Western Society in America how long been seen Progressive and advanced civilizations. through the use of integration and advancements in Freedom of Speech, Social Justice, and Social Action in the American education system where's the society can prevent ourselves from hitting a wall. Pulling from the sources of The Next Kind Of Integration by Emily bazelon America's Oh sh*t Moment: How American Civilization Can Avoid Collapse by Niall Ferguson, Using The Women's March To Examine Freedom Of Speech, Social Justice, And Social Action Through Information Literacy by Deborah Levitov this paper will examine why societies like the us may be heading toward a decline, and begin to show how being mindful of social justice can help to keep the united states from declining or even collapsing.
In The Next Kind of Integration Emily Bazelon quotes Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy saying a “...Court's ruling “should not prevent school districts from continuing the important work of bringing together students of different racial ethnic and economic backgrounds” (15) through this kind of the statement we see that the Supreme Court Justice is likely advocating for integration of school systems this is one form of social justice that can lead to advancement within the schools. By integrating schools, not only racially but in a socio-economic way, friendly competition between new students and students with greater amounts of diversity these people are more likely to both work together and compete with each other. in fact, in America's Oh Sh*T Moment: How American Civilization Can Avoid Collapse Niall Ferguson lists six “killer applications” that made Western Society what it is today. The first of these killer apps is called competition Ferguson can be quoted saying “1. Competition. Europe was politically fragmented into multiple monarchies and republics which would in turn internally divided into competing corporate entities among them the ancestors of modern corporations.” (50) Ferguson draws a direct link between competition and the advancement of American society. increase in diversity and integration in our school system we will increase competition between students Increase in competition between students will also serve to increase work ethic killer app number 6. Niall Ferguson can once more be quoted saying “6. The Work Ethic. westerners were the first people in the world to come by more extensive and intensive labor with higher savings rates for accumulation.” (51) By giving this definition of work ethic Ferguson asserts that, overall, the people who are working will have an increase in income this will help to improve the socioeconomic status of many of the children written about in the next kind of integration, one of the main points in the article focuses on the integration children of lower income into higher income schools (18).
Schools are not the only environment that can benefit from the use of integration to reactivate the “Killer apps”. “Social justice "is the fair and just relation between the individual and society. This is measured by the explicit and tacit terms for the distribution of wealth, opportunities for personal activity, and so- cial privileges" ("Social Justice," 2017).” (Women’s 1) social justice focuses on the use of action to increase equalization between groups of people. This plays directly into both integration and work ethic.in the article Using the Women's March to Examine Freedom of Speech, Social Justice, And Social Action Through Information Literacy by Deborah Levitov states “Although the majority of marchers were women, the march involved people of every age, sex, gender, and ethnicity. It was not just a march by or for women alone.” This is showing a collaboration of different groups and an integration in a social setting in addition it is also a direct link to Fergusons third killer app, the rule of law and reprehensive government (50). Through the peaceful protest of the women’s march we are able to see the role of citizens in representative government.
By looking at the articles The Next Kind Of Integration by Emily bazelon America's Oh sh*t Moment: How American Civilization Can Avoid Collapse by Niall Ferguson, Using The Women's March To Examine Freedom Of Speech, Social Justice, And Social Action Through Information Literacy by Deborah Levitov is is easy to see that though societies such as the united states may be heading toward a decline, if the citizens and governments can begin to be mindful of social justice issues and re activate their own killer applications of competition and work ethic through integration theses societies can keep themselves form declining farther and actually move away from decline entirely and move into a new era of advancement.
