The plane was right on time. As they boarded, a butler greeted them with promises to be at their beck and call and a note from Charisma.

“Well, fantastic,” Ethaniel groaned. “What did you do to her?”
Cameo shrugged. “I’d rather not say,” he smirked, trying to play it cool. But Infinity looked at him and their eyes locked. She knew. She knew everything. She could tell everyone how weak he used to be. How weak he still was.
But she didn’t.
The moment passed and Cameo let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. Soon enough, they were wheels up and in the air, staring down at the United States. Cameo leaned back and closed his eyes, submitting to the dark world inside his mind.
Infinity sighed and slid her gaze to the rest of the group.
“So, what’s been going on with you guys? I mean, Cameo said that you guys got all the kids back home, but that couldn’t have taken six months, could it?”
Harley, Tanner, and Ethaniel exchanged tense glances. Eventually, Tanner cleared his throat.
“Well,” he began, eyes darting nervously around the cabin, “it only took about four months. We took a two-month break in between. We, umm, needed a break from all the, uh…” He trailed off, unsure of what to say next.
“Crying parents?” Harley supplied with a shaky smile.
“Right, crying parents,” Tanner nodded. “Anyway, Ethaniel was complaining about not being able to spend enough time with Harley.”
Ethaniel gasped. “I was not!” he exclaimed indignantly.
“Yeah, you were. And don’t interrupt,” Tanner said, elbowing Ethaniel in the ribs.
“OW!” Ethaniel yelled. Cameo’s eyes shot open and he sat up quickly.
“What? What happened?” he asked, frantically searching the cabin.
“Nothing,” Ethaniel grumbled, rubbing his torso. “Tanner just forgot that I got shot three months ago, and that I’m still not totally healed, that’s all. I’ll live.” Cameo sat back down, hard, then leaned forward and put his head in his hands, muttering things in Russian. Infinity stared at him for a few seconds, then shook herself and looked away.
Harley leaned over and placed a hand on Ethaniel’s knee.
“You know the doctor said it’d be a few years before the pain goes away,” she reminded him.
“Yeah, well, that idiot also said I'd probably never be able to fight again, yet here we are,” he snapped back. “Anybody got Tylenol?” he asked, grimacing and doubling over. Harley tugged open her backpack and pulled out a package of Tylenol and a water bottle. He gratefully threw back the pills and lay back in his seat. “This is gonna be a long trip,” he murmured.
No one disagreed.
