“So, you guys are for real about Jaiden? No joke, he’s a real life Anakin Skywalker?” Infinity asked in the car.
“Yeah,” Tanner responded. “Turn left here.” She spun the wheel and merged into the next lane.
“Wow. You know…” She paused. “You guys know that’s our fault, right? I mean, it really is.” She didn’t say what everyone was thinking: It was really Cameo’s fault. If he hadn’t turned Infinity in, they wouldn’t have had to break her out, therefore they would have no reason to set the White House on fire. Cameo could have just slit his throat or shot him and been done with it. Instead…
Well, they all knew what the ‘instead’ was.
“Oh please,” Cameo growled. “He deserved what he got and you know it.”
“Like I deserved what I got? We don’t even know why he wanted me!”
“I could guess it well enough.”
“Really, Cameo? What do you think he could have possibly wanted with me?” Infinity’s eyes stayed on the road, but she was white-knuckling the steering wheel and her tone was deadly.
The last time they had been in a moving vehicle together, Infinity had told him that, although he had lost a lot, he hadn’t lost everything. He still had her, after all. But it’s funny what a few hours can do.
Now, here they were, barely able to stand each other’s presence.
Cameo tucked his legs up to his chest and buried his face in them.
Infinity glanced at Harley.
‘This is still going on?’ she mouthed. Harley nodded.
‘It’s gotten worse.’ she responded.
‘Worse?’
‘You know. Since you left.’
Infinity had known leaving would hurt him, but the Russian had been bad enough then. If it was worse, she was surprised he wasn’t suicidal or in an insane asylum somewhere.
She shook her head. She didn’t want to care about him. Not anymore. Not after what he did.
He wouldn’t get to break her anymore.
“Tanner said you guys set up shop in Yellowknife, right? And that’s where we’re headed?” She looked at Harley.
“Yeah. We took all the kids whose families didn’t immediately respond to the international call and dispersed them to homes throughout the city until we could get them back home. They all made it back safely, and the orphans were easily fostered or adopted.”
“So, really, in a way, the Fall was a good thing.”
“Huh, I guess you’re right. I never really thought about it that way.”
“The Fall was a good thing,” Infinity breathed to herself. “And it was over.” She sighed. “It ain’t over anymore."276Please respect copyright.PENANAZjQq7kZ3iU
