As Evvie, Delcan, and I sat down in detention, I scanned the room to see if any of the guys from the football team was here. Seeing as most of them just flirt with the cutest girl in the class during the lesson, I was surprised (and thankful) to see none of them in there today. I was forced into the chair next to Delcan as Mr. Young explained to us what we were supposed to do while we spent the hour in here. Once he was done talking, all of us “got to work.”
Evvie leaned over to me while Mr. Young wasn’t watching and whispered: “Do you know how Angelica could’ve gotten the video?” Just thinking about anything to do with the situation bothered me, and I hated that it continued to be brought up.
“Don’t know and don’t care,” I muttered. “Plus, I’d probably have to ask her about it in the first place.” Evvie nodded slowly, then took my phone out of my bag. I tried grabbing it back from her quickly, but she moved away from me.
“What the ⟴ are you doing?” I asked her.
She unlocked my phone easily, and I was wondering when I started telling people my phone password. And if I should change it. “Chill,” she whispered. “I’m texting Angelica.”
Before I could try reaching for my phone again, I felt Delcan’s shoulder brush mine as he watched Evvie: his eyes green. “What’d I miss?” he asked, not sounding actually interested in whatever happens. He glanced at me for a quick second before looking away and hiding his face again.
Why is he doing this?
“I’m gonna text Angelica,” Evvie said. “You might as well see what she knows.”
I don’t really care about what she knows. “Give it back, Aryn-Grace,” I said to her, using her middle name. Evvie looked over to me, and a smile spread on her face.
“That’s not my real middle name,” she said.
I hesitated. “What?”
“That’s just my American middle name,” she explained to me. “It’s a lot longer than that, and in Spanish. Probably is the same with Delcan.”
I looked over to him, and he was nodding. “My parents would never make my middle name Colt.”
“Colt?” I asked him. If he ever had told me his American middle name, I couldn’t remember when it was. Then again, most of the time when he was telling me his name, I would sometimes zone out because of how long I’d be looking at him.
He nodded. “My middle name is pretty long,” he muttered. “So they just decided to change it in order for others to be happy. But I wish they didn’t, because watching people try to say it is hilarious.” Delcan smiled, looking like he was thinking about some distant memory. But I wasn’t thinking about even asking him what it was, because I knew he’d fall into laughter hearing me try to say his name.
Evvie chuckled to herself as she began texting Angelica under the table. Neither one of us were able to watch what she was texting, and I wrote down I’m screwed over and over on a piece of paper since I didn’t have any homework (extremely shocking). I didn’t look back to Delcan this time when he looked over to me, because I didn’t understand what was wrong with him.
After what felt like hours, Evvie handed my phone back to me. I took it quickly and looked at the messages between Angelica and “me” while I pretended not to notice Delcan looking at my phone.
Friday, 3:30 P.M.
“Me”:
How’d you get that video?
Angelica Bronx:
I was going back into the school to get Haven’s gym clothes, and I heard your voice, mixed in with someone else. So..I investigated.
“Me”:
Then why would you pull out your phone?
Angelica Bronx:
Because you were acting weird. And I really don’t think friends talk about kissing each other, do you?
“Me”:
Did you show the video to anybody else?
Angelica Bronx:
You with the questions.
And by anyone else, do you mean Haven? Or worse, my parents?
“Me”:
That’s not a real answer, Angelica.
Angelica Bronx:
No, I haven’t. But you need to tell Haven that you and hat Delcan guy are a lot more than friends. But trust me, she won’t like it…
“Me”:
Why’s that?692Please respect copyright.PENANAz4HQ1ELlCa

Angelica Bronx:
She’s getting suspicious anyway, Ezra. She’ll find out one way or another.
“Me”:
Why can’t you just tell her?
Angelica Bronx:
Because unlike you, I can’t stand to break my sister’s heart. And I really don’t think I could tell her without getting emotional about it.
“Me”:
I didn’t want to break her heart.
She was just there. I didn’t know she wanted to be more than friends.
Angelia Bronx:
Did you know you weren’t straight before Haven and you began dating?
“Me”:
Why do you need that information?692Please respect copyright.PENANACO7XkfjuJX

Angelica Bronx:
So that’s a yes.
That means you had no problem breaking her heart. You never really loved her, and if you did, you would’ve told her a long time ago. But not only that, you lied to her. Her, me, and our entire family.
You should’ve just told her so it could’ve been faked. She would’ve been just fine with it. But now, seeing in the situation you put yourself in, she isn’t going to be happy.
“Me”:
This isn’t a choice you get to make. It isn’t my fault I can’t change.
Angelica Bronx:
You’re right. I can’t change that you like guys: including Delcan.
But you could change the way you are towards Haven. And you could change all of the lies you’ve told her.
Consider it, Ezra Gatley. Before I do.
Then the messages stopped. I set my phone down and focused on a book in my backpack, keeping my eyes off of Evvie or Delcan. This was getting too out of hand. Angelica would tell Haven soon, with or without my permission.
I just didn’t know if I could actually face her with the truth.
