Within just five minutes, Makenna and Jessica were sitting in their homeroom classroom with Mrs. Hector, their teacher, and they were waiting for their report cards to be handed out. They were lucky, they had Jimmy Carter in their homeroom! Great, just when Makenna’s morning couldn’t get any worse with him, they had to be given their report cards in homeroom. Makenna failed. She knew she did. She was in danger of going to summer school with Jimmy Carter. Jessica was a much better student than she and Jimmy. Unlike her and Jimmy, she was passing all her classes. Makenna didn’t really care about school and grades as long as she had her phone, nail polish, and Peter Nelson. She had really changed since she was seven years old.
Mrs. Hector soon stood up from her desk, and she clapped her hands together, saying, “Students, may I have your attention please?” The students didn’t hear. They were too busy chitchatting. Mrs. Hector sighed and pushed her glasses closer to the bridge of her nose. Then she reached into her purse and pulled out a mallet, banging it on the face of the table. As she banged it, she said, “Order, order!” as if they were in a courtroom. The students soon calmed down and focused their attention on her, except Makenna and Jimmy.
Makenna was messing with her nails, and Jimmy was eyeing her with raised eyebrows, mouthing,
“Fairy Girl” at her.
Ignoring them, Mrs. Hector announced, “Attention, students, because I was in such a rush this morning, I forgot to get the report cards out of my mailbox. Therefore, I am going to run to the office and get them, and until I return…,” She pointed her hand at the Promethean board that had assignments in all classes written down on it, “I want you to pull out your planners and jot down these assignments. When I return with the report cards, I will call each of you up individually, you will show me your planner, and I’ll give you your report card. Does that sound fair enough?”
The students, not including Makenna and Jimmy, together nodded and said, “Yes, ma’am.”
“Good.” Mrs. Hector said, “I’ll be right back.” After that statement, she scooted out of the room, and students pulled out their planners, starting to write. As they wrote, they chitchatted with each other.
Makenna was the only one who didn’t have her planner out. She was too busy texting on her phone, and every once in a while, out of the corners of her eyes, she peered at Jessica who was carefully writing assignments down in her planner. Makenna scoffed. She didn’t have time for this rubbish.
Focusing on her phone’s screen again, she took a selfie and admired herself, saying, “Oh yeah, Makenna Delling, you are one beautiful girl.” She fluffed her hair, and she was just about to take another selfie when suddenly, guess what, Jimmy Carter opened his big mouth.
He asked Makenna, “Hey, Fairy Girl, what are you going to do about your report card?”
“Shut up, Jimmy.” Makenna said. She placed her phone on her desk’s face and turned to Jimmy. Her fingers were gripping the top of the chair, and she glared at Jimmy who chuckled meanly.
Standing up, he approached Makenna’s desk and crossed his arms, saying, “I can’t wait for us to be in summer school together. We’ll have lots of fun together, eh, Fairy Girl?”
“‘Fairy Girl.’” Makenna mimicked. She also stood up, and she clenched her fist, adding, “I said shut up!”
Heads turned toward the two teenagers, and Jessica, trying her best to remain calm, reached for Makenna’s arm and asked, “Hey, why can’t we just all get along?” She grasped her friend’s arm and tried to sit her down, adding, “Sit down, Makenna.”
Makenna glared. “Don’t touch me!” she shouted. She ripped her arm free, and Jessica gasped. Makenna was looking for a fight. Jimmy Carter chuckled. He loved making Makenna mad.
A small group of students had formed around the fairy and bully, and a few kids whispered, “Fight, fight, fight, fight!” Makenna was ready for a fight. She could whoop Jimmy’s butt any time! He deserved a good butt-kicking. She was going to give him something even worse than just a flock of doves!
Jimmy noticed Makenna’s anger, and he laughed, saying, “Watch out,” as he held up his hands, “I made the fairy mad!”
“I’m not a fairy!” Makenna snapped. She clenched her fists and lifted them, “Bring it on, Jimmy!” Jimmy rolled up his sleeves and cracked his knuckles.
Then he took a step closer to her and said, “I can now see why Peter Nelson isn’t inviting you to the Spirit Week Dance next week.”
“SHUT UP!!” Makenna shouted. She tackled Jimmy, and the students gasped, including Jessica. Now, Makenna and Jimmy were wrestling on the ground, and Makenna had him by the arms. Jimmy pushed her off and grabbed her ponytail, starting to pull it. Lifting her foot, Makenna kicked him in the chest and knocked him to the ground.
“Oh!” some students shouted.
“Makenna!” Jessica shouted. She jumped up from her seat and wrapped her arms around Makenna’s body, starting to pull her away from Jimmy. Makenna screamed and tried to break free. She succeeded, and the second she was free, she yelled again and was lifted into the sky. Her entire body, including her necklace pendant glowed up blue, and bringing her hands forward, a large, bright blue light escaped them and pushed Jimmy into the wall!
Still yelling, Makenna closed her eyes and extended her arms, shouting, “I CAN’T CONTROL THIS! HELP! JESSICA!” Waves of blue lights shot in every direction, and students screamed, diving under their desks.
Jimmy pointed at Makenna and shouted, “The fairy’s gone mad!” Then he too dove under a desk.
Mrs. Hector soon reentered the classroom with her arms full of report cards, and she said,
“Okay, students, here are your…AH!” She screamed at the sight of all the chaos, “What in the world?!” Hugging the report cards close to her chest, she too dove under a desk. After a bit, Makenna calmed down, and she fell to her knees, taking deep breaths. Her necklace pendant stopped glowing. When Makenna opened her eyes, she gasped at what she saw. The room was a mess! Books, papers, planners, etc. were everywhere, and all the students, including the teacher, were cowering under desks, shaking. Makenna didn’t remember what happened though.
She even asked, “Wait, what happened?!”
“Whoa.” Jessica shakily said.
“Geez, Delling,” Jimmy Carter said from under his desk, “you really are a freak.”
“But I,” Makenna said in a choked voice, “I don’t even know what I just did.” She was telling the truth too. She stepped back. She had to figure this mystery out, and she knew the perfect place to think. With tears streaming down her cheeks, she grabbed her backpack and sprinted out of the classroom into the hallway.
She could hear Mrs. Hector calling after her, “Makenna, wait!” Makenna was too scared to go back. Why did this have to happen to her at the very beginning of the day? There was something seriously wrong with her. She ran by the line of Ninth Grade lockers and halted at the door of the girl’s bathroom. She hoped that nobody was inside. She wanted to be alone so she could figure this out. Checking her blue wristwatch, Makenna saw that first period, Algebra, started in ten minutes. She had plenty of time. Dropping her hand, she grabbed ahold of her arm and massaged it. As she did so, she tried to hold back her tears, but they kept on falling. One teardrop entered her mouth, and Makenna could taste its saltiness. She continued to massage her arm. When finally, she stopped, she dropped her hand and pushed the door of the bathroom open.
Makenna was facing a wall. Stepping into the bathroom, she closed the door behind her and shivered. It was colder in the bathroom than in her classroom and hallway. Makenna’s fingertips gripped the end of the wall, and she peeked out to the actual bathroom. Like most school bathrooms, it was disgusting, but at least it was an ideal place to think. Makenna rubbed tears from her eyes and stepped out from behind the wall. She placed her backpack on the sinks, and directly behind her was a line of bathroom stalls. It was a decent-sized school bathroom. Makenna pushed her backpack off to the side, and taking a deep breath, she leaned in close to the mirror and examined herself, but all she saw was a normal, fourteen-year-old girl and nothing else. The scent of perfume took over her nose, and the smell indicated that someone else had recently been in the bathroom. Makenna tried to answer all the questions that swam in her brain, but nothing came to the old noggin.
Groaning, she asked, “What is happening to me?!” and turned her head, examining the pointy ear. Then she turned her head the other way and checked her other ear. Boy, she did look like a freak. She had one pointy ear and one round ear. How was she supposed to hide her pointy ear? Yeah, she could take her hair out of the ponytail, but the thing was, she didn’t like wearing her hair down. She liked wearing it up because she thought she looked more “beautiful” with it up. Makenna soon peered down to her necklace pendant, and she gasped, narrowing her eyebrows. It was her necklace! Her necklace was the reason why all this weirdness was happening to her! She had to take it off! She had to! Makenna nodded. Yeah, she loved her necklace, but she didn’t want it to change her anymore. Therefore, young Makenna reached for the pendant and tried to pull it off, but like when she was seven years old, blue lightning bolts escaped it, and the necklace shocked her! Yelling, Makenna fought the pain and kept on trying to pull off the necklace but failed. She couldn’t do it! Every time she tried pulling the necklace off, it shocked her! It was glued to her neck! Makenna yelled in frustration. Then, suddenly, she didn’t feel her feet on the ground! She was slowly lifting into the sky like a balloon let loose! Makenna started to freak out, and letting go of her necklace, she grabbed the sinks to prevent herself from floating to the ceiling. Her legs were held high in the sky, and her ponytail was waving like she was swimming in the ocean. Makenna tried telling herself that this was nothing more than just a mere dream. In reality, she was probably still in her homeroom, getting ready to kick Jimmy Carter’s butt. Until the dream was over with though, Makenna had to deal with this. She had to deal with the fact that she was hovering in midair, holding onto the bathroom’s sinks. Peering down at her hands, Makenna gasped when suddenly, her fingernails changed color! They changed to blue! Then they changed to black and back to blue! Makenna’s fingers soon became sweaty, and they started to slip, her saying, “No, no, no!” and she tried to hold on, but she didn’t succeed. Her fingers slipped, and she caught an updraft to the ceiling. Freaking out, Makenna flapped her arms and shouted, “HELP! HELP! I CAN’T GET DOWN!!” And she couldn’t, “JESSICA! MRS. HECTOR! PLEASE!!” She tried to float back down to the ground, but something, perhaps her necklace, wouldn’t let her. Makenna was trapped!
Under her breath, she said,
“This could be bad,” and she gasped when suddenly, she heard pounding feet outside in the hallway, sprinting toward the girl’s bathroom, and then she heard the voice of Mrs. Hector, “Makenna! Makenna, where are you?!”
Makenna gasped again. “Mrs. Hector!” she yelled, “I’m in here! I’m in the girl’s bathroom! Hurry!” Soon, the door to the bathroom opened, and Mrs. Hector, along with Jessica, entered it and searched for Makenna. They tilted their heads up and gasped at the sight of her hovering at the ceiling. Smiling nervously, Makenna said, “And while you’re down there, Mrs. Hector and Jessica, do you think you can bring me two Sunny Side Up Eggs and a glass of orange juice please?”
“Makenna!” Jessica said shocked. She crossed her arms, “Aren’t you a little old to be playing Peter Pan?”
“I think my condition’s getting worse.” Makenna told her, “I can’t get down! I’m trapped!” Mrs. Hector was staring at her.
Without taking her eyes off her student, she nudged Jessica and said, “Jessica, go get the nurse and Dr. Medford.”
“Yes, ma’am.” Jessica said. She turned on her heel and hurried out of the bathroom. Makenna and Mrs. Hector were left alone in it.
Mrs. Hector continued to stare at Makenna. She wasn’t even blinking. She looked like a zombie.
There was an awkward silence between the teacher and her student, and finally, Makenna broke it by nodding and saying, “This is nice. I’ve always wanted to be trapped in the school bathroom. I…yikes!” Suddenly, she dropped! She fell toward the ground! One minute ago, Makenna was floating in midair, and now she was hurtling toward the floor!
Gasping, Mrs. Hector yelled, “Makenna!” and she hurried under her and held out her arms to catch her.
“Mrs. Hector, no!” Makenna shouted. She held out her hand, “Don’t try to catch me!” It was too late. Once again, her necklace pendant glowed up red, and the blast of energy that got Peter got Mrs. Hector. She yelled as she was thrown back, and she landed hard on the tile ground, ouch, on her back. “Mrs. Hector!” Makenna screamed. She had accidentally knocked her out!
Soon, the young fairy’s necklace changed back to blue, and like when she was eleven years old, it caught her and slowly brought her back to the ground. Once Makenna’s feet touched it, she gasped at the sight of her teacher, “Oh no!” and brought her hands to her mouth, “What have I done?! Dr. Medford is going to be steamed!” Her fingernails changed from blue to black, the color that represented fear, and she tried to figure out what to do.
Soon, Jessica returned to the girl’s bathroom with the nurse, Mrs. Edith, who was a tall, short-haired woman and Dr. Medford, the principal, who was a slightly plump, gray-haired man who looked very strict.
All three people gasped at the sight of Makenna and Mrs. Hector, and Mrs. Edith yelled, “Mrs. Hector!” She hurried to Mrs. Hector and kneeled.
After a bit, Makenna’s teacher woke, and opening her eyes, she peered into Mrs. Edith’s face and said, “Oh, Mrs. Edith, I just had a terrible nightmare.”
“It’s okay, dear.” Mrs. Edith said. She helped Mrs. Hector sit and took her hand, “I’m right here.”
“I’m doomed.” Makenna said under her breath, “I’m going to go to juvenile jail. Oh, snap.”
She tried to sneak away, but Dr. Medford, who was glaring, stopped her and said, “Miss Delling, come to my office.”
“But I,” Makenna protested, but Dr. Medford didn’t let her finish.
“Now!” he sternly said. Makenna jumped.
Nodding, she said, “Yes, Dr. Medford,” and she followed him out of the bathroom and into the hallway.
“Dr. Medford, wait!” Mrs. Hector called from behind. Standing up, she grabbed Jessica’s wrist and dragged her into the hallway where they met up with Dr. Medford and Makenna. They together focused their attention on her. Mrs. Hector shook Jessica’s wrist, and she added with, “Jessica and I are coming with you. We will serve as Makenna’s witnesses.”
“We will?” Jessica nervously asked. She didn’t really want to go to the principal’s office.
“Yes,” said Mrs. Hector. She let Jessica go and peered into her face, “We will.” Jessica gulped.
Then she and Mrs. Hector together glanced at Dr. Medford who rubbed his beard and said, “Very well, and perhaps together, we will figure out what to do with you, young Makenna. Whether to send you home, send you to class, or send you to court.”
“Court?” Makenna asked, “Oh no, Dr. Medford.” She held up her hands, “I’m too young to go to court. It was an accident! It was my necklace!”
“Oh please.” Dr. Medford said, clearly not believing her, “How dare you lie to me, Makenna!”
“She’s not lying.” Jessica said. Dr. Medford, Mrs. Hector, Makenna, and Mrs. Edith, who had just exited the bathroom, together glanced at her. Jessica added, “She’s telling the truth. Since the beginning of the week, she’s been going through a rapid metamorphosis. Her necklace pendant suddenly became very protective of her, and it blasts anyone who gets too close to her.”
“That’s right.” Makenna said. She glanced at Mrs. Hector, “And that’s what happened to you, Mrs. Hector. I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
“You don’t understand, Dr. Medford.” Jessica said, “None of you adults do. Caleb, Makenna’s younger brother, claims that she is a fairy, and I’m starting to think he’s right!”
“Jessica!” Makenna shouted, “How dare you mention f-a-i-r-y!”
Though Dr. Medford, Mrs. Edith, and Mrs. Hector clearly didn’t believe Jessica, they remained calm, and Dr. Medford said, “Let’s go to my office and discuss this matter. Thank you, Jessica.”
Jessica nodded. “Of course, Dr. Medford,” she said.
Makenna was lucky, thanks to Jessica and Mrs. Hector. Dr. Medford let her off clean this time, but he sent her home, with her report card and told her that perhaps next week, her condition would be better, and she would be back to normal. When a confused Michelle, Makenna’s mother, came to pick her up, Dr. Medford explained to her what happened and about her report card, in which her highest grade was a 67, and that was in her English class. Of course. Of course, Makenna failed her report card again. Dr. Medford also explained to Mrs. Delling that Makenna had one last chance to bring her grades up, or else she was going to be attending summer school. Makenna didn’t care. The entire time Dr. Medford was giving his lecture, she played with her nails and took selfies. Well, that resulted in a heated lecture that Mrs. Delling gave her on the way home, and she punished her daughter by taking away her phone for two weeks and telling her that until she got her life together and her grades went up to the mid-80s, she was not going to be attending ballet lessons. Now, this angered Makenna.
She tried protesting, but Mrs. Delling simply told her, “It’s too late, Makenna. You have broken the Circle of Trust, and until those grades go up and we figure out your condition, you will not be attending ballet lessons!” After those couple of lines, Makenna was silent the rest of the way home. When they got home, which they still lived in the two-story house on Seabrook Island’s Jenkins Point, Mrs. Delling ordered Makenna to her room and told her to start hitting the books and that they would discuss the situation with Mr. Delling when he got home.
Makenna simply rolled her eyes and said, “Yes, your Majesty,” and she stormed up to her room.
Now that she and Caleb were no longer little kids, they didn’t share a room anymore. They each had their own room now, but both rooms were still up on the second story of the house, and both Makenna and Caleb shared a bathroom. Makenna’s room was very girly. Every time someone entered the room, the scent of perfume would invade their nostrils, and sometimes the scent was so strong that people choked a little bit. The room had a total of four walls, which every wall was painted pink, and there was a large window in the back of the room that had blue curtains. Looking out the window, people could see the Gator Pond, the pond next to the house that Makenna and Caleb used to pretend was Mermaid Lagoon. Makenna’s bed was in the middle of the room, propped up against her back wall, and the window, along with a pink nightstand, was directly next to it. The bed’s bedspread was blue with white stripes, similar to the top she wore, and her pillow was white. Resting on the wooden floor was a fluffy white rug, and Makenna’s closet, which was also white, was next to the doorway. Her wooden desk was propped up against another wall, and on the face of it, rested her blue laptop. Next to the desk was a small bookcase, and on her nightstand that was next to her bed was a lamp, a digital clock, and different nail polishes. Her dresser, which was propped up against another wall, had a tall mirror hovering over it, and on the face of the dresser rested all her makeup and perfume. In the corner of the room sat a chest of stuffed animals, since Makenna loved stuffed animals, and she also had a pink ceiling fan that was always turned on. The walls of her room were decorated with different pictures and elementary school paintings.
When Makenna returned to her room after her wonderful short school day, she didn’t study. She just tossed her book bag onto the floor, kicked off her shoes, grabbed some sky-blue nail polish, and tuned her radio, which was resting on her nightstand, to My 102.5, her favorite radio station. Then she plopped down on her bed and studied her blue fingernails. She shook her head. This was too weird.
Makenna soon said, “No,” and she unscrewed the cap of her nail polish, “I can’t have this. It’s unacceptable.” Holding out her right hand, she took the brush out of the nail polish and took a deep breath. Then she brought her hand to her face and started to paint over her nails. She sighed as gradually; the nail color changed from blue to sky blue. When finally, she finished her first hand, she smiled and admired her work, but then, she lost her smile when suddenly, the sky-blue nail polish dissolved back into her nails and was replaced by the blue nails again! Makenna gasped. “Oh no!” she said, “Not again!” She was so fed up with all this weirdness! First, it was her ears, and now her nails. What was Makenna supposed to do? She thought about this for a bit. Then, she got it! Leaping up from her bed, she hurried to her and Caleb’s bathroom and disappeared inside. After a bit, she rushed back out, and in one hand, she held a few cotton balls, and in the other, she held a bottle of nail polish remover. Young Makenna leaped back onto her bed, and opening the bottle of nail polish remover, she wet a cotton ball and then closed the bottle again. Then, she focused on her blue nails and started rubbing the remover on them, hoping that the color would go away, but it didn’t. No matter how hard Makenna tried, she could not get her nails to return to their normal color. She spent an entire hour trying to remove the blue, but it was a waste of her time, and she also used up all the nail polish remover. When finally, the bottle was empty, Makenna yelled when she saw that nothing except the remover was on the cotton ball. Angry, she threw the bottle and cotton ball on the floor and watched as her nails changed from blue to red.
Flustered Makenna took deep breaths, and eventually, when she calmed herself down, her nails changed back to blue. Focusing on her feet, a light bulb appeared above Makenna’s head. She knew what to do. Instead of painting her fingernails, she would paint her toenails. Perfect! Now there was an idea. Exhaling, Makenna removed her blue, over-the-knee socks and tossed them onto the floor. Then she reached for her sky-blue nail polish again and sighed as she removed the brush.
When Makenna was ready to start painting, she brought the brush to her toenails but froze when she saw that just like her fingernails, they were also blue! “No!” she shouted, “Not you guys too!” She tried painting over her toenails but also just like her fingernails, the polish dissolved back into them, and only the blue was shown. While Makenna was sitting there, her toenails and fingernails together changed to red, and also, her other ear, the one that wasn’t pointy, became pointy! Now Makenna officially had two pointy ears, but she was unaware because she didn’t feel her other ear change. Right now, she was too focused on her fingernails and toenails and the fact that she would probably never be able to paint her nails again. This made Makenna very depressed. She loved painting her nails. In just one week, she was losing everything important to her: her ballet lessons, her joy of painting her nails, etc. Sniffing, Makenna’s nails changed to a darker shade of blue, and she put her hands behind her head and flopped down on her pillows.
She couldn’t hold it in any longer.
Makenna started to sob, and in a choked voice, she shouted, “MOM! MOM! PLEASE! I NEED YOU!” Michelle was downstairs, and she was heading toward the living room, but she stopped at the base of the stairs when she heard Makenna.
Gasping, she asked, “Makenna?” and started to jog up the stairs.
“MOM!” Makenna yelled, “HURRY!” Her mother sped up her pace, and finally reaching the second story of the house, she approached Makenna’s door and turned the knob, opening it.
She stepped into Makenna’s room, and at the sight of her daughter crying on her bed, she asked, “Makenna, what’s wrong?” and started to approach her.
“My condition!” Makenna frightfully said, “It’s getting worse!” She peered down on her shaking hands and watched as now, black mixed in with the blue. The two colors mixed together showed that Makenna was both scared and depressed.
Mrs. Delling gasped, and she asked, “Worse?! What do you mean ‘worse’?!” She rushed to Makenna’s bed and sat down, resting her left palm on the bedsheet.
Makenna spilled her guts.
As she sobbed, she shuddered and said, “Mo-Mom, my-my nai-nails! And my-my ears! I-I’m tur-turning into a-a fre-freak!”
“Makenna,” Mrs. Delling said calmly, “calm down.”
She reached out to hug her daughter, but Makenna held out her hands and shouted, “NO! DON’T TOUCH ME!!”
“Calm down,” repeated Mrs. Delling. She studied her daughter’s flushed face and noticed that she was sweating a little bit. “Makenna,” she said, “you look like you may be feeling a bit under the weather.” Now that she mentioned it, Makenna did feel a little sick. She was very tired. She didn’t want to study and paint her nails; she wanted to sleep. Sighing, Michelle added, “We won’t deal with that report card today. Today, I want you to rest, and I’m going to call the doctor.”
“No!” Makenna protested. She didn’t like the d-o-c-t-o-r, “Do-don’t call the doctor, Mo-Mom! Please! I-I’m fine!”
“No, you’re not, Makenna.” Mrs. Delling said, “There is obviously something wrong with you. I don’t know what it is, but I’m sure the doctor can help.”
“No, Mom!” Makenna shouted, “You can’t bring the doctor in! You don’t understand! Nobody can get close to me!”
“Makenna, please,” said Michelle, “I just want to help you. I don’t want to see my fourteen-year-old child scared and ill. Now, calm down.”
She reached out to hug her daughter again, but Makenna shouted, “Mom, no! Get back!” and she held her left palm out to her mother which suddenly, a ball of blue light appeared in it! Her necklace pendant started to gradually turn red again, but before it could attack Michelle, Makenna attacked her instead! She released the ball of light, and it hit Mrs. Delling straight in the chest! She yelled as she was thrown back and landed on Makenna’s fluffy, white rug.
“I’m sorry, Mom!” Makenna said, and her nails returned to blue, “but I had no choice! You can’t get near me!”
Mrs. Delling sat up on the rug, and she shook her head, saying, “I’m going to call the doctor.” She jumped to her feet, and Makenna groaned as she watched her sprint out of the room and slam the door behind her.
She reached for her forehead, shook her head, and said, “Oh, I really don’t feel all that great.” She really didn’t. Closing her eyes, Makenna plopped down on her pillow, and the second her head touched it, her world went black. She fell asleep, and believe it or not, but she slept for the rest of the day. Nothing could wake her up. Not even a nuclear bomb.
As Makenna slept, she dreamed. She dreamed that she was resting on her back in a meadow on a beautiful, sunny day, and hovering over her, staring down at her face, was another young, teenage girl; she seemed to be maybe thirteen years old, a little younger than Makenna. She was a very pretty girl who had long, curly, blonde hair and beautiful, blue eyes, similar to Makenna’s eyes. In a way, the girl looked a little bit like her, except for the fact that her hair was blonde, not brown. The girl looked very innocent.
She chuckled and said, “Come with me, Makenna.” Chuckling again, she jogged past Makenna and headed up a hill. From where she rested, Makenna sat up and smiled at the girl who was now on top of the hill, waving at her. She said, “Hurry up, Makenna!” and Makenna said,
“Okay, okay!” She stood up and jogged up the hill, approaching the girl.
She said, “I’m really glad you’re here, Makenna. I’ve been lonely ever since my older sister went to study in America.”
“America?” Makenna asked confused, “Aren’t we in America?”
The girl chuckled and closed her eyes, saying, “No, silly, we’re in the United Kingdom.”
“United Kingdom?” asked Makenna, but then she said, “Oh,” for she saw that the girl had an accent.
The girl nodded and opened her eyes, adding, “We’re going to be sailing to America soon though because we’re going to go visit my sister. Now come on! The ocean is just over this hill!”
“Huh?” Makenna asked, “The ocean?” She peered over the hill and gasped. The girl was right! Just over the hill, directly in front of her, was the ocean! The sun glistened on the water, and under her breath, Makenna said, “Whoa.” She slid down the hill and joined the mysterious girl on the beach.
Together, they walked down it, and the mysterious girl said, “I love walking on the beach. When my sister returns from America, I’m hoping to start a routine soon. I’m hoping that every day, bright and early, we’ll walk on the beach. Although,” She sighed, “rumors speak of a war coming, and I’m afraid my sister won’t be able to leave America until it’s over.”
“You really love your sister, don’t you?” asked Makenna.
“Yeah,” spoke the mysterious girl, “I’ve made plans that on the fourth night of the voyage to America, I will sprint to the bow of the ship and announce up at the star-filled sky, ‘Don’t worry, Annika, your little sister is on her way home! I won’t let anything stand in my way! Not even a rumor of war!’ Sigh, I can picture it now.”
“Wow,” Makenna said, “so Annika’s the name of your sister?”
“Yes, Makenna,” said the mysterious girl, “and she is amazing.” She playfully jogged into the ocean and started to twirl. As she twirled, she said, “I love the ocean.”
Makenna cleared her throat. “And,” she said, “what is your name?”
“My name?” asked the girl. She stopped twirling and focused her attention on Makenna, “My name is…,”
However, just before she could finish, suddenly, random storm clouds covered the sky, and Makenna found herself and the mysterious girl suddenly floating freely in the ocean during a storm!
Waves crashed onto the two girls, and Makenna could hear the mysterious girl yelling, “Makenna, help!” Makenna gasped and peered into the sky. She gasped again. It had suddenly turned into nighttime!
Makenna turned her head and called, “Kid?!” since she didn’t know the girl’s name, and she gasped for the third time when she saw that coming toward her and the mysterious girl, was the silhouette of an enormous ship! The ship’s foghorn blew, and yelling, Makenna shouted, “Swim!” at the mysterious girl, and they together started to swim. Suddenly, the area surrounding her, the mysterious girl, and the approaching ship grew pitch black! The only source of light that was shone came from the ship. Makenna heard the mysterious girl yelling, and she called for her again, “Kid?!” The silhouetted ship started to pass her, and a wave pulled her away from it and underwater. Quickly coming to the surface, Makenna again yelled, “Kid?!” and then she gasped when suddenly, the night was interrupted by a loud scraping sound, and another wave pulled her underwater.
Underwater, Makenna heard the familiar,
“HELP!! MOMMY!! DADDY!!” that she heard when she was seven years old, and the voice sounded like the mysterious girl she met! Oh no, Makenna had to help her! It was not good, whatever had just happened. She tried to swim back in the direction of the ship and mysterious girl, but the current pulled her away, and underwater, Makenna shouted, “NO!” and held out her hand, “COME BACK! COME BACK!!” but the current kept on pulling her.
Then, right after she yelled that, a large silhouette of a man it seemed, who was half man and half octopus appeared in front of her, and in a booming voice, he said, “YES, MAKENNA DELLING,” and his eye sockets glowed up blue, “COME WITH ME.”
He reached out and grabbed Makenna by the arms which she tried to break free and shouted, “LET GO!” She yelled for the ship again, “COME BACK, COME BACK!” but then, she heard it! The familiar sound of iron breaking that she also heard when she was seven years old, and suddenly, a great black figure appeared out of nowhere and started to sink toward her! Screaming, Makenna closed her eyes and shouted, “HELP!” The figure kept on sinking toward her.
Back in reality, out of the dream, it was nighttime on Seabrook Island, and Makenna was thrashing in her sleep, holding out her hand, yelling, “COME BACK! COME BACK, PLEASE!” Her necklace pendant was glowing brightly, and Makenna was outlined by bright, blue magic. Blue lightning suddenly shot out of her open hand, and it crashed into her wall, leaving a hole behind! Dropping her hand, Makenna held it up to her face, and then, all of a sudden, for a split second, she transformed into a fairy! A real fairy! For a split second, she grew small, sky-blue wings, and her outfit changed! After the split second was over though, her wings vanished, and she transformed back into her blue and white, striped top and denim pants. However, she was still outlined by blue magic, and she was still asleep. She was totally unaware that she had just for a split second, transformed into a real fairy!
