Aris drew his knees up to his chest. After Harriet had exited the room, he tortured himself with questionaries. Have I been here before? Is this possible? he thought. His greatest fear was that being shipped here was for a purpose. Why didn't, whoever shipped him here, sent up another girl?
He shook his head, trying to clear his mind. Not until he received an entire tour, would he know he'd been here before. He was so occupied with his thoughts, he almost missed out the whisper that echoed in the tense air.
"Aris."
Rachel was in front of the Cell. He looked up at her, a smile on his face. "Hey," he said softly. She reached through the bars, grasping his hands together. "What are you thinkin' about? You look quite deep in thought." Rachel bit her lip and turned her head away, before averting her gaze back at him.
"Yes, I am," she whispered. "Why did you speak to me in my head?" The query hung in the tense air, unanswered. Aris closed his eyes, wondering what he should say. Memories were beginning to fade--except her and Teresa were still in his mind, remembered by him.
"I've no idea at all." He responded this as earnestly as possible. "I just can. Like I'm born to do that, it's in my brain, somehow." He glanced up at her. "I--I'm sorry I'm here. I've no idea why--"
Rachel shook her head furiously. "Don't apologize, Aris. There has to be something about you. There's a reason you're here, not for cruelty. I'm attempting to convince everyone, every girl, that you may be the key to fleeing the Spring." Aris lifted a brow. "That's what we call the area surrounding the Maze."
A few minutes later, Harriet emerged from the entrance and approached the Cell. "All right, then, Aris. The girls have all agreed, under the Decision Tree, that you may be free in fifteen minutes." She passed a bowl of food through the opening, and Aris wrinkled his nose. A bowl of slimy porridge
After Harriet exited the room, he took a bite of the porridge. Gross. He shoveled it down, not even wanting seconds. Oh, well. At least they were feeding him, rather than letting him become more and more hollow, his build was already too thin for his size, after all. Harriet returned with a minute later, retrieved the bowl, and set off, her keys jingling and shoved him out, commanding Rachel to guide him through the Spring, before hurrying out of the room.
Rachel pointed to the snowed-in ground, clinging to trees, his shoes, rambling on everything and anything as she escorted him. Wait, no--he had boots on. Whoever shipped him here, knew he was going to be a chilly climate. He continued on, striding towards the snowy areas, stepping over the chunky rocks in the snow.
"And those are our cabins. Labeled with numbers." Rachel snapped her head up. "Oh, there's Sonya! Hey, Sonya!" she shouted, striding towards the girl. The girl lifted her head, and a frown furrowed her brows, almost disappointing Aris.
"Sonya, this is Aris, our newest Icer," Rachel told her.
Sonya extended a hand to Aris, which he clasped. "Please to know you today." She smirked. Aris liked her personality straight away. "You know, I'm the one who convinced Harriet to allow you to remain here; otherwise, you would be banished.“
“Thank you," Aris said.
Sonya glanced out at the snowed-in grounds. "We've recieved a typical snowfall today, nothing's out of place. Every day, we get a snowfall. Food arrives in that Box they shipped you in." She pointed to the wooden cube. "It's designed from wood, but...." She shrugged. "Thanks to advanced technology, I suppose." She flashed another beaming smile. "Let's go."
They sauntered across the soft, powdery snow. There were several lumps like rocks were beneath them. Sonya arrived at the brick building, and opened the entrance to it, guided him through the corridor and handed him a plate. Oh, he thought as she positioned food on his plate. Must be a kitchen.
The bread was a golden brown, with ham, lettuce, tomato overflowing the sides. As he chewed, he glanced around the kitchen, as he sat down at a table. It wasn't filthy and old like he assumed, it was just not the best. There were a few tables, chairs surrounding each of them, a granite countertop, a sink, and even a rack for hanging dishes and a few other kitchen supplies.
He devoured the sandwich, chewing on the bread and gulped deeply at the cup of water. Feeling refreshed, he set the vacant plate at the sink and trailed after a waiting Sonya. She led him out of the kitchenette. "All right, now. So, continue from where I left off. The cabins are the quarters over there." She tilted her head towards the logs obscured by cabins. "And now--"
"It's bedtime!" someone called out, disrupting Sonya's voice, effectively cutting off her voice. Soon enough, Aris heard the slamming of doors. He couldn't resist sprinting towards it.
