A lady in a police uniform interrogated me in one of the rooms at the station. She had a tag on her left breast that read “Dahlia Demetriou”. Her head was covered by the folder with my name in all caps sticked on the front cover.
”Alice...Cirillo... am I correct?”
The woman gently put the folder down and looked at me with her green eyes. Somehow they made me feel safe around her, so unlike all my other interrogations, I decided to answer.
”Yes ma’am.” I said, staring back at her.
”Your mother abandoned you, and you are all alone, am I correct?”
”Erm, yes ma’am.”
”You have nine records of theft and attempted theft, but only seven people charged you... am I correct?”
”Yes ma’am.”
”This is your tenth time... being caught... am I correct?”
”Yes ma’am”
”Tell me, Alice, how many people have you stolen from?”
”I don’t know, ma’am.”
She maintained eye contact with me for three seconds, then she looked back at the file and wrote something.
I tried to see what she wrote but she closed the file immediately.
”Well then, the chief has issued this for you and specifically you. Instead of being sent to jail again, you will be sent to a boarding school east from here, where you will be rehabilitated to become a proper woman.”
”Yes ma’am”
Wait, what?
