Sophia met them just outside the hotel’s gates. She checked Aurora and ordered Logan to head to St. Phillipa’s hospital, as she had arrangements with them. She also called ahead.
“This is Dr. Sophia van der Merwe. I’m coming in with my patient, file number 09741. The patient is suspected to have overdosed on GHB. I need a nurse on standby. We’re ten minutes out.”
“You’re a doctor?!” Adam and Logan asked surprised once she hung up.
“Always have been.”
She asked Logan and Adam to describe the events surrounding Aurora before they called.
“Let’s hope he’s still using the same drug after ten years.”
“Will she be okay?“” Adam asked hoarsely, looking at his mother.
“She will.” Sophia reassured him. “But you’re whistling.” She turned his chin left and right. “You fought him?”
The boy nodded.
“You may have a stridor. Both of you need to get checked out at the emergency room. Once you’re cleared, come find us.”
When they got to St. Phillipa’s, a male nurse was on standby; he moved Aurora to a gurney, and together with Sophia, they rushed off. Logan and Adam parked the car and checked into the emergency room.
Logan had a mild concussion and a sprained wrist. Adam was diagnosed with hoarseness and stridor, like Sophia had said. They were both given pain medication. The doctor advised Logan not to drive for a few days and to rest his hand for a week before checking back in at the hospital.
Adam was put on a soup diet and told to keep a cold pack or ice on his throat for a few days. If the breathing whistle continued after four days, he had to check back in at the hospital.
At first, the doctor and nurse were sceptical about their injuries, especially Adam’s, as he had large red finger marks on his throat.
Several times during his scan, the nurse asked him whether his injuries were caused by Logan. She seemed really concerned that he might be afraid to admit that Logan had hurt him.
“We were attacked by someone else.” He managed to get out in a whisper. Breathing already hurt; talking hurt even more.
Still, the woman didn’t seem convinced, and Adam gave up on trying to convince her.
An hour later, Logan and Adam were released, and they hurried to the nurse station for directions to Aurora’s room.
It was on the third floor, room fifty-nine.
They saw Aurora through the window first. She was connected to an IV and had cables coming out of her mouth and nose. Sophia was watching the machines beep away while checking some papers on a clipboard.
“Everything I have after this, I owe you.” Logan said. His eyes were tired, and he looked on the verge of tears. “You saved my wife, my marriage, and our future.” He turned to the boy then. “I can’t thank you enough or ever pay you back.”
There was a softness in Logan’s eyes. He really was grateful and was not just saying it.
Adam turned back to watch Aurora. “She’s my mother.”
Logan didn’t need to thank him. Aurora had said she would make him her son. As far as he was concerned, he was already her son, and she was his mother. If anything happened to Aurora, he wouldn’t have a home anymore.
“Right you are.” Logan chuckled. “And I guess I haven’t been much of a father. I promise to make it up to you.” He laid his hand on the boy’s shoulder.
Sophia signalled for them to enter and updated them on Aurora’s condition. Nicholas had used a drug called GHB to incapacitate Aurora. It’s something he used to use on her since they were teenagers. Sophia went on to explain that Nicholas had overdosed Aurora, which is why she was unresponsive and shaking. She also had respiratory depression, which is why there were tubes connected to her face to give her oxygen.
Sophia didn’t know when Aurora would wake up; she said they had to wait and hope for the best.
