The victim was a woman named Carrie McGuire. She was a stout woman of short stature (I’d say her height was roughly five-five and put her weight at around sixty kilos). She hadn’t been discovered by Rachel on her own as I had previously thought. She had been discovered jointly by Rachel and four others.
Here’s what Rachel had said:
“I came to this room at eleven in the morning. I’m used to seeing messy rooms; I was quite surprised to find the room quite tidy. Anyways, I heard the shower running in the bathroom. I was confused because I’m usually assigned rooms that have been checked out. So, I knocked on the bathroom door but nobody answered. I went downstairs to the reception and confirmed that the room had indeed been checked out by the guest.
“I came back up and found that the shower was still running. I knocked again but there was still no answer. So, I radioed my team’s supervisor. He came and basically knocked as I had, receiving no answer. He radioed the hotel manager – poor guy had just finished a twelve hour shift and was about to go home – who came in and tried to open the door with his key. There was something jammed in the keyhole so that was of no use. After a lengthy discussion and permission from the hotel owner, they decided to break down the door.
“I stood at the side while they proceeded to try and knock the door down. It’s a thick door so it took three kicks to crack the door near the handle and another four to break it open.
“When we entered, we found the girl –what was her name? Carrie? Yeah, we found Carrie’s body inside the shower cubicle. A hot shower was running, constantly giving off steam. The shower glass was completely foggy. The hotel manager opened the shower glass and took a pulse. He declared her dead and asked the supervisor to call the police. It was then that I called you Peter.”
Rachel took a deep breath after finishing her story.
“Thank you Rachel,” Adrian said. “That must have been quite harrowing for you, seeing a dead woman like that.”
“It was. I didn’t see the body that much in detail because of the fogged up glass so it’s not as bad. Still, I don’t think I will be sleeping easy tonight,” she said with a weak smile.
“You should go home and rest,” I said.”I heard your supervisor telling you that you could take a day off tomorrow.”
“Yeah. Even if he hadn’t given me a holiday, I wasn’t going to come in tomorrow.”
With that, she excused herself and left. A few moments later, Adrian and I were in Carrie’s room. It was a small room, with a double bed in the middle. A big LED TV was mounted on the wall directly opposite the bed. On one end of the room was a huge cupboard. At the other end was the bathroom door with a chair standing in the corner. There was a small table with a telephone and a lamp on the side of the bed facing the bathroom door. The other table that was supposed to be on the other side of the bed was standing in front of the only window in the room with a wine bottle and a half filled wine glass on it. There was a chair next to the table.
“Rachel said she didn’t work on the room, yeah?” Adrian asked.
“Yup. And it’s clean as she said.”
“Our murderer really knows how to clean a room, eh? What do you think Peter?”
“What do I think?”
“Yeah. What’s your theory?”
“Theory? We just entered this room. We haven’t even gone to the bathroom and seen the crime scene. It’s a little too early for a theory,” I said.
“Not for me,” Adrian said with a slight smile and proceeded to the bathroom door.
I knew that smile of his. “You’re not going to tell me are you?”
“Not yet,” he replied. “I still need to know a few things.”915Please respect copyright.PENANAqQeYSkt8Kp
