A/N: Next chapter, next song! These songs are ones I'm currently... obsessing over. Yeah, I obsess over music. Don't judge me. First is It's Been So Long by Living Tombstones- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gk-aCL6eyGc
And next is Little Brother by Now, Now Every Children- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eU_xPEB_FWE
Anyway, enjoy, my lovelies! Feel free to leave a comment and I'll try to continue this when I have a chance!
Flair sat at the circular oak table and laughed as the medic, Tashia, shuffled a deck of cards with her slender fingers.
“So we’re playing Spit? I can totally beat you at that,” Tash said, flashing a quick smile at her before dealing them. Flair caught them and arranged them in stacks and rows, flipping the top cards of each pile up. Tash split the cards up into two piles and flipped both top cards. Flair glanced at them both, then smiled slightly.
“Ready? Go,” she said, then her hands moved quickly to the cards, placing them in ascending order. Flair froze, the feeling of eyes on her sending a shiver down her spine. She glanced behind her while stopping Tash by holding her metal hand up. Tash froze and set the card back on her pile. She raised her eyes.
“Ooh, who is he? He’s a pretty one,” Tash whispered, hiding a smile behind her pale hand. Her wavy blonde hair fell into her brownish grey eyes.
“What’re you two doing?” asked Kane. He pulled a chair out and turned it around, then straddled it and allowed his arms to rest loosely on the back.
“Playing cards! Do you want to join?” Tash asked, smiling sweetly. Flair was already swiping the cards into one pile with a flick of her wrist and shuffling them.
“We’ll play King’s Corner if you’d like to join,” she said.
“It’s probably a bad idea for me to join. I tend to have an unfair advantage when it comes to games of odds and chances,” he replied smoothly.
“Playing against me ought to level the playing ground,” she replied, just as smoothly as he had. Kane smirked and leaned his chin on his palm, regarding Flair for a moment.
“I actually came down to see if you had anything to eat,” he said after a pause. Flair stood and crossed the room. Standing on tiptoes, she opened a cupboard and pulled out a box. Opening it, she pulled out a box of pasta and a few tomatoes.
“It’s about dinnertime anyway. Tash, can you get Rynn to come down? She’s so much better at cooking than I am. And get Langdon too,” she said. Tash nodded and spun around, walking out of the room. A moment later the two of them heard her voice shouting for Rynn and Langdon to come down. Flair sighed and shook her head.
“Tash is her name, right? She’s… interesting,” Kane mused. “So are… Rynn and Langdon part of your crew as well?”
“Yeah. Well Rynna is my twin sister. Langdon… well he’s just a permanent resident here… He helps us though,” she replied, grabbing a pot and a jug of olive oil.
“I’m here! What do you want me to do?” Rynn asked, sliding along the floor. She looked a lot like Flair, but different at the same time. They had similar colored light brown hair that fell in waves around their faces, sharp jawlines, and eyes that seemed to contain every eye color at once. But Rynn seemed to smile more and talk more as well. She stood straighter and seemed more comfortable around others. Flair was often closed off and quiet around people unless they were nagging her.
“I was just about to make dinner, but since I can’t cook anything except maybe a croque monsieur, I figured you would do a much better job than I would,” she responded, biting her lip to hide a smile.
“Of course I can cook better than you! If a trained chimp were onboard, it could cook better than you,” Rynn said. She reached for the pot in Kane’s hand. “So who’re you? And what’s your story?”
“I’m Kane. It’s… nice to meet you. And I don’t really have an interesting story. Or any story at all,” he said, handing her a wooden spoon. As she stirred the tomato sauce she shook her head.
“I disagree. Everyone has a story to tell, they just have to remember it. I can’t remember my old stories, but since I started travelling with Flair, this has been my story. Maybe if you stay long enough, it can be part of yours too. It’s more exciting than it seems,” she said. Flair went back to the table and regarded her sister.
“That was some seriously deep crap you just said,” she muttered.
“Well I am the smarter of the two of us,” Rynn replied, flashing a quick grin. Flair laughed and turned towards the door where Langdon was leaning against the frame.
“Such a touching sisterly-bonding moment. I’m almost sorry I interrupted. What’re we having tonight?” he asked, moving away from the door frame and sitting on the counter, watching Rynn cook. His blond hair was sticking up at odd angles and he had a smirk on his face.
“I’m making pasta and tomato sauce. Get off the counter before I throw you out an air lock,” Rynn replied.
“You wouldn’t do that to a charming gentleman such as myself. You’d be to guilty afterwards. Ah and Flair, why aren’t you in the kitchen too? Since that’s where girls should be,” he teased.
“She wouldn’t suffer too much guilt if it happened. I guarantee that she would maybe even be relieved. After all, we could finally have a bit of quiet around here,” Flair shot back, a teasing tone in her voice layered with a hardness that bordered on anger.
“Alright, got it. No insulting the captain or her pretty sister,” Langdon said, raising his hands in mock surrender. He smiled. “I really am sorry though. I have to restrain myself from teasing you. You’re just so… gullible.”
“Oh, shut up,” she snapped. Langdon smiled and laughed, dodging the napkin she threw at him.
“By the way, who’s the new guy?” Langdon asked.
“I’m Kane Wyghtham,” he said yet again. Flair glanced at him and shook her head.
“At least this is everyone. You don’t have to introduce yourself anymore,” she said, smirking. He snorted and rolled his eyes.
“I quite like saying my name. It flows off the tongue,” he responded. Flair ducked her head to hide yet another smile. She felt she was smiling far too much since this stranger had boarded her ship. It was odd… but pleasant.
A/N: Annndd I've got the second chapter done! I'm afraid not much happened at all in this. I wrote it at two in the morning, so don't judge too much! Anyway, I just wanted to introduce the rest of the characters before getting into the actual plot. Hope you all enjoyed, even though it's a bit of a filler!
Hugs to you lovelies!
