In 1898 in Borsa, Romania Angelus raped and murdered the favorite daughter of the tribe of gypsies, the Kalderash clan, who Darla kidnapped and gave to Angelus as a “Birthday present.” To avenge her death, the Kalderash cursed him by restoring his human soul, thus afflicting him with a conscience and condemning him to an eternity of remorse for the crimes he had committed as Angelus. Bedraggled and dirty, looking like a beggar, he attacked and tried to feed on a women, but was unable to.
When he returned to Darla with a soul and she sensed it, she turned from him in fear, shame, and guilt. So, all on his own, Angelus arrived in the United States and soon changed his name to Angel.
In the early and mid-1900’s, he began to help others while staying in dark alleys, only being seen when he did good deeds.
In 1996, Angel was sought out by a demon, Whistler, who looked human. He persuaded Angel to join the fight against evil and help Buffy Anne Summers, the Sunnydale Vampire Slayer. Angel agreed and protected her without her knowing from the time she lived in Los Angeles as the brand new Slayer, to the time she went to live in Sunnydale.
