After a night spent on the Nevada plains, the five teens were at the questionable site before noon.
“Okay, this is where Colton said that distortion was,” Harley said.
“This is it?” Infinity asked skeptically.
“I mean, that’s what Cole said,” Cameo returned, equally dubious.
“Are y’all sure?” Ethaniel inquired.
“It’s a bush, Harley! You can’t be serious!” Tanner exclaimed. “It. Is. A. BUSH!”
“Yes, yes, I realize that, Tanner.” Harley answered disinterestedly. She was on her hands and knees under the bush, feeling around in the center of the brambles. “Almost… Got it!”
The earth rumbled beneath their feet and a small crack, about five feet long, split under Infinity’s feet. She backed up uncertainly.
“C- Cameo?” she stuttered, eyes wide, internally cringing. She hated that, after all he had done to her, he was still the one she turned to.
“It’s okay, just come here,” he whispered soothingly. She continued to back up until the crack was no longer under her feet, then she rushed over to the rest of the group.
A five by five crater was now visible in the barren Nevadan ground. Cameo leaned over the gaping hole.
“Guys,” he gasped. “Stairs.” Cautiously, he began to descend.
When he reached the bottom of the staircase, he called for the others to follow. Soon, all five were crowded in front of the heavy metal door.
“It’s got a keypad. And we don’t know the code,” Tanner said, voice low. Behind him, Infinity’s head shot up and her eyes flashed red.
“11201942.”
“What?” Cameo asked.
“11201942.” Infinity pushed past Tanner and Cameo and knelt by the keypad.
“One.”
“One.”
“Two.”
“Zero.”
“One.”
“Nine.”
“Four.”
“Two.”
The door squeaked open on rusty hinges and Infinity moved into the passage like she was in a trance. Cameo grabbed her arm.
“Infinity, stop. Let me go first.”
“11201942.”
“What? Infinity, what’s wrong with you?” he asked, voice choked with worry. Tanner, Harley, and Ethaniel stood silently, faces lined with confusion.
“11201942.”
“Infinity, snap out of it!” He clapped his hands loudly. Infinity jolted and her eyes dulled and faded back to their natural blue color.
“What? What happened?”
“This is exactly why I’m going first,” Cameo growled, cursing in Russian under his breath. “Ничего из этого не в порядке.”
He pushed the door wide open and stepped into the room beyond. An eerie green glow enveloped him and cast shadows over the walls. A computer terminal sat in the middle of the cavern. Lining the walls were huge glass tanks, filled with some strange liquid.
A gasp escaped his lips.
“Cameo? Are you okay? What is it?” Infinity came up beside him.
He pointed at the tank nearest to him and walked up to it.
A figure was suspended in the elixir. Dark brown hair billowed around the peaceful face.
Cameo’s eyes darted from the tank to the girl beside him. He reached up his shaking hand and tentatively traced the symbol etched into the glass.
