Right before semester exams, I always lose myself.
Maybe it was bad to agree to become somebody’s boyfriend. Evelyn’s told me on countless occasions I will ignore anyone when it comes to studying and acing semester exams. I don’t really believe her, but I’m worried about risking it.
I had told Evvie weeks later about my date with Delcan, and she had to cover her mouth to keep from squealing. “Holy crap! He opened up to you?!” she hit my arm playfully as I hid my face in my locker. “You’re scoring, Ezra Gatley!”
We talked about it for the entire week before while I continued to find myself smiling. My mom was barely speaking words now, helping me when I asked her to, and dropped me off at school while I texted Delcan in the passenger seat. She never asked who I was texting, and I never questioned her again on Armani.
It was Friday, the week before semester exams, and two weeks from our Winter Break. I, per usual, was stressed, and Evelyn found the perfect time to make fun of me for it. While Evvie, Haven, and her were talking about my boyfriend, I was skimming through notes from each teacher I had. I always liked knowing what was on the test before I even took it.
“I mean, he’s kind of a man whore-”697Please respect copyright.PENANAW6GxVmMBhn
“Kind of?!” Evelyn laughed. “He is one, Haven.”697Please respect copyright.PENANATBfsacoPjs
I looked up to see Evvie rolling her eyes. “Used to be a man whore.”
Haven shrugged, leaning back in her chair. “He still is when you think about it.”
“You’re just upset he stole your boyfriend,” Evvie argued.
I looked up from my phone. “I’d appreciate it if all of you stopped,” I told them. My voice didn’t come out as stern as I had hoped it would, but they all seemed to get the message. Evelyn left for reasons she wouldn’t explain, leaving Evvie and Haven to talk about anything but Delcan.
“But seriously though, I’m going to barley pass that A.P. science exam,” Haven said, resting her head on the table. I looked over to her, noticing that her hair was beginning to get lighter and lighter.
Evvie relaxed in her seat. “I don’t think you understand how hard it is to pass Calculus exams,” she said. “I’ve seriously never even heard of half the things he’s talking about, and I’m usually asking help from Ezie.”
Haven laughed. “Don’t we all?”697Please respect copyright.PENANAsEj0zgfugB
I would’ve responded, but I didn’t have any energy for it. On Monday, semester exams began. And though all I’d be doing Monday is a computer exam and some running, I was still worried. It almost didn’t feel like there was enough time in a day for everything. Only twenty-four hours? Why can’t time just stop, just to give me a second to breathe?
Haven and Evvie said their goodbyes to me, Evvie demanding that I call her later so we can talk about Delcan. I told her yes at the time, but she should’ve known by now. In semester exams, I hardly ever use my phone.
