My first night sleeping at Paranorma Academy was a sleepless one. It was hard to wrap my brain around everything that has happened in the last three days. I was too exhausted physically and mentally to dwell on all the supernatural occurrence. If I had known the supernatural was real before maybe my reaction would be different, but right now I could care less. Because no matter how I felt about anything, the world keeps moving on with or without me. The only problem is I don’t feel like moving on yet. I just want everything to stop and let me lay in bed. A clattering of metal disrupted my thoughts sounding like silverware hitting the ground.
I turned to the other side of the bed to find a shadowy figure staring at me. I was growing use to Fred's shadowed form but I am surprised that he had kept his promise in suppressing his true version of himself.
“Were you the one giving me sleep paralysis?” I said tiredly as I rubbed my eyes trying to wake up. I had no motivation to get dressed but I knew Fred wasn't going to let me rest.
"I would never!" Fred gasped astonished by the accusation. "Also I found my way to the cafeteria and got you a bunch of food so we can stock up and get the fuck out of this joint." Fred grinned bundling everything in a sheet that was supposed to have kept me warm throughout the night.
For a second, I couldn’t be more relieved to get the hell out of this school and figure out what actually happened to my mom. On the other hand, hearing what John had to say about Fred was not something I cannot take into consideration.
Fred wasn’t my friend. He wasn’t a pet either, and literally enjoys making me suffer for his amusement. Even If I did leave this school with Fred and then figure out what happened to my mom. What happens next? Fred continues to drive me insane with his gruesome thoughts of harming others. I don’t like those options either.
“I think I’m going to stay here for a bit” I said finally making up my mind and finding the energy to sit up at the edge of my bed.
"What the hell! To think we were actually on the same page ! If this is about the sleep paralysis" Fred said finally admitting he has the power to not only invade my thoughts but also my dreams.
“No, it’s not that. I’m not planning to stay here for long before you start your tantrums again." I added before he began shouting. "But I’m not leaving right away either.” I answered firmly to which Fred was almost taken back but then turned to a cynical laugh.
"Do you think these these stupid Harry Potter wannabes can help you to control me? Is that what you’re hoping for!" Fred’s voice growing louder. I should have known he was going to start another outburst but I didn’t expect him to start throwing the food all over the room. Surprisingly, none of it hit my face. Knowing that Fred wasn’t going to calm down anytime soon, I headed to the small bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth. I was surprised that the school even provided a complimentary tooth brush and toothpaste.
“Hey MK, I got the uniform. What the fuck happened to your room!” I heard Jenna’s voice gasp completely shocked to find the room trashed with oatmeal and boxes of cereal on the floor. He could have at least stole the milk for the cereal.
"Jenna, honey, MK and I are trying to have a private conversation so get the hell out." Fred was no longer hiding himself in the shadows. He was for the first time visible to someone other than me. He was probably way too pissed off to even remember that he was trying to be invisible. I quickly spit the toothpaste in the sink and hurried out to make sure Fred wasn’t going to cause problems for Jenna.
“Knock it off Fred. Go back to chilling in the curtains or something. We’ll talk about this later” I sighed not thinking he was actually going to listen. He stuck up the middle finger at me and retreated back to the shadows in the corners of my room. Jack ass...
“Why is your spirit guide a dick” She said bewildered by the fact that Fred was speaking to her in such a way. She laid the uniform on the side of the bed that didn’t have Raisin Bran flakes crushed over it. Jenna was already dressed for the morning wearing a dark red jacket with a white buttoned shirt tucked under a black skirt.
“Not entirely sure. I’m hoping this school will help us out or we’re going to have to go to spirit couple counseling. Is that even a thing in this school.” I asked almost pleading if there was anyway to save my sanity.
“Umm, no I don't think so. Normally spirit guides protect the person they are bound to. Yours well-" Jenna paused trying to find the words to describe my chaotic demon. "He’s seems different. But don’t worry everyone has their issues with their spirit. On a good note yours already seems to be at the top three in our class. Not all spirits are able to carry or move objects like yours apparently did just now.” Jenna said almost amazed noticing all the items Fred had carried.
“Well ain’t I lucky" I muttered bitterly under my breath taking my uniform to the bathroom to get dressed.
Jenna and I walked together to our first class which was Introduction to the Paranormal. It was nice to have someone to guide you through the first day and not have the overwhelming feeling of anxiety that comes with the first day of school. As Jenna went through the class schedule with me, I was deeply disappointed that we still had the general education course like Algebra or Calculus.
“And here I thought I was going to cast some spells.” I said making Jenna chuckle opening the door to our first class. “Yeah, sorry to burst your bubble. We’re at the lowest level of the Paranorma Academy so we still get the basic education. Levels B and A are the ones that have the cool witchy stuff that you have been talking about.”
The room was almost filled with students who were already huddled in their groups talking among one another. Walking down the aisle, following Jenna behind, the students would often stop and glance at me. It was probably odd to have a student enrolled so late during the school year so I didn't put too much thought into it. Jenna placed her bag in the corner sitting next to the window while I took a seat right beside her. A girl in front was murmuring to her friend beside her as if they were trying to be secretive in hiding the fact they were whispering about me. Supernatural High school or not, you can’t beat high school cliches.
“Okay class we’re going to pick up where we left off on the levels of spirits-” A woman with curly brown hair wearing black jeans and a white blouse came through the door with a venti Starbucks drink in one hand. I didn't recognize her at the meeting with the headmaster so there has to be more faculty members than I anticipated . As the woman rushed in pulling down the projector screen, it was clear she wasn’t going to waste time to start the lecture for today.
“Okay can anyone tell me what is the lowest ranking of spirits and their abilities-Ashley?” the teacher called taking a quick sip of her iced coffee.
“Uh- I guess a ghost?” The girl replied completely taken off guard that she was the first person to be called on.
“Yes but what else? If we’re dealing with Old Betty who died at 45 who lived a fairly happy life and the only reason she’s roaming around is because she misses her living husband, is it safe to say that the spirit is a low level. What would be an exception to this rule?”
“If old Betty was trying to kill her cheating husband” Another student from the class answered causing a small snicker in the class.
“That is one possibility. So what abilities do you think this spirit may have to cause harm to her husband?” The teacher asked ignoring the chuckles from the students. Oh she was being serious?
“Depending how long this ghost has been haunting or roaming the earth. If Betty has been around for maybe less than a decade as a spirit, the worst she can probably do is make creaky noises and shadowy jump scares.” This time it was Jenna who answered.
“Yes. So what it comes down to class that in most cases we can count on the amount of years from when a person has died to the current year to determine the level of spiritual energy whether it is negative or positive. I won’t say this theory works on every spirit case because there has been special circumstances that this doesn’t always apply.” The teacher said clicking a remote that switched to the next slide. History of Evil Spiritual hauntings
This probably was one of the few times I actually paid attention to class. The world was a much bigger place and mysterious than I could have ever imagined. We learned about the different classes of spirits and historical hauntings that took place in parts of the United States. Finally one of the question I have been wanting to be answered from the moment I met the South Park goths was going to be discussed next class. Spirit guides
“Okay class that’s it for today. Don’t forget to read up on the history of Spiritual Protectors and Guides for next class. Also have fun in algebra” She smirked causing the whole class to groan. Yep, high school school never changes.
At this point, I felt that I needed to introduce myself to Ms. Helen not because I wanted extra points in being teacher’s pet but I have no idea what textbook she’s referring for us to read. I let Jenna know that I was going to talk to Ms. Helen about the textbook and she was still kind enough to wait for me either way.
“Hi, Ms. Helen. I’m Mikaela, I’m a new student here-”
“New student? In my class?” She said shocked and immediately opened her laptop. “Ah crap, I forgot where I put my damn login” She muttered lifting up pieces of paper to find where she must have written it down. “Im so sorry Mikaela, I would have definitely given you a better orientation to our class. Also if you have any question on todays lecture, this is my email.” She said quickly writing it down a post-it note. “Here you can take my book for right now. And I would highly suggest finding Sandra sometime during lunch or during your break, she’s the only one who can give us an extra copy”

I could go into detail about what happened in Algebra but honestly everything is the same, Paranormal or not. The educational classes were nothing new and eventually I had to introduce myself to the class. Now that was torture and Fred had a hoot.
Lunch was after English and I was ready to take a break from Shakespeare. I was introduced to Sammy who was in our 2nd period. I guess there’s two classes of Paranormal 101 due to the amount of students in level A.
Sammy immediately introduce herself by telling me her life story and how she figured out she had spiritual abilities at the age of six. She explained her abilities didn’t really pick up until her spirit guide manifested. I didn’t want to ask any questions on spirit guides because I’m pretty sure what I have was no regular spirit guide. So to be safe I kept my mouth shut.
Walking into the cafeteria, I was amazed at how huge it was and that there was three freakin levels! The first floor was like any high school cafeteria but as you look at the upper levels, I think there was restaurant!
Jenna seeing my gaze, she gave me a pat on the back and a sad smile “That’s for the exclusive levels A and B everyone else is stuck with the same high school crappy lunch.”
“Yep. Welcome to the social hierarchy. Students with the black uniforms and silver buttons are level B. Level A have the same color but with gold buttons incase you accidentally mistake one for the other” Sammy explained moving up the line in the cafeteria. “Don't mix them up but chances you’ll ever get one of the upper levels to talk to you-”
“HEY YOU!” A voice that sounded too painfully recognizable and I was sincerely hoping it was not directed towards me. I looked around pretending to not notice and then eventually I made the mistake in looking up. It was Rei leaning against the rail at the top floor gleefully waving at me.
“He’s not talking to you is he?” Sammy stared back at me looking as if I had kept a secret of betrayal.
“Uh No-” My instinct was to lie but again I should have just shut up.
“MIKEALA! I told you we would eventually meet again!” He yelled giving a cheeky and honey sweet smile. I couldn’t help but smile back returning a small and very awkward wave. This guy’s smile was annoyingly contagious. His tall friend stood up from the table pulling Rei from the collar of his jacket to sit down.
“Sorry if he embarrassed you, Mikaela” Alex the giant said giving a small smirk. I was unsure if he was smirking at me or his goofy friend.
“No problem.” I answered. I wasn't sure that they even heard me as they both resumed back to their table but I didn't care. There was no way I was gonna yell back like Rei had done. What I didn’t realize during this short greeting was how silent the cafeteria actually became.
’Look at you Miss popular, everyone is fuming with jealously right now. You know what let’s stay. I think I might enjoy hanging around here for a bit.’ Fred revealing himself through my thoughts during my worst moments yet again.
Fuck you Fred…
