A familiar, screeching, inhumane sound split through the air. The animals that'd been here ever since, began to panic. Aris could see it all too well; the Walls weren't shutting down for the night, even they could sense the emergence of danger. Harriet stepped beside him. "This is why I was highly suspicious of you the first place," she said.
Aris felt like he was in two states of panic---one of fear what might occur to the Icers, the other being offered to the Shades. "It's not my fault," he responded defensively.
"Relax." Harriet chuckled. "I'm not going to offer a sacrifice to you. Instead, we all know what the stakes are. They're going to hunt down each and every one of us. I need you to assist in something. Fetch all the maps from that Igloo, and set them under the ground. Use the instructions on the sheet you will see in the huts."
Aris nodded and scurried off. People were already pawing through the ground with shovels, attempting to get a way inside. It would not matter now, day or night, the Shades would hunt them down. He reached the Map Igloo, feeling odd. It feels like...the end of the world. But I'm not petrified. I'm going to keep the girls all alive.
He discovered the maps all in the trunk. Icers were pawing through the ground with shovels, scooping up the snow and designing underground homes for them already. Dragging the trunk out, he sped for the kitchen, where he snatched every supply, reached a space, tugged at the handle attached to the snow, and trudged down into the underground rooms
They had already dragged in some of the furniture into the underground home, tables and chairs. Instead of huts, there were tents, with sleeping bags that had been set up around the room. He shoved the Maps in and began carving out shelves. Rachel spoke to him in his mind at that time
So, that might be why two Walls had rearranged themselves at the first time. That should've been our first clue.
Yep. He felt his head throbbing, as he completed the last shelf for storing food. He hurried back up, helping out the Icers by summoning every one,. He collected backpacks, along with a plastic sheet, as instructed and when he reached the bottom ladder, he rummaged listlessly through his backpack, discovering water bags and bottles, food, and medical supplies, and studied the sheet.
1. Ensure that everyone has at least a bag of food, water, an earpiece, and other disposable items
2. Make sure everyone is accounted for. The names are listed here: Rachel, Aris, Sonya, and Miyako.
3. Await further instructions from Leader Harriet.
Aris almost snickered at the name, but he didn't, and his mind even wondered how they recieved the earpiece Instead, he watched as they descended down one by one. He settled into the sleeping bag, waiting for the night to begin. He had no idea how Harriet did it, but she seemed to be risking her life out here, announcing who had died.
The first Shade thrust itself upon the roof, growling viciously as it did. The second one was even more powerful, he could've swore some of the splintered. He remained quiet, huddling in the band of girls. He shuffled towards a spot where they'd been going to the bathroom, which stank heavily, but nothing they could do it about it.
"Hurry," Sonya hissed into his ear. "At this point, the code needs to be inspected. It spells, maze, spring, and one of it spells shade, with a few numbers in between."
"Yes," he replied. "I also discovered some that had the term, griever and shade. Must be another vicious creature that lurks inside of the Maze, one we haven't yet discovered. I've memorized most of them, how did you--?" He figured she'd memorized all as well, but that was too much of a coinsidence.
Sonya fished out a notebook out of her pack and handed it to him. "I've scrawled down all of them. Now, we can't venture out in the Maze, I think that's pretty much it. End of discussion," she finally said in a curt tone. "After Harriet deems safe, we'll venture out there."
Harriet's voice crackled through his earpiece. "As far as I'm certain of, the Shades caused destruction to all areas. I think it's better to remain as to where we are. To the shock of several newcomers, those pits were not designed in the hurry. We've figured out the Maze will end, eventually, and began designing those pits."
They're so clever, Aris said softly. Sonya looked at him sharply, but didn't comment on it.
Yes, she said back. They've said they did not design those in a hurry
A girl stepped in, clad in a white lab coat, and then thrust the screen at them. It was Beth. She then fled from the room, as Aris watched the screen in shock and then reappeared, pulling at the strands of hair, shrieking, leaping up and down like a manic.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON? With that, a keyboard burst from the screen.
Numbly, Aris typed in a No.
YOU ARE BEING TESTED! GO FLEE RIGHT NOW! THE SHADES ARE A MISTAKE....GO DO IT! EVERY SINGLE VARIABLE IS STUPID, IT"S ALL OVER!
"What?" Rachel murmured. "Has to be another test."
"Has to be," Aris agreed. With that had been inflicted upon them, he wasn't too shocked anymore.
GO SUBJECT B1! FLEE THE MAZE OR I SEVER YOUR TELEPATHY! WICKED IS GOOD!
Rachel? he murmured. She didn't reply, but at least, he still felt her presence. Whew, he thought.
YOU HAVE TO! THE WORLD IS ENDING, DO SOMETHING< > BOY! NO...........
His insides contracted the sight of Beth. "You! You're not supposed to be here..." With that, more horrific terms burst from the screen. Beth tore at one of the boards, thrusting it away. "You don't even know yourself!" she cried out, tearing at the boards.
END YOUR LIVES!
Beth let out a screeching, never-ending scream, before she vanished, along with the screen. More Shades began sprinting around, crying out. He clapped a hand over his ear, flinching at the stretching sound, as Beth thrust the screen at the wall, shattering into bits and produced another screen.
THE OUTSIDE WORLD THAT AWAITS IS FULL OF VIRUS!
Then, she let out another shriek, similar to the one the Shades had and fled from the room. She continued to scream and flung herself at a Shade. She assaulted herself, jabbing her neck with a knife and sped for the Maze, towards the Shades and allowed it the abduct her.
***
Beth materialized a few times again, shouting strings of insanity, and more terms materialized. Most of them were in black, in bold, that said about something called WICKED and virus, and then, she would lash out violently, before her actions subsided. Finally, a Shade would arrive to abduct and return her.
But then, one of the times, a new creature emerged. Aris gaped and stared at the creature, its spikes rotating continuously. Rachel fired an arrow at it, but then, the ground split open, revealing more of the creatures, seemingly equivalent to the Shades.
Aris tore his gaze, bottled up his fear and looked at the notebook. "Let's do this." He was ready to examine all of these terms. If it was the end of the Maze, they needed to decode everything now.
