It wasn’t just Dominic who visited me today.
Scott Orson stood right in front of me as clear as a reflection on a mirror. I found him a few minutes after Dominic had left.
“Are you lost?” I asked him. “If my memory stands correct, this isn’t Dominic’s house neither is yours.”
He smirked at me. Scott Orson. Always dire and cocky. He placed his hands in his pockets as he watched me closely.
I sighed as I closed my notebook. “Let me guess; are you here to check if my memory’s still in place?”
His smirk deepened and the light in his eyes danced with amusement.
“Sorry to disappoint you; it still is.” I knocked on my head like it’s a door. “Or maybe, just maybe, you’re here to tell me,” I cleared my throat and I tried to mimic the Scott Orson. “Stay away from Dominic. You’re not good for his celibacy.”
That earned me a cackle out of him.
“You’re a terrible actress.” he said, still laughing at me.
“It’s because I’m a girl and I don’t do cross-dressing.” I retorted.
He stopped laughing and his eyes bored in the soles of my pupils.
“If you’re here to tell me to stay away from Dominic, we both know it won’t work. You know how hard his head is.” I said.
“I already know that… but I was supposed to say that.” He shrugged. “But I don’t know. It seemed that the winds have changed.”
“Like it became solid change?” I asked. “Because if it did then it’ll be so sad.”
He laughed. “No.”
“Then what are you doing here?”
He took a deep breath. He looked at me as if I’m the legendary Swan Lake musical piece.
“It’s your eyes.” he said. “They’re the saddest rainbow I’ve ever seen.”
Music Majors. Trained poets of the millennium.
I tried not to laugh but then the sound that came out of my mouth came wrong. “I believe it doesn’t match any rainbow. Maybe the icicles that falls from the sky. You call them snowflakes.”
“Yes, they are.” He looks insane to me and his stares make me feel very uncomfortable. “They’re beautiful.”
I raised my eyebrows at him. “You speak with ulterior motive. Classic Scott Orson. What really made you come here?”
“I already told you.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“You can check the size of my nose if it satisfies your conscience.”
“Liars go to hell.”
He wrinkled his nose. “Huh? Why do I feel heaven by your side?”
I grimaced at him and he rolled his eyes skyward.
“Would you care if I ask you for a cup of coffee?”
I didn’t see that one coming.
“I don’t drink coffee.” I said to turn him down.
“Why are you rejecting me?” he gawked at me. “It’s a once in a life time offer.”
“Then you’re free to go. Bye.” I prompted as I waved my hand at him.
He groaned with irritation.
I looked back at him. “All roads lead to dire circumstances with you, Scott Orson.”
“Wrong. All roads lead to Starbucks, Anna Marie. And they’re at every block even in Sleepy Hollow.”
I huffed at him. “You very well know that I’m Dominic’s girlfriend.”
“And he’s your boyfriend. I know.” He prompted and there goes that signature smirk of his.
“Shouldn’t you be responsible of your actions?”
He snorted and I felt abashed. “I am only responsible for what I say and not for what you understand, Anna Marie.”
“And you asking me out turns me off pretty big time.”
He flinched at me. I shook my head to shake off the fog that’s going on inside.
“I don’t even know why I’m talking to you.” I stood up and I head straight for the door.
“We’re already out.” He said and my hand gripped the door knob tightly. “So that doesn’t count.”
I turned back to glare at him.
“I’m not asking you out on a date. If that’s what you want to hear. Clear your conscience.” His palpable expression made him look like he’s insincere.
“I just want to talk.”
I crossed my arms as I took a few steps towards him.
“What do you want to talk about?”
He sighed in defeat as he rolled his eyes skyward. “About you and Dom.”
“What made you so interested about us? You seem not to be our biggest fan.”
“You’re right. I’m not.” He prompted and I gaped at him. “I’m worried about Dominic, okay? And it seems to me that it is okay with you to put him in some dramatic landslide. Do you have any feelings at all?”
“Yes, I do have feelings, Scott. And as much as I want to hide them in a box and seal it forever everyone wants to be Pandora.”
He sneered at me. “You’re little dark side.”
“I don’t dwell in the dark.” I retorted. “I do care about Dominic and I do appreciate your concern. But it’s not in my hands to unlove him. It’s not my decision if he doesn’t want to leave me alone.”
“Can’t you just walk away or something? Your situation is getting out of hand.”
“Have you been in love, Scott?” I asked and he scoffed at me. “Probably not yet. That’s why you’re so brave to let go of these things.”
He laughed. “You have no idea, Anna Marie.”
I nodded as I hugged myself. “You’re right. I don’t.”
“Dom’s a douche bag.”
“He’s your best friend.”
“He is. I made it my duty to make sure he ends up happy with his first love.”
I frowned at him but he smiled at me. That kind of smile that is happy but is envelop in sadness.
“I don’t really believe in romance.” He chuckled. “But I believe that it’s possible to still love someone occasionally even though you’re not loved in return.” He wrinkled his nose. “Just make sure Dominic gets de-virgin-ized before you leave planet earth, Anna Marie.”
I had to laugh at that. “You really have a dirty mind.”
His gaze darkened at me. “I don’t have a dirty mind, just a sexy imagination.”
“You’re a good friend to him, Scott.” I said.
He smiled. “I guess I am even though you did give me the benefit of the doubt.”
“But I mean it. You do care for him.”
He looked at me like he’s seeing the sunset. My eyebrows creased with uneasiness. But then I saw he dropped those curtains down in his eyes to shield that emotion and he’s back to Scott Orson that he is.
“I think it takes two to love and remember.” He said.
“I think it is.” I countered.
“Here,” he threw me a pack of blue berries.
“Are you trying to poison me?”
He pointed his head while walking backwards. “It’s for your brain. Live well—I mean, eat well.”
I chuckled. “Scott,”
He raised his eyebrows at me.
“When I leave, could you promise me that Dominic maintains his sanity? He can get a little bit insane, you know. I don’t want him to get depressed.”
He simpered at me. “Don’t worry, Anna Marie. I’ll make sure he’ll be all right.”
I smiled with affection. “Thanks, Scott.”
Maybe Scott Orson is just one of those sad souls roaming the world. One of those who can’t find and get what their heart desires so they hide in their masks of deception—deep, deep, deep in the dark where no one would know how a noble knight is just a cowering child.
And yeah, maybe he’s bad, maybe a little bit, but when he smiles, that one that could make the sun set, I only see the good in him.
