SUMMER OF FRESHMEN YEAR
"Nik! " I shriek at my guy best friend as he throws me into the lake at his aunt's boyfriend's lakehouse. I hit the water hard and I come up spluttering with an angry look on my face. "Nikolas Riley Rydell! How dare you!" I get out of the water and march over to him and grab his arm in attempt to guide him towards the edge of the dock to pull him in.
" I don't think so, " Nik laughs and scoops me easily. Curse his soccer boy strength. He carries me down the dock to the yard where his family watches is in amusement. I laugh as he throws me down on a picnic blanket and he takes a selfie picture of us with his Polaroid camera which I got him for Christmas the year before.
"You silly goose, " I laugh at him.
"Only for you, " he winks and leans back on his hands smiling at me. "So what do you think of being freshmen?" He asks.
I shrug as if it's no big deal, " No big deal. It's just another year of school. "
"Pigeon," he uses the nickname he gave me and lifts my chin so I look him in the eye, " talk to me. "
"I'm fine. " I tell him.
"Nessie, "
"I'm just nervous. I mean everyone says high school isn't like the movies and I understand that. There's not going to be parading down the hallways and partying and breaking out into tune. But what is real is the end of friendships. " I tell him.
"And you're scared you're going to lose people? "
"Yes! Special people like...Faith and Sofie! "
Nik raises an eyebrow, "Anyone else?"
" And you, Nik. I'm scared to lose you, my little stud muffin. "
He smiles at the nickname I had given him years ago and then sits there in silence. We don't say anything for a few minutes until he digs out his phone and starts looking for something on the screen. Once he finds it he grabs the Bluetooth speaker from the basket next to the blanket and turns it on. I smile knowing what's to come. The soft melody of Taylor Swift's "If This Was a Movie" begins to play. A really sad song from our childhood. It's a good song. I smile and Nik stands up stretching his arm out to me asking for a dance. I obliged and he spins me around and we slow dance.
"Flashback to night when you said to me
Nothing's gonna change, not for me and you
Not before I knew how much I had to lose
Come back, come back, come back to me like
You would, you would if this was a movie"
As cringey as it is, we both love it. It was our special thing, among many other things. Nik, tough, soccer boy Nik, would never admit it to the outside world, but he had a soft side to him where he loved to listen to One Direction and Taylor Swift. Where he loved to dance with his girl best friend and make her feel better.
After we dance to the sad Taylor Swift song, we go inside to help make dinner with his family. Nik's mother is close with her twin sister, Bonnie, who insisted I call her Aunty just like her nephews do. Aunty has one child of her own, a two year old boy with the name Davis whom she had from a previous boyfriend. Aunty ended up dating her current boyfriend Craige after the father of Davis went to jail for attempting to murder his neighbor. Craige is a board member for the organization/business Puma. Craige is wealthy and owns many properties including the lakehouse. He invites Nik and his parents and brother up all the time and because I am practically family, I am invited as well. So, ever since Nik and I got really close which was around fifth grade, I began taking trips to the lake with Nik's family.
After dinner and time with Nik's family, I head to the guest house which is a small cottage about 320 yards away from the house. Nik's family had offered I stay in the big house but I enjoy the smaller guest house which Nik accompanies me in. It is like a little house just for us. It's cute with a nice little porch. It is set up so there's a small kitchen with a little table off to the side. It also has a living room with a huge widescreen tv with a gas fireplace. There's one small bedroom downstairs as well as an adjoining bathroom. The upstairs is a loft. It has a skylight and a big balcony which looks out on the lake. There's a king size bed in the loft along with a dresser and some furniture and a big flat screen tv. Despite there being two bedrooms (one downstairs and the other being the loft), Nik and I always stay together in the loft. We share the king size bed and in rainy days or late at night we watch tv together. We go out on the balcony and look at the lake and watch the stars and look for constellations in the night. We climb on the roof as well. It's like our own mini paradise where it's just me and him. Him and me. Nik and Nessa. Nessa and Nik. I wish it could stay like this forever.
Tonight we play card games and then look out at the stars from the balcony. We crawl under the covers once it gets late and talk until we get too tired to talk anymore. It's perfect. So perfect.
