I look frightened at Andy. She nods with comfort and pats my shoulder. My heart skips a beat as I amble slowly to the stand and Mr. Ethics swears me in. My nerves are jumping everywhere; this is not what I was expecting. But, I somehow feel like I am going to be okay. What is really going through my mind is, why would they call me to the stand if I am against them?
"Sirrah, how long have you and Alchemy been friends?" Tannya asks me.
"Late Elementary early middle school," I answer.
"Was she a bully then?"
"She was." My eyes wander around the courtroom. Being put on the spot is not a good feeling, but I am doing good trying to hold it together.
"Did she bully you then?"
"She nitpicked at me."
"About?"
"My clothes, my hair, my glasses," I say my voice brittle.
"Did you say anything to her about it?"
"Not really . . . no. When it started to really bother me, I asked her to stop. She did for a while but I think she moved on to bully another person. After a few months, she started on me again." I tell what I remember.
"Did she ever say why?"
"No. She never told me why. I just thought she was having a bad day and I was the closest to take it out on." I think I can see where this is going. I can feel like they are going to try to make me look like the bad guy . . . err . . . girl.
"Well, that is all," Tannya says abruptly and sits back next to Alchemy.
I can hear Alchemy silently scold Tannya for not asking me the right questions, but there is nothing that can be done once a student attorney sits down.
Andy stands up. "Have you ever bullied anyone, Sirrah?"
"No. It is not in my nature to hurt people on purpose." I answer feeling a little better that Andy is now asking me some questions. I had a notion that Tannya was going to rip me to pieces.
"The day that Alchemy attempted to assault you. What happened?"
The people listen in anticipation as I tell the details of what happened.
"She was angry with me because someone had told her that I caused her boyfriend to break up with her." I go back to the day that started all of this.
"Do you know who that someone was?"
"Her boyfriend Louis . . . I believe. He said that I said they should break up and he should be with me. I said none of those things. Sydnie." I found myself calling my sister's name before I could stop myself.
Sydnie stood up and all eyes shift to her.
"Sydnie Desiree Joy Winters," She says her name for the Y.G.s.
Clarence nods. "Go on." Allowing Sydnie to say her piece as a side witness.
"Sirrah did not say any of that. Sirrah isn't even interested in Louis like that. Now, I did question their relationship that day, Alchemy's relationship with Louis." Sydnie eyes everyone in the courtroom, "All of you should know that Sirrah would never even say anything like that. Even if she did like him like that, she'd respect their relationship and leave well enough alone." Sydnie states. "But, Alchemy has bullied a lot of people for different things. Sirrah, being as kind as she is, didn't really understand why Alchemy, her supposed best friend would do that to her. Sirrah got the worst part of it. That is all." Sydnie sits down ending her statement and everyone shifts back to me.
I look at the counsel and they look a little baffled at Sydnie's statement. I think they didn't believe that this would have gone as far as it has. I knew that Sydnie would stand up for me, and I truly appreciated it to a great extent.
Alchemy slinks down in her chair knowing she is possibly in a lot of trouble. I watch the room. A few people that were sitting on Alchemy's side moves to my side and sits there.
"So, Alchemy came at you because of something that was not even true?" Andy clarifies.
"Right," I say.
Andy turns to the counsels. "Sirs and ma'am's, Sirrah has been a model student for a long time. Never once has she been in trouble or anything of the sorts. I am positive that her friends and some fellow students, as well as teachers will tell you so themselves. The only thing she is guilty of is being a great friend to someone who was jealous, ungrateful, and didn't deserve her kindness." Andy says in her ending statement.
I step down and go back to my seat along with Andy.
Clarence looks to Tannya to call any more witnesses since Andy has done her closing. Tannya looks completely stressed and frazzled.
Clarence asks, "Did you have any more questions for Sirrah, Tannya? I saw you looked a little . . . confused."
"Yes, I did," She says her voice a little shaky.
I get back up and sit back at the stand. Tannya stands up and approaches me.
"Did you ever pick on Alchemy, Sirrah?"
This is where they try to make me look like the bad girl in this whole situation.
"No, maybe jokingly but I never meant any type of harm. I would also tell her that I was joking especially if it hurt her feelings." I admit. "Friendly banter, if you will."
"Friendly banter?"
"Yes. But, after a while, around freshman year, she started taking it seriously. Getting upset and crying, so I stopped. She didn't or didn't want to stop."
Tannya looks a little flustered. It's very clear that she has no chance of the counsels seeing Alchemy's side in this.
Tannya turns to Clarence. "Alchemy White is not a bad person. She just had a few bad days. However, the real enemy is Sirrah Winters. Yes, it was wrong for Alchemy to have slapped Sirrah. But, did Sirrah really have to shove her over a metal bar in the lunchroom? Was that the only way to get Alchemy to stop or protect her? No, Sirrah could have simply shoved her elsewhere." She goes to sit down ending her own closing statement.
"Sirrah," Clarence calls for me to step down.
I step down again and go back to my seat. I am hoping that we can win this so I can go back to my clubs but mostly to give a voice to the students that are being bullied. Principal Ethics is also among the counsels. But, he is there to observe and when the trial is over, give the punishment for said act.
