“Ready to see how Faith will take us showing up with some cargo?” Rynn asked Flair nervously.
“Langdon will be up in the cliffs the entire time covering us, so we’ll be fine,” she responded, switching to her “captain” voice, as Tash had so eloquently dubbed it. “Also, I said it before and I’ll say it again, that’s in the past.”
“You talking about business?” Kane asked, sitting down at the counter that Flair and Rynn were leaning against.
“None of your business,” Flair said as Rynn responded with “yes and you should run far far away.” Flair glared at her and she shrugged sheepishly.
“And why should I run away? I’m fairly capable of handling myself,” he said with a small smile.
“This isn’t just a trade or something that you do everyday. It’s dangerous. Which is why you should stay out of this, Kane,” Flair hissed through gritted teeth. He raised an eyebrow and stayed silent.
“That sounded kind of sharp, sis,” Rynn mumbled, then ducked her head away from Flair’s glare. When Flair turned away Rynn quickly mouthed “sorry” to him before following her out. Kane waved off the apology and smiled comfortingly. Rynn smiled back gratefully and followed Flair out of the room. The metal door slid shut behind them just as Kane sagged back in his chair and sighed, running and hand through his hair.
***********
“Who put the stick up your ass?” Rynn asked, annoyed.
“Kane hid his own identity from me! He should’ve said that he knew Silas! And I don’t want my only connection to Silas dying over something as stupid as a freaking job,” she shouted rather abruptly. Rynn jerked her head back and then tilted her head in sympathy.
“I know you adored Silas, but he’s gone… Kane isn’t Silas. You have to accept that Silas isn’t coming back and that Kane is not a replacement,” she whispered, gently placing a hand on her sister’s shoulder. Flair bit her lip and shook her head, blinking back tears.
“I know, it’s just… oh I don’t know. Ugh now I’m crying. I’m not supposed to be the emotional one,” she croaked, trying to laugh and instead sobbing. “Sorry. I, uh, I’m just going to grab some gear for our trade with Faith. Better safe than sorry. Uh, can you apologize to Kane for me? I was kind of snippy.”
“Of course,” Rynn replied, not bothering to mention the fact that she already had technically apologized. Flair nodded and wiped her eyes and then pointed awkwardly at the door.
“Tell Kane he can tag along if he wants. I’m going to grab a few things,” she said. Rynn brushed a piece of the hair that was the same color as her own away from her sister’s face and then smiled at her.
“I will. Now go on,” she said. Flair nodded and rushed out of the room, obviously uncomfortable with the emotional exposure. Rynn shook her head and entered the room where Kane was still sitting in the chair. His hair seemed ruffled.
“Oh, Rynn. Hey,” he muttered half-heartedly. “Is Flair throwing me off at the next stop due to her hatred for me?”
“She doesn’t hate you! Oh, sweetie, she cares too much. Well, it might not seem like it, but she really does. She said you can come with us on this cargo drop if you’d like. It’s just… drops like this, especially when dealing with Faith, are really dangerous,” she explained. She tucked a piece of hair behind her hair nervously. He nodded in understanding and then snorted in derision.
“Flair needs to figure out that I can take care of myself. I’m a big boy,” he said sarcastically. Rynn laughed lightly and covered her mouth.
“To be fair, she treats everyone that way,” she said, giggling. “She used to mother me when we were younger. She still does sometimes.” Kane shook his head and laughed with her.
“That’s surprisingly adorable. So even if she shows no emotion, she really cares. That’s sweet,” he said. He smiled and Rynn examined his expression.
“You like her, don’t you?” she blurted after a hesitation. His cheeks flushed and she grinned and clapped her hands together in delight. “Oh, you so do!”
“Wha… no… what are you talking about? I do not… oh shut up,” he stuttered. She threw her arm around his shoulder casually.
“You so like her. Well why don’t you tell her. Oh wait… you know what, disregard what I just said,” she said.
“Hey, you two. What are you talking about?” a familiar voice asked.
“N-nothing,” Kane blurted quickly, blushing darkly and staring at his hands. Rynn hid another smile.
“We were talking about you actually. Kane says he’ll come with for the drop,” she said. Flair nodded and fixed her attention on the holsters that held two small pistols. She fastened the buckles that held the guns in place as she began to speak.
“Rynn, you should get Tash and Langdon down here. I’ll brief Kane since it’s his first time here,” she said. Rynn nodded and stood up. As she stepped out the door, she flashed Kane a quick thumbs-up and smiled. He blushed an even deeper shade of red and she stifled a laugh. She spun on her heel and set out to find Tashia and Langdon.
“So, Kane, first thing you need to know is that you should never interrupt a deal. I do the talking in these situations. Secondly, always have arms with you. Just in case things go wrong. Thirdly, always have back-up and cover. Langdon is both of those. He’s a bit obsessed with explosives and large guns… basically anything destructive. Fourth, stay close to the rest of us,” she said, her voice accented with a tone of authority. He nodded, eyes wide. He almost looked a bit scared. She cracked a smile and then nodded sharply. “Good. Looks like you’ve got it. Just… don’t get killed.”
“Yes s--I mean ma’am! I’ll try my best!” he barked as if she were a drill sergeant. Flair grinned and placed a hand on his shoulder. “I… ah… Flair?”
“Mmm?”
“Sorry if this comes of as weird, but do you think of me as Silas’s brother? Or do you see me as an entirely different person?”
“I… oh, Kane, I’m sorry. Rynn probably said some things… I do kind of think of you as Silas’s brother, that’s true, but I know you’re an individual person. You’re kind of similar to him in some ways though. You’re kind… and you try to help whenever you can, you try to follow people’s orders even when they probably shouldn’t be giving them sometimes…” Flair trailed off, turning her head away from him and swallowing hard. He hesitated, unsure of what to do.
“It… it was just a question. Rynn didn’t say anything to me. I just felt like you were comparing me to Silas. And I know that I’m not as good as him, and probably never will be, but I just wanted to know how you felt…” Kane mumbled awkwardly. She shook her head, wiped her eyes, then rather abruptly put a finger to his lips.
“Just shut up. I’m a horrible person, I judge people based on their past and take people for granted. I completely lost it when you tried to offer your help… I am so sorry…”
“I should be the one apologizing. I made you uncomfortable and I basically hid my past from you. I overstepped my boundaries. I’m the one who should be sorry.”
“No… no you just wanted me to help you. The only way I would help is if I didn’t know you were related to Silas. It’s my fault that you had to hide those things. I have serious issues. You can’t blame yourself for my issues,” she replied, on the verge of tears.
“I’m the one that’s making you cry right now! It’s my place to take the blame for all of this,” he said. She laughed and wiped her eyes with the back of a hand.
“Well… this was not what I was expecting when I came in here,” Langdon interrupted.
“Ah, crap. Uh, yeah, hello. Do you have your weapons and ammo?” Flair said quickly. She stood up and smoothed her hair back. Kane cleared his throat and stood up too. Langdon raised an eyebrow and nodded.
“Are we ready to go?” Tash asked. Flair nodded and cleared her throat.
“Everyone clear on the plan? Stick together, get the trade done, and if Faith makes a move, attack,” she ordered.
“Yes, captain,” Tash responded. Langdon nodded sharply and Kane nodded hesitantly.
“I guess…” Rynn replied uneasily. Flair glanced at her and Rynn shrugged weakly.
“It’ll be okay. We’ll get this done then be out quick, alright?” Flair said. Rynn nodded. Flair offered her hand and Rynn took it, squeezing it for reassurance. “It’ll be fine. We’ve got back-up and I’ll be right here. She won’t get to you.”
**********
The group walked across the cracked, parched ground. They saw three figures standing about 30 yards away. Flair approached them warily.
“Flair… it’s… well, I was going to say it’s good to see you, but it isn’t overly good. Oh, I see you brought your homicidal psychopath of a sister along with you. And I’m guessing Langdon’s up in the cliffs. And Tash is by your side, as always. But who’s this pretty piece of man-cake?” a young woman with an eyepatch said to her. Flair stiffened and straightened her spine.
“We’re not here on a social call, Faith. We have cargo for you if you’re willing to trade for some medical supplies,” she snapped.
“And what are the goods?” Faith replied.
“It’s two cases of sanitization kits, and three of meal packs. The three cases of meal packs could feed a hundred families for two months at least,” she said. Faith nodded.
“I can trade those for two cases of medical supplies and enough oil for your ship to last three months if you fly non-stop,” she said. Flair gestured at Tash to pull the cases toward Faith. She complied and then flipped the clasps open, revealing the goods that were neatly packed inside. Faith bent down to examine them and then nodded her head.
“Come back to camp and we’ll get you your payment,” Faith said. Flair shook her head and clenched her jaw stubbornly.
“Bring the cases here. We’ll wait. Tash will come with and if you try to pull anything she’ll shoot your other eye out,” she replied. Faith rolled her eyes and nodded.
“Fine. We’ll do it your way,” she said. Flair nodded and Faith turned around and began walking toward her main camp on Myrrir. Then she rather abruptly spun around and pulled a gun from the waistband of her pants and aimed it at Flair.
“Well… that was a bit expected, hon,” she said in a bored tone. The popping noises of bullets cut through the air and the two men that were flanking Faith moments before collapsed to the ground, neat holes going straight through their foreheads. Flair crossed her arms and smirked at her.
“Well damn…” Faith muttered.
“Like I said before, I think we’ll do this my way,” Flair responded.
“Follow me. I can’t carry all of this myself, so I’ll need you to help,” she replied, sigh exasperatedly. Flair shrugged and gestured for the others to follow her. Tash and Kane grabbed the cases and Langdon landed in a crouched position from the spot in the cliffs where he had been hiding. They trooped after Faith, Flair in front, Rynn right behind her, followed by Kane and Tashia. Langdon brought up the rear.
**********
“Here are your medical supplies. Now for the other stuff?” Faith muttered begrudgingly. Flair glanced at Tash and Kane and they set the cases down in front of Faith.
“I might not like you as a person, but I respect your ability to keep your crew in line,” Faith said. Flair half-smiled and offered a hand. Faith shook it and then whistled at two men, who then hurried over to help her with the cases of supplies.
“Let’s get out of this place,” Flair muttered. Rynn nodded enthusiastically and the group turned and began to make their way back to the Bird of Prey.
