On a typical Saturday night,

a clear starry night it was—

86° degrees, so it was quite warm.

My mother, sister and I

took a stroll to the neighbor's house.

She was elderly and sick with emphysema,

so my mom made her some soup to take over.

The neighbor's name was Dorothy.

She was sitting alone, and we kept her company

in her house, nice and cool—

our house didn't have air conditioning,

so it was a hot box with humidity.

As my mother and Dorothy chatted

for a few moments,

it was more like a couple of hours.

I happened to look at the window

of the front door—a bright blue flash

and a loud crash.

We ran out of the front door to see a '74 Chevy,

the corner pole claimed another one.

It was 7 dead, and it was 11 pm.

They were taken out one by one,

I can't say what they were thinking, in their last moments on Earth.

As souls departed the same.

Who was to blame?
