I almost lost my virginity last night.
That could be an understatement. We didn’t even know—I mean—we’re aware of what’s happening—but one thing is for sure: NOTHING HAPPENED LAST NIGHT.
I never lock my door so mama came earlier with her arms positioned in a 90 degree angle on her waist. I was about to explain when she found a peacefully sleeping Dominic on my bed.
But nothing happened is what I didn’t tell her. Sometimes it just fascinates me to give her the benefit of the doubt. She could wait until Sunday to interrogate me. That is if I could still remember the details.
So mama went back to her nice and loving mom feature when I brought Dominic completely awaked and fixed at the dining room to have breakfast with us. Dominic stood frozen on his feet in front of her.
“Good morning, Mrs. Heaven.” He greeted her.
My mom nodded at him. “Good morning, Dominic. Get inside and join us for breakfast.”
I held his hand and he dipped his head down low to whisper to me. “Should I defend ourselves that nothing happened last night?”
I snorted and I shook my head.
I led Dominic to sit beside me and our breakfast greeted us with a happy face. Mama just loved doing the plating. I enjoyed it because it helps me keep the good mood.
“Weren’t your parents wondering where you were last night?”
Mama asked him and I bit back a protest. Just because I kept silent about it doesn’t mean she should turn her curiosity to my boyfriend.
Dominic swallowed his orange juice before answering. “Probably they were if they’ve noticed.” He looked at his wrist watch. “My mom’s probably doing Zumba by now and my dad’s on his way to work. So,” he shrugged off. “no worries, Mrs. Heaven.”
I tightened my grip on his hand. I wonder what it was like to have so busy parents. It must be too hard for him. I realized I don’t know that much about Dominic as much as he does about me.
“Your mom does Zumba?” mama asked, bewildered.
“Yes, it’s her daily exercise.”
“What do your parents do?”
“They’re both working for a music company. They create musical scores for TV programs and movies.”
“Well, that figures why you’re in music school.”
Dom scratched the back of his neck shyly. “Yeah.”
I, on the other hand tried so hard to finish my meal before mama could interrogate him further.
“You have quite an appetite, Anna.” Mama noticed. “Smaller bites.”
I sneered at her. “Absolutely.”
“Maybe we should invite Dominic more often so that you’d eat well.” I almost swallowed the fork.
“Mama,” I chided. But she ignored me and she turned back her attention to Dominic.
“Help yourself, Dominic.”
My helpless boyfriend just smiled in return and continued eating.
Right after breakfast, Dominic saw the line of medicine I must take every day. Well, I guess I can’t keep secrets now. But we both ignored it as if they’re just vitamins. And then he saw the berries.
“I didn’t know you eat berries.” He said.
“They’re from Scott.” I admitted.
His eyebrows raised in shock. “From Scott? He goes here?”
I nodded. “You don’t know?”
“No.” he frowned upon saying that. I held his arm to ease him. “He’s just concerned.”
“Yeah right. My celibacy or you?”
I snickered. “Dom, you’re so cute when you’re jealous.” I pinched his cheek. Then I saw mama coming towards us from my periphery. So I shoved Dominic out the front door before her interview with my boyfriend goes farther heights.
“We’re leaving, mama!” I shouted as I half opened the door.
“Already? Anna, wait!” she ran to the foyer before I disappeared out the door.
I turned to her reluctantly. Concern filled her eyes immediately that I had to close the door before Dominic hears what she’s about to say.
“Anna, did you lost your virginity last night?”
I pulled back the urge to laugh. But this was serious topic for my mom especially when her daughter was mid-dying and wanted to experience everything in her life.
“No.” I answered and she exhaled with obvious relief. I held on the door knob. “But I’m about to.” She opened her mouth to protest but I was already out the door.
But of course that was a joke. Though I wasn’t so sure if it was.
Dominic waited for me at the front porch, if he had heard something he didn’t say. I grabbed his arm immediately and we dashed out of the fence before mama changed her mind and locked me up in my room to prevent the apocalypse from striking.
“Anna,”
“Hmm?”
“Where are we going?”
We both stopped mid-tracks. I turned to him and shrugged.
“It’s a Wednesday.” He said and I nodded. “Which means it’s a school day.”
“Oh,” I felt abashed. “Then I should probably get back home. Be careful on your way to school.” I tip-toed and whispered a kiss on his lips.
I started walking away when he held me back. I raised my eyebrows at him expectantly. He sighed in surrender.
“I’m supposed to do a last minute rehearsal…”
“Is that a complaint?”
“No.” he flinched. “Of course not. Where do you want to go?”
I shrugged again. “Wherever the wind takes me.”
“How precise you are.” he prompted and I grinned at him. He raised his arm with his hand open towards me. I reached for it and he intertwined it with his.
I always love the feel of his fingers trapped on mine. The thrill that it brings to my skin, burning it all up like coals on a fireplace.
We started walking down the path.
“I wonder where this will lead us.” Dominic said.
“Only one way to find out.” I sighed.
So we followed the trail. The long journey—while walking—had brought us to streets, streets, streets and streets until the Tower of London.
“I thought this trail would lead us to El Dorado.” I wrinkled my nose and he chuckled. His Adam’s apple moved up and down his throat. It’s fascinating to look at.
Then he outstretched his arms in front of me. All he needed now was a placard that said: FREE HUGS.
“Welcome to the famous Tower of London! I am Dominic Savio—not the saint but named after the saint—and I will be your official tour guide for today. I’m pleased to meet your acquaintance, madam.”
I laughed at him and he sneered at me.
“But before we start our tour let me just set a few rules. One, stay by my side to avoid getting lost.” He winked at me and I narrowed my eyes at him. “Second, don’t look away—just me. And lastly, don’t leave me.”
“Despicable kind of rules.” I frowned at him as I crossed my arms.
“Shall we begin, madam?”
“Since you’re my official tour guide appointed on the spot by yourself, how will you brag about this place?”
“Well,” he scratched his temple. “As a tourist attraction, it’s ancient history; as a place to live in, awesome; as a prison—hell no. Since a lot of prisoners lost their heads here.”
I giggled. “Then shall we get inside?”
He stiffened like an ice statue. “Cannot be.”
My eyebrows creased with irritation. “Why is and why not?”
“This is an on-coach tour. No drop offs.”
I huffed. “We’re not on a bus.”
He sighed in surrender. “There are just some things I don’t want to see inside.”
“Like what?”
“Ah… Queen Anne Boleyn wandering the grounds without her head?”
“Oooh! I wanna see that!” I clapped my hands.
“Oh—please no.”
“But it’s a tourist attraction.” I whined.
“It’s not, Anna. It’s the Final Destination.”
I pouted my lips at him. “Please, Dom.” I made the cutest puppy face that I could. “For me?”
“No. Bad Anna. Stay.” He patted my head like I’m a dog and I frowned at him.
“Why? What are you so afraid of?”
He took both of my arms and moved me right next to him. “Stay right here, by my side. So that I can keep you.”
I simpered at him. “You’re way too emotional. You know you can keep me and I will let you. But I can’t stay.”
“I know, Anna. But contacting beyond the grave is so not cool.”
I sighed. “Fine. So you’re not really coming in?”
He raised his head up high and proud. “Not by the hair of my chiny-chin-chin.”
“Okay.” I said as I head straight in.
“Anna, wait!” he shouted at me as I ran my way in.

The Tower of London was really a great place although it’s not good for a hiding place. Dominic sure was serious about his rants earlier. He was so stiff that I had to pull him around to keep him walking. I was just disappointed because I didn’t get to see the headless queen wandering around the grounds.
“Maybe I should haunt you someday.” I teased him when we finally got out of the building. “Would you be scared?”
“No. I’d be petrified.” He answered. “But then maybe I’d cry like a baby.”
“Because you’re scared.” I giggled.
“No. Because I can’t hold you anymore.”
That sent the theatre curtains down my mood. My heart ached in different kinds of places. I don’t know if I’ll be able to become a ghost someday. Maybe I’ll reincarnate? Or maybe not.
We spent the next couple of hours wondering around where the path would take us. It would be just another day going by. Another day to remember. Another day to count. I don’t know how far this path will lead us. I don’t know how many memories my head could still store. I don’t know how many will I remember.
The path still stretched farther than we thought. Our feet had gone tired and we stopped at the park. We waited for the sky to go dark and stars came out from their hiding place.
“A sad soul can kill faster than a germ.” Dominic said.
I smiled. “Where’d you get that?”
“The Walking Dead.”
My eyebrows creased. “I thought you hated contacting the dead.”
He snickered. “It’s a TV series.”
“Oh. Shoot.” I bit my lower lip as he chuckled.
I elbowed him so he’d stop laughing.
“When you look at the sky can you see the lines?” I asked and he frowned.
“What lines?”
“Lines that connect each star in the sky.”
“I think they’re obscured.”
I laughed. “I’ll tell you something.”
He smirked at me. “Go ahead.”
“I realized that there are three aligning stars to you.”
We both looked up the sky.
I heard his soft laugh. “It’s Orion’s arrow.”
“Yes.” I said. “And it’s directing me to you.” I giggled as I leaped three spaces towards him. He caught me right away and he trapped me in the circle of his arms.
“They are massively beautiful like they’re designed to remind people that even the smallest of things can make a difference—can light up the entire sky.” I leaned my head to his.
“Did you know that the constellations aren’t fixed in the sky?” he said. “The star arrangement that makes up each one would look different from another location in the universe. That’s why when you connect the dots to make the Ursa Major, the Big Dipper disappears.”
I tilted my head to the side to check his point.
“So you’re saying that people are under the same sky but ironically speaking they aren’t?” I asked. “If that’s your theory then two people from different places can never see the same rainbow.”
He made an arc with his lips as he nodded. “But still they’re under the same sky.”
“But with a different time line.” I countered.
I let out a deep breath. “I wonder if people, when they die, get to see the same sky with the living.”
“Do you know how awfully awkward it is to be happy without you?”
I scoffed at him. “Believe it or not there is somebody out there hoping to meet someone like you.”
“But then she won’t be you.”
“Dom, we are all made in a very unique way. We may share the same qualities with other people but there can only be one you and one me. Sometimes people come into our life just to teach you how to let go.”
He groaned. “Stop it, Anna. It’s not yet the end.”
“I know. I just want you to open your eyes to the realities around you.”
He looked so fragile as he turned to me. “The world’s gonna be different.”
“Well, it’s not always the same every day.”
“From which clouds have we fallen to meet here?” he frowned at the sky.
I chuckled. “It’s the same old story that makes people come back to the same place.”
He smiled at me. “Will you allow me to be corny?”
I wrinkled my nose at him. “You’re always corny.”
He hugged me tighter. “If love is an ocean, I’ll drown myself just to get to you. If love is the wind, I’ll learn how to fly to see you. And if it’s true that all roads lead to Heaven when we die, I’ll be good so that my path would lead me down to you.”
I wiped my hand across his face and he stole a quick kiss on my palm.
“I’m sure not all guys are like you. Somebody’s ought to be looking for you.”
He kissed the back of my ear. “Sorry. I’m already taken.”
I shook my head in amazement.
“Anna,”
“Yep?”
“Please don’t forget my concert this Friday.” He leaned his chin on my shoulder. “I want you to be there.”
It fascinated me to realize that when you’re in love, you see things differently. You see the light and happiness on everything no matter how sad it is. Maybe that’s the reason why it’s hard to let go. Because when you drown yourself from that kind of love and happiness, you don’t know how to come back the surface.
I smiled back at him. “I will.”
