I'm not sure how I managed to lie to Jenna over the cupcake tragedy. I am either an amazing athletic liar or Jenna has accepted that her neighbor is a complete idiotic klutz. Regardless, I had ruined her uniform that she had so graciously lent me and yet she still gave me another pair. I couldn’t be more grateful that she didn't push on the matter either. If she had pressed any further, I might have spilled everything that occurred due to the amount of stress I was under. The school systems were still down and I was unable to request for a set of uniforms or books. It was fair to say that I was going to be unprepared for another day of school. I guess things never change...
I sat in the same spot next to Jenna who had all her papers and pencils in order to start morning class. To this day, I don't think I ever took a single note. I always had a hard time focusing in school but this time I was determined to stay on tract-at least for this class. I knew this day was going to be a topic I actually wanted to focus on so I asked Jenna for a piece of paper and a pencil.
"I was wondering when you were going to ask me." She chuckled lightly seeing that I didn't even have a backpack to store any of my belongings.
Helen was yet again in a rush to start the morning. The bell already rang its last warning as soon as she stepped through the door. She quickly gazed around the room appearing to be counting attendance. "Okay guys let's get started with the day since we're a bit short on time. I have a very important announcement that I will save for the end." She added with glint of excitement in her brown eyes.
"I'm going to assume everyone read the chapter for today but I also know some people are still struggling to get their books and others are still adjusting to the supernatural school curriculum so I'm going to give everyone some grace for today." Helen smiled seeing the relief flow across each student's face.
I should have read the chapter but as soon as I returned to my dorm room, I had knocked out cold. Even Fred had trouble waking me up to get to class on time despite his efforts in throwing my toothbrush at me. However, I knew the only reason he was so generous in waking me up was because he was bored and didn't want to be stuck in a room all day.
"So let's start lecture today by talking about something positive-" Helen said looking at the class with a glint of humor that quickly died once the students let out an exasperated sigh. "I should have known y'all didn't read the chapter. Next time I'll make a quiz." Helen silently murmured under her breath.
"In general, students in class D have Positive spirits. So somebody give me a basic general characteristic that positive spirit have in common."
"They all have some kind of healing trait." Jenna answered twirling her pencil in between finger.
"That is correct. All spirits are different in their own way but we found that positive spirits have a similar theme of abilities. This does not mean that positive spirits are all the same in terms of energy and ranking. Who can tell me the three rankings?" Helen asked grabbing a marker from her desk to list on the board.
"Minor, Major and Elite. My spirit is definitely a major." A boy with freckles and dark shaggy brunette hair answered with a very cocky grin.
Jenna rolled her eyes and leaned over on her seat towards me whispering, "That's Jerald. Besides Sammy, he also thinks he's going to level up to class C."
Jerald had the same atmosphere as Sammy but worse. He was arrogant and didn't even bother to hide it. This caused the class to murmur loudly among themselves on their own spirit guide, comparing their abilities. The class was turning into an annoying competitive frenzy that I almost caught myself tuning out the lecture.
"Alright let's focus back on the lecture-" Helen said trying to reel in the class back to our main topic. The murmurs were beginning to die out and everyones eyes were back on Helen. Resting my chin against the palm of my hand, I felt an unsettling stare coming from the side of the classroom. From the corner of my eye, Jerald's creepy dark eyes were locked on me for a brief second and immediately turned back to the class. He held the same smug expression on his face even after he turned around.
‘We got another competitor on our list. This is going to be so fun!’ Fred cheered loudly in my head while I internally rolled my eyes.
I'm not competing with anyone, Fred. I had enough on my plate with Fred alone, adding some petty rivalry over ugly ass uniforms is pathetic.
"Okay, the next type of spirit that a person is able to bond with is negative spirits. What makes this type of spirit different from positive spirits?" Helen asked taking a sip of her ice venti Starbucks coffee as she leaned on the edge of the desk.
"They are cooler than positive spirits." Jerald said with a smirk not answering the question at all. This eventually led into a divide between the students who began talking loudly on the unique abilities between the type of spirit . This is worse than Edward versus Jacob...
‘But we're on team Edward, right?’
Helen whistled loudly bringing my thoughts away from Fred's ridicules question. Helen was clearly over Jerald's opinion like me. This guy obviously wanted the attention on him whether it was good or bad.
"Okay guys I want facts, not opinions or I'm just going to give everyone a quiz." Helen added her tone sounding slightly annoyed.
"Negative spirits are known to be more difficult to bond with unlike positive spirits. They draw their energy from negative emotions from individuals or other spirits." Jenna quickly answered not wanting the rest of the class to suffer for Jerald's obnoxious behavior.
"So anyone other than Jerald, can tell me at least one ability a Major spirit has?" Helen said trying to keep the class on track as well as eyeing her watch.
"Negative spirits that are labeled major have the ability to curse or hex individuals" Jenna answered again for the class trying to keep the conversation on point.
"Yes. So the last type of spirit are the Elites. I'll try to hurry and discuss one of the types for todays lecture. Which one would you guys want me to go over before I make my announcement." Helen said pulling out a bowel with slips of paper inside.
"Negative Elites." I answered without a second thought. Jenna's brown eyes were shocked to find me actually participating in discussion. Is it really that shocking for me to actively participate in my own education?
"So you're not as dumb as I think you are, Hannah Baker." Fred said his thoughts laced with a dark humorous tone.
"So negative Elites, are often referred as Soul eaters in the supernatural but Christianity views them as demons. Either name is fine for the sake of a future quiz." Helen said hinting for the class to come prepared. "Soul eaters are dangerous and very rarely form contracts because they don't like binding with humans-besides eating their souls." Helen added sounding too casual for my liking.
"So what if someone does bind or make contract with an Elite. " I asked unable to stop the questions from spilling out of my mouth.
"On the rare occurrence that an individual does bind with a spirit that is a negative Elite, it's normally someone with a strong spiritual bloodline. I will also add that negative spiritual elites are cruel in a sense for their contracts in order to bind with them. " Helen said her words creating a stillness in the class.
"What do you mean?" A student asked who was now completely invested on the topic.
"In order for a negative spirit Elite to make a contract, they will normally ask for a percentage on how long they are able to possess the individual's body." Helen answered. My thoughts immediately raced back to the contract, I made with Fred. He asked for a percentage but he gave me complete control? I don't understand...
"Mikaela, you look like you have another question." Helen smiled taking another sip of her coffee. I couldn't deny it, knowing my puzzled face was not something I hid well in general when I'm confused. I knew this question may sound too obvious or insanely stupid to the class but I didn't care.
"Hypothetically, what if the Negative Elite spirit, gave the individual 100% control over the contract, because he's an idiot." I said trying to make light with the conversation.
"Well, if this spirit did decided to give the individual 100% control of the contract then the person most likely already made a sacrifice for the agreement." Helen stated causing my heart to plummet down to my stomach. A sacrifices was already made? That doesn't make sense, I don't remember-
"Oh we're almost out of time, crap!" Helen cursed under her breath.
"I'm just gonna do this quickly then. Class D are able to go on their first assignment to exorcise their first spirit this weekend! We are selecting four students for this trip and we'll be drawing names." Helen exclaimed creating a pool of excitement in the class but I was anything but excited. I felt like I was thousands of miles away from everyone trying to think what I could have possibly sacrificed. I couldn't have done it-
"Hello, Earth to MK, did you not hear!" Jenna said her voice shrilled with excitement. The students were all looking at me and Jenna with thrill and jealously.
"Sorry, I must have dazed off" I sheepishly smiled trying to keep my composure as calm as possible.
"We are going on our first assignment together!" Jenna said shaking my shoulders.
"Don't forget I'm going to!" Jerald smirked his arms crossed on the desk. I tried not t roll my eyes disgusted by his smug face. Great this freckled freak is coming with us?
"Wait who's the fourth one?" I asked remembering for a brief moment that Helen said four students.
"Sammy is coming with us! She's going to be so freaking excited when I tell her the news!" Jenna said trying to contain her excitement as she started packing her belongings in her bag. As everyone was quickly packing their stuff, I came to the realization that I had not wrote one fucken word on my paper.
"Hey Jenna..."
"What's up?" She said pulling her purple backpack over her shoulders.
"Can I borrow your notes?"
