"The story of my becoming a vampire starts like all stories of this type start," Snicket began, watching as Jake let the others back into Hungary's. "It was a dark night, and I had been in the library that day. As I took my usual route back to the Lost Arms, I spotted a dark shadow. It was trailing behind me. I tried taking a different route, but the shadow was still behind me. By the time I reached the Lost Arms, the shadow was upon me." He paused, waiting for Moxie to finish typing. When she nodded, he continued. "When the shadow fell upon me, I realized that it wasn't a shadow at all, but a person." Snicket watched Jake as he handed everyone cups of hot cocoa. When Jake handed him one, Snicket shook his head. "I can't drink it." At Jake's puzzled expression, he sighed and continued. "The person proceeded to bite me on the neck," He pulled down his collar, revealing the bite mark. It consisted of two puncture wounds. "After biting me, the person sliced her hand open with her own fingernail, bloodying her hand, and shoving her hand into my mouth, so that I consumed some of her blood." Moxie frowned, looking at him. "What happened after that?" She asked. Snicket continued, watching Moxie's fingers move about on her typewriter. "I must've passed out after the encounter with the person because I awoke in my bed in the Lost Arms, with the person standing over me. Her eyes were a deep red, like burning coals. She introduced herself as "The Countess," and she explained that she had turned me and that I was now a vampire." He frowned the fangs that marked him as such jutting from his top lip. "She told me that since she was the vampire that had turned me, she was to be my mentor."
"So, you killed Stew?" Cleo asked, and Snicket nodded. "I did kill Stew," He admitted bluntly. "But I wasn't in control of myself when I killed him." The others looked at him with various expressions of muted fear. "Please don't see me as a monster," Snicket murmured, lowering his head.
