ALEX P.O.V
The way the school system is being run feels like we’re being led by a headless fucken chicken as soon as Headmaster John leaves on his business meetings. An assignment that was supposed to be easy, turned into a shit show.
A student was enrolled, and we were to bring her in. We did that. Now, it’s being said that a new level A student was supposed to be joining this semester. I never got notified, but it wasn’t my problem. I brought Mikeala to headmaster John just like he assigned for us to do. I did that-I mean we did that.
It became my problem when the group received a zero on our assignment. Therefore, I received a zero.
‘Level A student never showed for orientation’was sent to me individually, leaving me no choice to forward to Megan and Rei.
Fucken fantastic.
Catching John in the office has been harder than getting Megan to drop the kiss drama that apparently bombed my reputation. This was all according to Megan who found out about the dramatic scene from the grape vine of students.
“I can’t believe that bitch kissed you! Now everyone is going to think you’re a couple.” Megan cursed, calling Mikeala a bitch for the millionth time as we left the Headmaster’s office.
Rumors were nothing new to me. Hearing the whispers and murmurs from the student body about me was a simple chip over my shoulder. However for some reason, Mikaela felt like a boulder. She didn’t budge on the uniform swap, even though it was painfully obvious. The red jacket looked as if it can swallow her whole. She was petite and slender despite the layers of clothing that hid her true shape. Her lips- not the time for my mind to wander, especially right now.
“So we’re grabbing Mikeala out from the assignment she’s at. Why not just wait until they’re done? ” Rei said rubbing his eye, tired from binging another anime series.
“Because they aren’t safe.” I said simply as if it was obvious. Rei gave me a confused expression. I was expecting for him to ask for further details, but luckily he did not. Megan appeared to be just as lost but she kept her lips tight.
“Megan, any word from Jessie? He was the one leading the group.” I quickly added hoping she can find the location. She didn’t miss a beat before answering, “He didn’t respond, but with the beauty of Apple location and the school system running again, I was able to find an address.”
“Good.” I breathed with relief, knowing that part was out the way. Megan forward the location as Rei let out a loud long yawn.
“Can you stay focus! We can’t screw this up again!” Megan snapped growing frustrated with Rei once again. Rei’s eyebrow furrowed, irritated that he was being chewed out by her constant nagging. Normally I would let them hash it out or mainly scream it out, but this was not the time. Before this fight spilled out, creating an even more delay to our tight schedule, I summoned Vlad finally getting my annoying group members to shut the hell up.
Finally some peace and quiet.
“Vlad take us to the address that Megan sent us.” I stated as Vlad made himself visible, appearing out from the shadows.
Vlad is the only Soul eater known in the school. The students and faculty fear Soul eaters as all beings should. In fact every supernatural creature avoided them even top predators like vampires or werewolves. They are the true essence of monsters and parasites with the soul purpose to indulge in humanity’s suffering. The only positive trait they possess is their limitless power when an unfortunate soul creates a contract with them.
‘I like that girl a lot...’ Vlad thought cooly in my thoughts. He was anxious and dare I say thrilled to meet Mikeala from the moment we crossed paths. At first I had figured, Vlad was trying to sneak himself a snack by trying to eat Mikeala’s soul but I’m not sure what his true intentions are now.
“Alex we’re ready when you are.” Megan batted her eyes as she tenderly grab hold of my hand. Rei rolled his eyes in disgust standing close with his arms folded, silently murmuring ”I can’t wait for Mikeala to join.”
‘Yeah most likely kicking and screaming.’Vlad added with a chuckle.
“Let’s just get this over with.” I sighed my voice growing tired hearing everyone talk at once.

At first glance the house was like any typical home until Vlad immediately detected a powerful dark spiritual energy radiating from the house. Something was definitely wrong.
Jessie was pounding on the door frantically as we approached him. Once he turned to find us standing behind him, the color on his face instantly drained. “I-I tried to get inside but the door wouldn’t open-”
“Idiot, why didn’t you use your spirit guide.” Megan said her voice sounding bored and uninterested. It was always strange to me how Megan possessed a positive spirit considering her lack of empathy toward others whereas Rei did everything he could to make others feel better.
“You think I didn’t try that! No matter how many times I summoned my spirit guide, he wouldn’t come out!” Jessie shouted his voice frantic and distressed knowing the consequence, if a lower level student was left unattended. Level D student’s were required to be given direct supervision at all cost. From the looks of it, Jessie probably thought he could relax outside while the level D students did all the grunt work. Classic case of being an irresponsible dipshit.
“Because your spirit guide is not a dumbass like you.” I found myself cursing, surprising myself and my group members. Rei had been keeping tabs of my odd behavior but honestly I don’t know what’s going on. If I had to guess, it had to be stress.
“What do you mean?” Rei asked putting a hand over Jessie’s shoulder who was still shaken up. A loud scream pierced from inside the house shocking all of us. Fuck, we were too late.
“Everyone step back.” I ordered as Rei and Megan knew immediately to stay away from me and more importantly Vlad. “Vlad, I’m going to need you to switch forms but you are not allowed to eat any spirits or human souls.”
“You’re having him switch forms!” Megan said her voice rising almost replicating Jessie’s frantic tone.
“I am.” I replied being short and unintentionally cold, as I stepped forward toward the door and pulling out my brother’s old black phone. The idea of choosing this object for Vlad to possess was a spur of the moment.
“Vlad, this will be the only time I am going to allow this. Bring me Mikeala Hernadez and her spirit guide by any means necessary while not harming or eating any of the other human souls and spirit guides that are with her” I added.
“Hold up what the hell you mean by any means necessary! You’re basically giving Vlad a free for all to do whatever he wants to Mikaela and her spirit guide! ” Rei shouted angrily, involuntary his hand was outstretched to grab me as his outrage over came his judgment. Luckily, Megan grabbed him before anything could occur.
“Don’t be stupid! Obviously Alex has a good reason for what he’s doing!” Megan said her voice lingered with a hint of doubt but even so she knew better to have Rei touch me. Vlad could easily manipulate the situation and attack him instead pretending that he was only trying to protect me.
Vlad broke out of his shell, his shadow figure that once portrayed as a human shadow, had spines of bones with a face not even a mother could love. He carried a lopsided grin as the door slammed open for him. Specks of blackness could only be scene for a brief second as Vlad charged through the haunted house.
I followed Vlad inside, his energy could be easily tracked by the markings of the wall. Rei and Megan followed behind me as we found the claw markings growing larger, leading us to a small door that was ripped open. A full blast of rumbling exploded with a roar that sounded like an animal. As the noise continued to vibrate closer within the walls, I pushed Rei and Megan to the side as a black gust of shadows bursted out the door.
‘YOU FUCKEN DICK!’
‘FUCK YOU!’
‘YOUR MOTHER!’
The demons fought like rabid dogs clawing and using whatever tool they could use to harm the other. They were preoccupied with fighting each other as I expected from Soul eaters.
“You’re going to let Vlad eat Mikeala’s spirit guide, the fuck is wrong with you!” Rei gritted, clenching the corners of my jacket, ignoring the rules I made to not ever touch me when Vlad was in his original form.
“Rei don’t be an idiot!” Megan shoved Rei back from me, with her body somewhat trembling. “Don’t you see what kind of spirit guide Mikeala has?” her voice in a soft and shaken whisper.
Rei looked back at the monsters who had finally taken the fight out in the front yard. Fortunately, a regular human could not see the two monsters tearing through the yard, leaving spots of burn grass and holes.
“Wait-Wait, how can that be. You were suppose to be the only student to ever have a soul eater. How is it possible that she has one to?” Rei asked his voice filled with curiosity but also scared to know the answer.
“We have two humans that possess demons as spirit guides in Paranorma now." Megan said under her breath with disbelief.
“Let’s get the student’s out while Vlad is keeping Mikeala’s spirit guide busy.” I said trying to remain focus on our primary goal which is getting the students out of the house.
“Aren’t you afraid that Vlad will eat-”
“Have you ever heard of a soul eater eating another soul eater?” I said raising an eyebrow in which Rei shook his head. “Then there you have it.”
I led the group down to the basement which we found a scatter of broken glass. Jenna was laying unconscious on the floor. Sammy’s blond hair was in disarray as she sat curled in the corner of the room whimpering. A boy with dark brown hair was cradling a raven to his chest as heavy sobs escaped.
Rei rushed toward Jenna who stood motionless on the floor but as soon as he got close, a cat the size of leopard snarled at him. He took a giant step back holding up his hands trying to prove he was disarmed.
“Don’t get close to her. I’ll take care of her.” Megan stated as she walked closer toward Jenna. The cat continued to growl with canine teeth baring but Megan did not falter as she grew closer toward the roaring spirit guide. “I’m going to heal her so step aside if you want her to wake up.”
As Megan was healing Jenna and checking for any serious injury, I set my eyes in finding Mikeala. It wasn’t hard to find her crouched in the corner next to the tool table. Her hands covered her face as she faintly repeated, ” I fucked up...I fucked up.”
I knelt down in front of her knowing exactly how she felt at this moment. I reached for Mikeala’s hand, easily pulling them down from her face. Her hands were wet from the tears that she attempted to cover.
“Please leave me alone.” She pleaded her voice was rasp and tired.
I don’t know what compelled me to pull her close to me but either way she was far to weak to fight it. Her face and body were held close to my chest as I wrapped my arms around her as if I was barricading the pain from entering.
"I’m-I’m a fucken monster." Mikeala whispered finally unleashing a sob as she held my shirt tightly. Resting my head against hers, I knew this was going to be hard to go through. Nothing makes you feel more like a monster than destroying another soul whether it was intentional or not.
Unfortunately for Mikeala, she never stood chance in stopping a soul eater. She didn’t grow up in the world of the supernatural like Rei, Megan and I. She had probably viewed the level A class as snobby obnoxious pricks which is mostly true, but that’s not solely the reason why we have different classes of levels.
The levels were divided to keep the weaker spirits from being attacked by the stronger and much more aggressive spirit guides but most importantly keeping them from being eaten by Vlad.-and now Mikaela’s soul eater.
