completely cover the municipality of Monjas. The lagoon ACTUALLY has NO end, nobody has found the end of the lagoon. It’s THAT deep, people drown there a lot. Yes, people actually go swimming there! There are lots of legends about it but this is the main one.
It is said that in the place where the lagoon is located, there was a town, in which one day a poor old man appeared in search of food.
He approached his inhabitants for each house, but in all they denied him his compassion until he arrived at the house of a noble lady who offered him food.
As a way of thanking her kindness, the old man warned her of a catastrophe that would happen that day in the town, so she had to get out of there before it happened.
He told her that the town would be flooded with water from the heavy rains and that there would be no way out.
When telling her this, he put the condition that she would live only if when she left the town she should not look back, because if she did she would turn into stone.
So the lady left the town fleeing with the fear of being trapped in that flood
She ignored it and turned around out of curiosity and from there what the old man had told then all the people who lived there drowned some and the town was flooded as predicted until it became a deep lagoon.
It is rumored that the lagoon has no end and that a huge chained snake was also placed there in the depth of said lagoon that protects from any exploration that one wants to carry out.
It is also said that one day that lagoon will collapse until it covers the municipality of Monjas in the same way. To date, the people who live nearby or who take care of it say that people can still be heard in the lagoon, as well as the noise of animals and roosters. Although in reality, near the lake there is nothing but these sounds come from it.
I went here one time, I stood on the railing—we were up in a little area where people would easily just fall off and land in the lagoon—and instantly, something felt off about the lagoon. It’s aura was weird, kinda scary…
