Eric, Emmanuel, and I walked out of the house as Eric messed with the keys in his hands. I got into the front seat as Emmanuel made himself comfortable in the back. Half of the entire ride, none of us talked. I looked out of the window most of the time, and then my phone went off. Looking down, I that it was from Delcan.
Delcan:
Hey. Bad time?
Me:
It never would be.
What’s up?
Delcan:
Dad is giving us a drive to school right now and he’s continuing to ask me the question about “where our relationship is.”
It’s so ⟴ annoying.
Me:
Ha.
Pretty sure my parents are ten times worse, though.
Delcan:
You’re right. Probably shouldn’t complain.
Me:
You’re good.
Delcan:
Callie said hi, and that she wanted to ask you something tonight.
I don’t know what Callie could possibly want to ask me, but I was a bit worried. She never really seems interested in me at all, and when she is, it’s only because her brother is clearly annoying her. It was actually nice for her to not want to be so involved in my life because it made the whole situation better whenever I was trying my best not to blush around him.
Me:
Alright…
And about tonight
Delcan:
I get it. No big deal. I was actually about to ask if we could reschedule for another night or something.
Oh, I forgot to ask.
Are you alright? From last night and everything?
Me:
Yeah. I mean, as okay as I could get.
But I got in trouble for coming home late last night, so if we did hang out, I’d only be able to stay until ten. But that’s still a lot of time, I guess.
Delcan:
Yeah...another night then?
Me:
Sure.
How come your sister suddenly wants to ask me questions?
Delcan:
How am I supposed to know?
Oh, my dad wants to know if you’re a virgin or not.
Me:
Don’t you dare.
Delcan:
Too late, Ezra.
I told him that you’ve never dated a guy before and you don’t get drunk. So in terms of guys, yes. But girls, no.
Me:
Sometimes, I hate you.
Delcan:
Aw. How sweet of you.
I’m at school. Gotta go.
Me:
Okay. Bye.
Delcan:
Peace.
I put my phone into the cup holder and looked up. Apparently, Emmanuel had been saying my name for the past five minutes and had now resulted to kicking my seat, creating a beat that I could tell was annoying Eric. I turned around in a quick second and looked at Emmanuel, who was laughing as he fell back into his seat.
“What do you want?” I asked him.
Emmanuel shrugged. “Who were you texting?” he asked me, beaming now.
I had to bite back my smile, but I was able to just in time. Eric actually had the nerve to clear his throat, but he didn’t say a word. “Nobody,” I said, biting back the urge to argue with my older brother.
“Is it Haven?” Emmanuel asked, his curiosity higher than before.
I shook my head as Eric finally looked over to me on a red light. His look was telling me to never show Emmanuel my phone, which I already mastered after he stole my phone from me a few years ago. I gave him an eyebrow raise before turning back to Emmanuel.
When we pulled up to Emmanuel’s school (about seven minutes away from EastLand), Emmanuel jumped out of the car in a hurry and ran up to the front of the car, where he opened up my door. I didn't move for a few seconds, but then he grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the car. I hit his arm. “E, I gotta go to school, too,” I said, beginning to pull away from him. But the second I actually got away from him, he gripped my other wrist.
“I want you to meet her,” he said. Then I’d remembered the girl he told me about. It wouldn’t hurt, I guess. Shrugging, I saw the grin on my brother’s face as he pulled me towards his school.
