I stood there, my breathing heavy as I looked around the battlefield. Fires let smoke and ash into the air. My Armor weighed down on my shoulders and my sword was limp in my hand. We’d been fighting for what seemed like days, and it didn’t end. The clang of metal against metal rang through the crisp morning air. I was catching a break behind a maple tree, when I heard a horse whining.
No.
Why was she here?
”Thana! What in my mothers name are you doing here?”
“Will please you have to listen. None of your overprotectiveness right now. This was only a distraction. There’s a bigger army, headed f-for the castle.” Her breathing was ragged, something was off.
I realized then she was hurt. She collapsed into the grass next to me. There was a knife in her side.
”Thana?! God no. No! What happened? Who did this?” Her blood stained my hand.
”Will, how do you think I found out about the other army?” She laughed while coughing. “I came across a spy when I was in the woods. You should see how I left him.” Even on deaths door did she make jokes.
”Thana, please. I need you. I love you.”
”Will, your kingdom needs you. You n-need to lead them to victory.”
”W-what do you mean?”
”Your brother. I saw him on m-my way here. You are the kingdoms heir now will. I love you.” She reached up to kiss me one last time.
”Thana…” I was sobbing. “No. Please, not you. Not now.”
Then I changed my mindset to what she’d said. I was the heir now. I was their king.
I will make her proud.
