When Luna finally got home, she walked up to her room and flopped down onto her bed. Groaning, she pulled her pillow over her head. She hated the class she needed to take to get her licence. It was mostly common sense; the only things they really taught you were how to make poisons and how to use weapons. And if you already knew that you were basically stuck doing nothing for an hour a day for two months minimum. And she knew that her mom would be home any minute scolding her about being nicer to her teacher.
The front door to her house opened. Speak of the Devil, she thought. But when she listened, the footsteps she heard didn't sound like her mothers. Her blood ran cold. Someone's in the house.
Luna grabbed her throwing knives from her sock drawer and slipped down the hallway along the wall, where the floor was less likely to creak in the old house. She glanced down the stairwell into the entryway. One shadow, maybe female, but Luna couldn't tell. She palmed one of her knives and snuck down the stairs.
One step towards the figure. Definitely female.
Two steps. She grabbed her knife and got it ready to attack.
Third step. Creeeeaak. The floorboards gave away her position.
The intruder turned around to reveal herself. "Luna? What are you doing home early?"
"Jules? What are you doing in my house?!"
"Oh. Um. Stealing some of your mom's brownies."
"Why?"
"...It's my pre-assassination ritual."
"No, seriously."
Jules winced.
"...Seriously?"
"Yeah."
"My mom's brownies are your pre-assassination ritual? You do realize I could just give you the recipe?"
"But no-one bakes them like your mom! They're sooo fudgey, and the drizzle of chocolate sauce on top...! Even my kitten likes them!"
"You're not supposed to feed a kitten chocolate, Jules."
"Oh." Jules paused. "Maybe that's why they all keep dying..."
Luna sighed. "Want to talk while you're here? I could use a rant..."
Jules lit up. "Anytime, babe. What's going on now?"
"Well, as if my mom didn't screw everything up enough already, she decided to join my Assassins Ed class..."
