“When I was ten, I was taken from my home by The Ministry. They put me in the program directed by the Institute. I met a boy named Silas. That’s also where I met Forest. Forest was the person with Langdon’s job before… before he died,” Flair paused, gathering herself. It still hurt to speak about Forest. He’d helped her whenever she’d wanted to give up at the Institute. He helped her escape and they’d taken the ship that she’d programmed. It had been three years ago that he’d been killed by a Ministry agent. They’d both been wanted since they possessed top secret information on the training that the soldiers were put through. That they were put through. She cleared her throat and continued.
“Silas was one of my closest friends along with Forest. Silas was taken by the Alchemy division of the Institute to be trained about a year after I met him. Forest and I were both put into the Mechanic division though, so we were able to still see each other. We were supposed to make military grade shuttles and warships. Anyway, the last time I saw Silas was when he was twelve and I was eleven. I probably wouldn’t recognize him if I saw him again. He’d be… seventeen now. But he was quite good to the orphans especially. Both of my parents died when I was little, so my sister and I were taken in by our aunt and uncle. After Silas left, we ended up planning to escape. We carried the plan out when we were 14. He died soon after,” Flair said. She stood up and smoothed her sweaty palms across her jeans. “Let’s go to the kitchen. My mouth is dry from all this talking.” Kane followed her out of the room, and she turned and shut the door behind her. She walked to the kitchen and opened a cupboard, grabbing a glass and grabbing a bottle of ginger ale. Opening the cap, she took a sip and then began her story again.
“Where was I? Ah, yes. Forest. Right. Well, I ended up going back to my home and finding Rynn. I didn’t actually go to the house. I went into town and stumbled upon her. We started travelling together and when we got to a small desert planet, we met Tash. She joined us. Said she wanted adventure… well she sure got adventure, alright,” Flair snorted. Kane smiled. He had settled into one of the chairs and was watching her. His face was cupped in one of his palms.
“So, what do you do on this ship?” he asked.
“Mmm, well, we do many things. Mainly transporting cargo and passengers. I fly under the radar, so I occasionally help with smuggling, but only things that are needed. I probably shouldn’t tell you that,” Flair laughed. “Anyway, we picked up Langdon on one of our cargo jobs. It’s the job that got my arm crushed. We got a few shots in too, however. Rynn took out Faith’s eye. Oh, Faith was the person we were supposed to be trading with. She didn’t hold up her end of the deal. Smuggled in automatons, programmed them attack us.Langdon was angry that Faith didn’t keep her promise, so he left and asked to join us. He offered to fill Forest’s position. Tash amputated my arm, and I did the mechanics for the arm when I was able to stay conscious for long enough to actually work. It’s platinum and stainless steel, so it won’t rust or bend. So, that basically gives you the whole story. I guess that’s me.”
“I doubt that everything you just told me is your entire story,” Kane said. He fiddled with the cap of her ginger ale.
“Well, I guess not. I mean, I can’t put my personality into words, and I can’t tell the future… So what about you? What’s your story?” Flair asked.
“Hm… well it’s a bit like yours actually. I was lost, but I think I’ve found what I’m looking for,” Kane said. Flair opened her mouth to voice her confusion, but he held up a hand. “I’ll start from the beginning. I’ve met you before. I was at the Institute when you were there. Silas… well… he’s my brother.”
A/N: Mwahahaha cliff-hanger. Ahem... Anyway, I've been working on another chapter, but I'm still trying to post all of Fall into Silence onto Fictionpress, so it might take a little while. I also have a wedding and graduation party to attend this weekend, as well as studying for finals... So be patient! These chapters are a lot shorter than my usual chapters (sorry) but I've been so busy that I haven't had much time to write. I'll hopefully explain even more in this next chapter, and it will also hopefully be longer. This might not have as much success as FiS, but I'm still hoping to have at least one person that enjoys this as much as I do. I love writing Steampunk, even though I might not be very good at it... So, I hope at least one person is enjoying this. I'm writing this in my free time between school and trying to write a sequel to FiS.
Speaking of which: I am utterly stumped on the sequel right now, and I usually allow my mother and closest friends to evaluate my work before I post it. Thanks for being patient with me! You lovelies are great! Hugs to all of you!
Merci beaucoup mes beaux amis! (Translates to thank you very much my lovely friends. Roughly... I'm still learning, don't judge!)
